When Sherrye began to go into early labor at 21 weeks into her pregnancy, she and her husband Jamar were afraid, knowing their daughter had a very small chance of survival.<\/p>\n

Providentially, they live near MemorialCare Miller Children\u2019s & Women\u2019s Hospital in Long Beach, California, which has an exceptional Level IV NICU, the highest designation possible. They have a special Small Baby Unit and an even more specialize extremely low birthweight program<\/a>. Reportedly, \u201cThe environment within the Small Baby Center mimics a mother\u2019s womb, providing a warm and dark environment for a baby to grow in more developmentally appropriate surroundings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Peggy Chen took Sherrye and Jamar’s case and was confident that she could deliver, intubate, and resuscitate the micro-preemie \u201cDr. Chen had the mind, skill and courage to deliver and intubate,\u201d said Jamar. \u201cWe are so thankful for Dr. Chen who believed in Marz and got us to where we are today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her parents, Sherrye and Jamar, didn\u2019t know what to expect for their daughter\u2019s health journey ahead, but they never gave up hope. Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) team rallied around her and the family providing care, guidance and support. After four months in the NICU, Marz was finally able to go home, needing a small supplemental oxygen supply. She is the youngest baby to ever graduate from our NICU. \u00a0 \u201cThe whole team made us feel like we had a real community looking after us,\u201d said Marz\u2019s parents. \u201cParents should have hope and try for their child against all odds. Commit to being there, even if your child can\u2019t see you. They can feel you, smell you, and hear you. The staff told us that us being there has attributed to her success.\u201d \u00a0 We have one of the largest level IV NICU\u2019s in the area, which is the highest designation available by the American Academy of Pediatrics. It includes a Small Baby Program that specializes in caring for babies weighing less than 2 lbs at birth, like Marz.
