A second attempt to enshrine the “right” to abortion in the New Hampshire constitution failed last week, as lawmakers voted down the proposal in the Senate with a vote of 14-9 along party lines. The vote followed a similar defeat in the state House, which happened earlier this month.<\/p>\n

According to the Associated Press<\/a>, New Hampshire does not allow citizens to lead a petition for ballot initiatives. Instead, constitutional changes can only be made if three-fifths of the Legislature agrees to put the question on a ballot measure. Voters must then approve amendments by a two-thirds majority.<\/p>\n

Current state law allows abortion through 24 weeks, though preborn babies can be killed even later if the mother’s life is in danger or if the child has been given a life-limiting diagnosis. In speaking against the proposed amendment, Senator Regina Birdsell warned that it would remove all<\/em> current preborn protections and allow abortion for any reason through all nine months.<\/p>\n

“It sweeps away everything that we have voted,” Birdsell said<\/a>. “It would allow abortion up until the moment of birth, with absolutely no restrictions. ”<\/p>\n

Senator Becky Whitley argued that the constitutional amendment is necessary for women to advance in their career goals. \u201cI rise for the little girls ahead of me who now have less rights than I have, rights that led me directly to this chamber, and helped me build a career a family and life of my choice and of my dreams,\u201d she said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Though this is a common claim, there is never<\/em> a right to kill another innocent human being. Abortion is the violent homicide of a preborn child, as that child is deprived of nutrients, pulled apart limb by limb, or poisoned in its mother’s womb. Advocating for the death of that child so that one may advance in a career is a warped, limited ideology that says that women are incapable of raising children and following their dreams. Instead of being told they must kill their children in order to reach their goals, mothers should be empowered and encouraged to pursue their dreams.<\/p>\n
