The outlet called \u201cBaby Olivia,\u201d which uses groundbreaking animation to depict life in the womb from the moment of fertilization, &#8220;a new front in state-level abortion politics.&#8221; In other words, the AP attempts to paint \u201cBaby Olivia\u201d as nothing more than a pro-life political move. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In reality, \u201cBaby Olivia\u201d is educational material that is now being politicized by those who favor abortion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S-lQOooYAs8?si=DcgAvbaBHPSksobY\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>Targeting Live Action<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The AP targets Live Action in the article, originally claiming that some of the organization&#8217;s pro-life efforts specifically concerning Planned Parenthood &#8220;led a federal jury to award Planned Parenthood $2 million in damages in 2019.&#8221; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this is a <strong>major<\/strong> factual inaccuracy, as AP&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/general-news-d4f17c7ba5a147d5976d5e3bd140b8c4\">own previous reporting<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/general-news-b62838634162489ab3a8bcf6840bd900\">proves<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The AP \u2013 a frequent \u201cfact checker\u201d \u2013 was forced to issue a correction as to its original claim. In 2019, when Planned Parenthood was awarded just over $2 million in damages, it was following the release of fetal body part trafficking videos produced by <em>the <\/em><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for Medical Progress<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not Live Action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Educational curriculum<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State legislatures in Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, and West Virginia are debating bills that would require public school students to watch \u201cBaby Olivia\u201d or a similar video during sex ed\/health classes. North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/baby-olivia-north-dakota-students-window-womb\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a law into effect last year requiring \u201cBaby Olivia\u201d or equivalent video content to be shown in its public schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under HB 1265, both health curriculum and human sexuality instruction in North Dakota schools must show a high-definition video depicting the formation of vital organs in early fetal development. Viewing human growth and development in two separate classes before high school graduation is now the state standard in schools across North Dakota.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/baby-olivia-medically-accurate-fetal-development-media\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previously noted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Live Action News, the vast majority of information featured in the video was gleaned from the detailed \u201caward-winning content\u201d from the Endowment for Human Development (EHD). EHD is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a self-described \u201cnonprofit organization dedicated to improving health science education and public health\u201d which is \u201c\u200b\u200bcommitted to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ehd.org\/overview_neutrality.php\">neutrality<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> regarding all controversial bioethical issues.&#8221; Its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ehd.org\/about-us.php\">website<\/a> states that its \u201cboard of directors, board of advisors, staff, and volunteers includes accomplished educators, researchers, authors, programmers, and clinicians from a variety of scientific and business disciplines who share the common goal of improving lifelong health through prenatal development-based education.\u201d As reported, \u201cU.S. science educators have endorsed the organization\u2019s award-winning content, which National Geographic also distributes.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>To educate or to manipulate?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cBaby Olivia\u201d video is medically accurate and was reviewed and endorsed by OB-GYNs and other medical professionals, including Dr. David Bolender, PhD, Cell Biology, Neurobiology &amp; Anatomy, Medical College of Wisconsin; Dr. Donna Harrison of the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists; Michelle Cretella, MD, Executive Director of the American College of Pediatricians; and Jeffrey Barrows, DO, MA, Senior VP Bioethics and Public Policy for the Christian Medical &amp; Dental Associations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For its article, however, the AP turned to the pro-abortion American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), which claimed the video was &#8220;designed to manipulate the emotions of viewers.&#8221; It should be <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/exposing-acog-medical-organization-supports-abortion-industry\/\">noted<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/exposing-acog-medical-organization-supports-abortion-industry\/\">ACOG<\/a> is stridently <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/american-college-obstetricians-gynecologists-pro-abortion\/\">pro-abortion<\/a> and is <a href=\"https:\/\/ibisreproductivehealth.org\/sites\/default\/files\/files\/publications\/Ibis%202016%20990.pdf\">funded<\/a> by radical abortion organizations, including Ibis Reproductive Health \u2014\u00a0which is <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200130190128\/https:\/\/ibisreproductivehealth.org\/funders\">funded<\/a> by U.S. abortion pill manufacturer Danco Laboratories \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ibisreproductivehealth.org\/funders\">and by<\/a> the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, a Danco investor. ACOG recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantmakers.io\/profiles\/v0\/476032365-susan-thompson-buffett-foundation\/?query=American%20College%20of%20Obstetrics\">received<\/a> $1.4 million from the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, which funds many pro-abortion efforts worldwide, and has received hundreds of thousands of dollars from that foundation every year for <a href=\"http:\/\/990s.foundationcenter.org\/990pf_pdf_archive\/476\/476032365\/476032365_201612_990PF.pdf\">several<\/a> years. Buffett was also one of the first <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-funded-abortion-pill-investor-buffett-foundation\/\">investors<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/secrecy-abortion-pill-maker-investors\/\">Danco<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live Action