{"id":307266,"date":"2024-02-21T16:38:02","date_gmt":"2024-02-21T22:38:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=307266"},"modified":"2024-02-21T09:35:07","modified_gmt":"2024-02-21T15:35:07","slug":"double-standard-play-studies-abortion-pill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/double-standard-play-studies-abortion-pill\/","title":{"rendered":"Is a dangerous double standard at play with studies on the abortion pill?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Recently, the pro-abortion media failed to come to the defense of pro-life authors after SagePub <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/publisher-suddenly-retracts-studies-abortion-pill-lawsuits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retracted<\/a> three of their studies for allegedly failing to disclose &#8220;conflicts of interest.&#8221; And yet, a recently released abortion study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41591-024-02834-w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> in the journal &#8220;Nature Medicine&#8221; (which <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/mainstream-media-mislead-telemed-abortion-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">purportedly<\/a> showed that telehealth abortions posed few health risks) was authored and funded by organizations which heavily support abortion \u2014 and failed to fully disclose these conflicts of interest.<\/p>\n<p>Is there a double standard at play?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Double Standard in Abortion Studies?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41591-024-02834-w#ethics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> &#8220;Effectiveness and safety of telehealth medication abortion in the USA,&#8221; was authored by abortion activists associated with the pro-abortion group Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH), the University of California, and other pro-abortion groups. It used data from the <strong>California Home Abortion by Telehealth (CHAT)<\/strong> <strong>study<\/strong>. More on that later.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Effectiveness&#8221; study only disclosed a conflict with one author. Yet, just days ago, SagePub made the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/publisher-suddenly-retracts-studies-abortion-pill-lawsuits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decision<\/a> to retract three studies from authors which had \u201caffiliations with pro-life advocacy organizations\u201d including the Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI). The journal claimed (among other things) that these authors allegedly failed to disclose &#8220;conflicts of interest.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sage&#8217;s retraction was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LozierInstitute\/status\/1755257426197025010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criticized<\/a> by CLI as an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/assaultonscience.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">assault on science<\/a>\u201d and the organization denied that they failed to properly disclose conflicts. The retraction was viewed by many as questionable, because two of the years-old studies are <a href=\"https:\/\/adfmedialegalfiles.blob.core.windows.net\/files\/AllianceForHippocraticMedicineComplaint.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cited<\/a>\u00a0by plaintiffs in the\u00a0<em>Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine<\/em>\u00a0[AHM]<em>\u00a0v. Food and Drug Administration<\/em> (FDA) lawsuit, which calls into question the 2000 approval of the abortion pill (mifepristone) by the FDA. In addition, both studies were later cited in the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/district-court-judge-revoke-fda-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decision<\/a> by District Court Judge Matthew J. Kacsmaryk to suspend FDA approval of the drug.<\/p>\n<p>That case is set to be heard before the Supreme Court in March.<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, even though ANSIRH&#8217;s telehealth abortion study is being touted as a response to AHM&#8217;s lawsuit, its &#8220;conflicts of interest&#8221; have not been scrutinized, until now&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The new study comes just weeks before the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a case that could jeopardize mifepristone\u2019s FDA approval.<\/p>\n<p>It&#39;s time SCOTUS face what we know from research: Abortion care is safe &amp; effective when provided through telehealth. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/b9AJBlkOFA\">https:\/\/t.co\/b9AJBlkOFA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; ANSIRH (@ANSIRH) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ANSIRH\/status\/1759306036874510408?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 18, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><strong>Do the Authors Have Conflicts of Interest?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The telehealth abortion study authors include Ushma D. Upadhyay, Leah R. Koenig, Karen Meckstroth, Jennifer Ko, Ena Suseth Valladares, and M. Antonia Biggs. According to the disclosures, other than <a role=\"button\" data-test=\"author-name\" data-track=\"click\" data-track-action=\"open author\" data-track-label=\"link\" data-author-popup=\"auth-Karen-Meckstroth-Aff1\" data-author-search=\"Meckstroth, Karen\">Karen Meckstroth, <\/a>the authors declared &#8220;no competing interests.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But is this true?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;K.M. reports receiving personal fees from Danco Laboratories, a distributor of mifepristone, for stafing a US Food and Drug,&#8221; the authors wrote.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_307365\" style=\"width: 765px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-307365\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-307365\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Telehealth-abortion-study-claimed-just-one-conflict-of-interest.jpg\" alt=\"Telehealth abortion study claimed just one conflict of interest\" width=\"755\" height=\"647\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Telehealth-abortion-study-claimed-just-one-conflict-of-interest.jpg 755w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Telehealth-abortion-study-claimed-just-one-conflict-of-interest-300x257.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Telehealth-abortion-study-claimed-just-one-conflict-of-interest-700x600.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Telehealth-abortion-study-claimed-just-one-conflict-of-interest-500x428.