{"id":307704,"date":"2024-02-25T15:08:57","date_gmt":"2024-02-25T21:08:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=307704"},"modified":"2024-02-24T00:11:24","modified_gmt":"2024-02-24T06:11:24","slug":"study-over-half-abortions-childcare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-over-half-abortions-childcare\/","title":{"rendered":"UK study: Over half of women who had abortions blame cost of childcare as &#8216;primary reason&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/over-half-of-mothers-who-had-an-abortion-say-it-was-due-to-the-cost-of-childcare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Right to Life UK<\/a>) Over half of mothers who have had an abortion in the last 12 months agreed that the cost of childcare was the \u201cprimary reason\u201d for having an abortion, according to a new survey.<\/p>\n<p>The charity Pregnant Then Screwed said that they worked in conjunction with Women In Data, to\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/pregnantthenscrewed.com\/shocking-new-stats-about-the-cost-of-parenting\/#:~:text=Pregnant%20Then%20Screwed%20surveyed%2035%2C800%20parents.%20Women%20In%20Data%C2%AE%20then%20extracted%20a%20nationally%20representative%20sample%20of%205%2C870%20parents%20to%20create%20a%202024%20State%20of%20the%20Nation%20childcare%20report.%20Much%20of%20the%20data%20could%20be%20compared%20directly%20to%20the%20same%20survey%20conducted%20in%202023.%C2%A0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survey<\/a>\u00a035,800 parents from which a representative sample of 5,870 parents was extracted.<\/p>\n<p>According to the findings of this survey,\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/pregnantthenscrewed.com\/shocking-new-stats-about-the-cost-of-parenting\/#:~:text=Half%20(52.5%25)%20of%20mothers%20who%20have%20had%20an%20abortion%20believe%20that%20the%20cost%20of%20childcare%20was%20the%20primary%20reason%20for%20terminating%20their%20pregnancy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">52.5%<\/a> of mothers who have had an abortion somewhat agree or absolutely agree with the statement: \u201cI believe that the cost of childcare was the primary reason for me to terminate a pregnancy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This is a slight decrease from a similar survey that Pregnant Then Screwed undertook in 2022 when they\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/six-in-ten-women-say-the-cost-of-childcare-was-part-of-the-reason-they-had-an-abortion#:~:text=Six%20in%20ten%20women%20who,reason%20for%20having%20an%20abortion.\">found<\/a>\u00a060.5% of women who had an abortion at some point in the prior five years said that the cost of childcare influenced their decision to have an abortion. In particular, 17.4% of women said that childcare costs were the main reason they chose to have an abortion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>These women do not want abortions, they just feel they have no other option<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, as part of their most recent survey, the charity\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/pregnantthenscrewed.com\/shocking-new-stats-about-the-cost-of-parenting\/#:~:text=costs%20or%20availability%E2%80%9D-,%E2%80%9C85%25%20of%20parents%20somewhat%20agree%20or%20strongly%20agree%20with%20the%20statement%20%E2%80%9CI%20tend%20to%20view%20childcare%20costs%20as%20prohibitive%20of%20having%20more%20children%E2%80%9D%C2%A0,-%E2%80%9C34%25%20of\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> that 85% of parents were concerned about the cost of childcare in relation to having more children and agreed with the statement: \u201cI tend to view childcare costs as prohibitive of having more children.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Joeli Brearley, CEO and Founder of Pregnant Then Screwed,\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/pregnantthenscrewed.com\/shocking-new-stats-about-the-cost-of-parenting\/#:~:text=Joeli%20Brearley%2C%20CEO%20and%20Founder%20of%20Pregnant,economy%20can%E2%80%99t%20afford%20to%20pay%20that%20price.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cWe\u2019re running out of babies. The birth rate is in decline. But parents who want to have more children cannot afford to do so. Being a parent is tough enough, but when having more children means sacrificing your income, procreation feels like financial suicide. What the women who have an abortion for this reason need is support.
