{"id":307858,"date":"2024-03-02T11:36:34","date_gmt":"2024-03-02T17:36:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=307858"},"modified":"2024-03-01T00:35:07","modified_gmt":"2024-03-01T06:35:07","slug":"shane-gillis-down-syndrome-snl-spot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/shane-gillis-down-syndrome-snl-spot\/","title":{"rendered":"Comedian Shane Gillis spotlights people with Down syndrome on Saturday Night Live"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Stand-up comedian Shane Gillis shined a spotlight on Down syndrome last week when he made it much of the topic of his stand-up <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/02\/27\/shane-gillis-destroys-pro-abortion-monsters-who-like-to-kill-babies-with-down-syndrome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">monologue<\/a> on Saturday Night Live (SNL).<\/p>\n<p>Gillis, who says he has an uncle and a niece with Down syndrome, cracked some jokes about his family members while noting that though the diagnosis can be scary, people with Down syndrome can lead fulfilling lives like everyone else. It&#8217;s a point he&#8217;s brought up in previous comedy routines as well.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>WARNING: Profanity in video below.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><center><\/center><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ly14Pr2RLys?si=daR4JLF4E6RwSdEb\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During his SNL monologue, Gillis made a similar point as in previous stand-up sketches, but this time, in front of a much larger audience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>You can tell who\u2019s never been around Down syndrome when you bring it up. \u2018I have family members with Down syndrome.\u2019 People who have never been around it are always like, \u2018Oh.\u2019 Like it\u2019s the end of the world. \u2018Are they OK?\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>They\u2019re doing better than everybody I know. They\u2019re the only ones having a good time pretty consistently. They\u2019re not worried about the election.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>&#8230; No, my niece has Down syndrome. It\u2019s a funny thing that happens when someone in your family has Down syndrome. My sister was pregnant. Everyone was very, very scared. [Then] they come into your life, you realize they\u2019re the only good member of your entire family. It\u2019s crazy. Your family gets too proud. My family\u2019s group text, it\u2019s pictures of my niece. Every day, somebody else in the family comments, \u2018She looks exactly like uncle Shane.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While some people didn&#8217;t like the fact that Gillis poked fun at Down syndrome, others contend that he was actually making fun of people who fear the condition. This could be a big portion of the population \u2014 in the United States, an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/new-study-abortion-after-prenatal-diagnosis-of-down-syndrome-reduces-down-syndrome-community-by-thirty-percent\/#_edn9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">67%<\/a> of babies who receive a prenatal diagnosis are aborted.<\/p>\n<p>One person who stepped up in support of Gillis was actor Chris Burke, who has Down syndrome. \u201c[P]eople with Down Syndrome are just like everybody else and shouldn\u2019t be excluded from being joked about by comedians,\u201d Burke said, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2024\/02\/27\/actor-chris-burke-down-syndrome-shane-gillis-saturday-night-live-defense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noting<\/a> that it would be more offensive for comedians to exclude them. Burke said he&#8217;s happy that Gillis is starting a conversation about Down syndrome, especially since he says it&#8217;s something many people are afraid to talk about.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/actnow.io\/ARQQhk1\"><b><i>The DOJ put a pro-life grandmother in jail for protesting the killing of preborn children.