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 755px) 100vw, 755px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-307365\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Telehealth abortion study claimed just one conflict of interest<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But was the same standard used by Sage to retract the study by pro-life authors applied to this study?<\/p>\n<p>Sage <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/publisher-suddenly-retracts-studies-abortion-pill-lawsuits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a> that \u201call but one of the article\u2019s authors had an affiliation with one or more of Charlotte Lozier Institute, Elliot Institute, and American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists, all pro-life advocacy organizations&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yet,<em><strong> all of the authors listed in the telehealth abortion study are connected to heavily pro-abortion groups<\/strong><\/em> as we detail below:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Author <strong>Karen Meckstroth<\/strong> is the only one to disclose conflicts of interest. Meckstroth has received \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2783451\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">personal fees<\/a>\u201d from Danco and has been listed as a\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.japha.org\/article\/S1544-3191(21)00285-5\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">consultant<\/a>\u201d of Danco. She is on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-author-mail-order-abortion-pill-paid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">staff<\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/karen-meckstroth-a28596aa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UCSF<\/a>\u00a0and is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsfhealth.org\/providers\/dr-karen-r-meckstroth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">director<\/a>\u00a0of Women\u2019s Options Center, an abortion facility which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsfhealth.org\/clinics\/womens-options-center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commits<\/a> abortions up to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsfhealth.org\/treatments\/surgical-abortion-second-trimester\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">23rd week<\/a>\u00a0of pregnancy. It was also one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clinicaltrials.gov\/ProvidedDocs\/57\/NCT03320057\/Prot_004.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sites<\/a> for a pharmacy-dispensed abortion pill clinical trial.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Author <strong>Ushma Upadhyay <\/strong>is an <a href=\"https:\/\/bixbycenter.ucsf.edu\/ushma-upadhyay-phd-mph\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">associate professor<\/a> at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ushma-upadhyay-phd-mph-294333\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UCSF\u2019s<\/a> Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH). ANSIRH is part of UCSF\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/studies-funded-abortion-supporters-attempt-disprove-women-regret-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health<\/a> (more on ANSIRH below). In <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/no-test-contact-abortion-covid-works-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019<\/a>, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, Upadhyay advocated a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/bad-actors-abortion-pill-fda-ectopic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">no test\/no touch<\/a>\u201d protocol for the abortion pill, which eliminated important preliminary labs, testing, and ultrasounds \u2014\u00a0potentially placing <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-abortion-pill-complications-underreported-er-managing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">women in harm\u2019s way<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Upadhyay has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/story\/2023-01-06\/abortion-pills-pharmacies-fda-cvs-walgreens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argued<\/a> that the FDA should \u201cremove as many barriers as possible\u201d on the abortion pill and she is far from unbiased on the issue, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UshmaU\/status\/1472251061406605315\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">writing<\/a> on Twitter\/X in 2021: &#8220;It\u2019s worth trying every tool we\u2019ve got to enable all states to benefit from FDA\u2019s recent decision allowing mail-order pharmacies to dispense abortion pills&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Upadhyay is also <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UshmaU\/status\/1633639455134482432?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">working on<\/a>\u00a0a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.periodpillstudy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a>\u00a0for \u201clate period pills\u201d which, according to her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.periodpillstudy.org\/lpp-faqs#q1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">protocol,<\/a>\u00a0\u201cinvolves taking 3 doses of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.periodpillstudy.org\/lpp-faqs#q4\">misoprostol<\/a>\u201d and attempts to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.periodpillstudy.org\/lpp-faqs#q1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conflate<\/a>\u00a0a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/missed-period-pills-women-know-pregnant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">late period<\/a>\u00a0with chemical abortion:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_288481\" style=\"width: 619px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-288481\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-288481\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Late-Period-Pill-is-an-abortion.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Late Period Pill is an abortion\" width=\"609\" height=\"351\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-288481\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Late-Period-Pill-is-an-abortion.jpg 790w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Late-Period-Pill-is-an-abortion-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Late-Period-Pill-is-an-abortion-768x442.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Late-Period-Pill-is-an-abortion-700x403.