noted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/baby-olivia-represents-all-children-in-the-womb\/\">press release<\/a>, &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ACOG is out of line with what the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/doctor-most-obgyns-dont-do-abortions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">large majority<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of OBGYNs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/news-release\/2017\/most-us-obstetrician-gynecologists-private-practice-do-not-provide-abortions-and#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actually believe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It does not represent all OBGYNs on abortion and gestational development issues&#8230; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ACOG\u2019s abortion advocacy began shortly after its founding in 1951 by leaders <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/exposing-acog-medical-organization-supports-abortion-industry\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">involved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Planned Parenthood, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/population-council-founded-eugenicists-promoting-abortion-turns-65\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Population Council<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (which brought the abortion pill to the United States), and the American Eugenics Society. In 1968, ACOG\u2019s leaders <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/exposing-acog-medical-organization-supports-abortion-industry\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endorsed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the decriminalization of abortion.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ACOG is anything but impartial about abortion.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lila Rose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/baby-olivia-represents-all-children-in-the-womb\/\">added<\/a>, &#8220;&#8230; the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), has become a highly politicized organization that, despite the disagreement of thousands of its members, advocates for abortion on demand.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rose called it &#8220;telling&#8221; that &#8220;the only medical expert the AP could find who would go on record for the piece criticizing &#8216;Baby Olivia&#8217; is the co-founder of a pro-abortion activist group in Iowa. This fact itself was disguised by the AP when they referred to her affiliation as the leader of a &#8216;reproductive rights&#8217; group instead of disclosing the group\u2019s main objective, which is opposing all abortion restrictions.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Medically accurate depictions of human development<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite what ACOG claims about &#8220;Baby Olivia,&#8221; a<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> viewer\u2019s &#8220;emotional&#8221; reaction to seeing life in the womb is, essentially, irrelevant to the fact that the science of human development in the womb is a biological reality. As Rose noted, \u201cEvery student in our nation should have access to the facts about human development. It is tragic that basic facts about human biology are so controversial for abortion supporters in 2024.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certified OB-GYN Kathi Aultman, MD, FACOG, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/baby-olivia-live-action-groundbreaking-fetal-development\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attested<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the accuracy of Live Action&#8217;s video:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olivia is a spectacular and medically accurate portrayal of the development of a baby girl within the womb. It is based on information from the Endowment for Human Development, a highly respected scientific source on embryology and fetal development. Olivia draws back the curtain on the womb giving us a realistic glimpse of the baby within. As a retired OB-GYN, I wish this had been available for my patients.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So did Dr. Jeffrey Barrows, DO, MA, of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cmda.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christian Medical &amp; Dental Associations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0This video is an accurate and vivid portrayal of the intrauterine development of the baby. If I were still practicing obstetrics, I would be showing this to all of my pregnant patients.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because \u201cBaby Olivia\u201d is, indeed, medically accurate, the AP struggled to find a strong argument against its representation of fetal development, and focused instead on the video&#8217;s use of &#8216;weeks after fertilization&#8217; as milestone markers for life in the womb. As noted in Live Action&#8217;s press release (emphasis added):<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Associated Press[\u2026] references a letter written by \u201cIowa physicians and educators\u201d as a source for two additional criticisms of Baby Olivia \u2013 namely, that the video\u2019s method of gauging the age of the preborn child is flawed, and that its portrayal of Olivia\u2019s heartbeat is inaccurate. Notably, however, no citation to the alleged letter is provided, making it impossible to confirm that it truly says what the AP claims&#8230;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding the criticism of Baby Olivia\u2019s method of calculating preborn age, the AP states: \u201cIowa physicians and educators said in a letter to state lawmakers that by using weeks after fertilization, the video misleads viewers because the framing indicates milestones happen about two weeks earlier than is accurate.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, this criticism is itself inaccurate. Dating a child from the moment of fertilization, also known as \u201cconceptual age,\u201d reflects the chronological age of the child. As doctors Max Mongelli, Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Sydney, and Jason O. Gardosi, Professor of Maternal and Perinatal Health at the University of Warwick, write in their 2021 medical journal article titled <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/emedicine.medscape.com\/article\/259269-overview#a4\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evaluation of Gestation<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><i>\u201cGestational age (GA) refers to the length of pregnancy after the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP) and is usually expressed in weeks and days. This is also known as menstrual age. Conceptional age (CA) is the true fetal age and refers to the length of pregnancy from the time of conception.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dating a pregnancy by using conceptual age, as Baby Olivia does, is the most scientifically and medically accurate method.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The AP also claimed that &#8220;references to fetal &#8216;heartbeat&#8217; are widely disputed. At six weeks, the embryo isn&#8217;t yet a fetus and doesn&#8217;t have a heart.&#8221; However, this is scientifically inaccurate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The human heart is the first organ to develop, according to multiple doctors \u2014 including Dr. Mobeen Syed and pediatric cardiologist Dr. Regina Lantin-Hermoso. Syed<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uwXJunOAg9k\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explained<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, &#8220;[The] heart is the very first organ that starts developing and it is the first organ that reaches a functional state. Can you imagine that <\/span><b>the heart reaches a functional state even before its own development completes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? When the heart is in the form of a tube, <\/span><b>even then it is pulsating and it is beating and it is pumping blood<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221; (emphasis added)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lantin-Hermoso<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9JH1lQW4iIo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">noted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that &#8220;in order for the embryo to develop into a fetus, circulation must replace diffusion. And for this reason &#8212; if there is no circulation, then the rest of the organ systems are not going to develop and therefore the cardiovascular system is the very first organ system to reach maturity. Cardiac development begins very early &#8230; at about 15 to 18 days post-conception.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, Peter J. Ward, Professor of Anatomy,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=p2Q5kI8uXIs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explained<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, &#8220;The heart, to do its job, <\/span><b>has to be able to pump, and it starts pumping fairly early on \u2014 about day 23 of development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &#8230; At this point, we&#8217;ve got a nice flow of blood already set up through the heart.&#8221; (emphasis added)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The AP goes on to state: \u201cThe video also describes the animated figure\u2019s motion and actions with words like \u2018playing,\u2019 \u2018exploring,\u2019 \u2018sighing,\u2019 and making \u2018speaking movements.\u2019 Those words assign human traits and properties to a fetus that are more sophisticated than medicine can prove[.]\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live Action president and founder <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lila Rose responded, &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a fact that children in the womb are human beings; they will possess traits that are characteristic of their species. Live Action and the medical experts we collaborated with stand by the scientific accuracy of every aspect in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baby Olivia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The necessity of education on human development<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It simply makes sense to educate human beings on how each human life begins. Objections to teaching children about basic biological facts should be viewed with skepticism \u2013 especially when those same objectors favor promoting radical pro-abortion ideology and arguably age-inappropriate sex education in schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ryan N. Benn, Esq., Director of Policy at the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefamilyleader.com\/post\/baby-olivia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Iowa Family Leader<\/span><\/a><b>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">noted that schools &#8220;&#8230; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">already require teaching human development. And if we are going to teach human development, the curriculum should begin at the beginning\u2014when the human first starts to develop\u2026.&#8221; He adds, &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This bill simply informs students of the facts \u2014 that human development doesn\u2019t start once a baby has been delivered \u2014 it starts 9 months before that. If people haven\u2019t seen the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baby Olivia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> video, they should watch it! It\u2019s very well done, it\u2019s informative, and it demonstrates the humanity of babies in the womb.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addia Wuchner, registered nurse and Executive Director at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kyrighttolife.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kentucky Right to Life<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, said:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a world where science and technology continually push the boundaries of human understanding, it\u2019s essential to celebrate the magnificence of biological processes, especially those surrounding human development. \u201cBaby Olivia,\u201d an animated portrayal of fetal development, stands as a beacon of biological education for all age groups, providing an understanding of gestational age and embryological milestones\u2026.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, John Mize, Chief Executive Officer at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aul.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Americans United for Life<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stated:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students deserve the facts about human development as reviewed by doctors and medical experts who are not on the payroll of Planned Parenthood. Americans United for Life applauds those state lawmakers working to ensure students in their states have access to best-in-class educational materials on the amazing facts of human development in the womb. The facts of human development are what they are, and we owe young people those facts captured so well by Live Action\u2019s <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baby Olivia<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lila Rose noted in response to the AP&#8217;s article, \u201cIt is disappointing that the Associated Press seems determined to challenge the fact that human beings in the womb are human beings.