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Late-Period-Pill-is-an-abortion-500x288.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 609px) 100vw, 609px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-288481\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Late Period Pill is an abortion<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Author Leah R. Koenig<\/strong>\u00a0is a data analyst with ANSIRH, who previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/leah-ren-ai-koenig-95383956\/\">worked<\/a> at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The Gates Foundation is a significant funder of <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/funded-bill-gates-abortion-pill-worldwide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DKT International<\/a>, which markets abortion pills worldwide. Koenig&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/leah-ren-ai-koenig-95383956\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn page<\/a>\u00a0reveals she has also worked for the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute as well as the Population Council.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Koenig also <a href=\"https:\/\/societyfp.org\/awarded_grants\/improving-ascertainment-of-adverse-events-after-telehealth-medication-abortion-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">received<\/a> financial support for CHAT from the Society of Family Planning (SFP). Live Action News <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/follow-money-pro-abortion-group-suicide-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a> documented that SFP was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.contraceptionjournal.org\/article\/S0010-7824(15)30069-X\/pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">founded<\/a>\u00a0in 2005 with a generous contribution from the Packard Foundation and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/990s.foundationcenter.org\/990pf_pdf_archive\/476\/476032365\/476032365_201612_990PF.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">receives<\/a>\u00a0millions from the Buffett Foundation.\u00a0Over past years,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/billionaires-behind-abortion-wealthy-population-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion philanthropist<\/a> and abortion pill investor Warren Buffett (the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation) has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantmakers.io\/profiles\/v0\/476032365-susan-thompson-buffett-foundation\/?query=society&amp;grantee_name=SOCIETY%20OF%20FAMILY%20PLANNING\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poured<\/a>\u00a0over $15.3 million into SFP.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">&#8220;Telehealth can bring an otherwise impossible abortion within reach&#8230;,&#8221;Koenig wrote in an op-ed she <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/telehealth-makes-timely-abortions-possible-for-many-research-shows-219076\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">penned<\/a> with Upadhyay.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Author Ena Suseth Valladares<\/strong> is a program director with &#8220;California Latinas for Reproductive Justice, Los Angeles, CA, USA&#8221; which <a href=\"https:\/\/californialatinas.org\/about-us\/abortion-is-healthcare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advocates online<\/a> that the &#8220;right to choose and access to the abortion healthcare services&#8221; is &#8220;fundamental to our struggle for Reproductive Justice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Author M. Antonia Biggs<\/strong>\u00a0is a <a href=\"https:\/\/bixbycenter.ucsf.edu\/m-antonia-biggs-phd\">researcher<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/can-we-trust-new-study-claiming-women-certain-about-abortions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ANSIRH<\/a>, while <strong>author Jennifer Ko<\/strong> is with the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at the previously mentioned University of California, San Francisco.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is huge.!!! The organization was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ansirh.org\/about\/ansirh-founder-felicia-hance-stewart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">founded<\/a> by abortionist Felicia H. Stewart (previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popcouncil.org\/uploads\/pdfs\/Nordberg.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">awarded<\/a> by the Population Council), who served on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cossa.org\/CPR\/arhpNIHletter112003.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">executive committee<\/a> of the ARHP and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prochoiceamerica.org\/assets\/files\/chicago_poc_2006_invite.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">boards<\/a>\u00a0of NARAL and\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/5aa1b2xfmfh2e2mk03kk8rsx-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/annual_report_2006.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Abortion Federation<\/a>. She was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/Dr-Felicia-Hance-Stewart-2537126.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medical director<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/reprohealth.ucsf.edu\/fs\/bios\/stewart-felicia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">staff physician<\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/Dr-Felicia-Hance-Stewart-2537126.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Planned Parenthood facilities<\/a>\u00a0in California.<\/p>\n<p>ANSIRH is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ansirh.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">part<\/a> of UCSF\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/studies-funded-abortion-supporters-attempt-disprove-women-regret-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health.<\/a>\u00a0The Bixby Center\u00a0prides itself on abortion as a focus and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bixbycenter.ucsf.edu\/abortion\">claims<\/a> that their work has \u201cled to new methods of abortion and expanded the abortion care workforce.\u201d Bixby\u00a0trains abortion providers though its\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ryanprogram.org\/\">Ryan Residency Training Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In 2002, the Bixby Center launched the [<a href=\"http:\/\/ansirh.org\/\">ANSIRH<\/a>] Program\u2026 to enhance access to abortion. It is the responsibility of journals, editors and reviewers <strong>to ensure these agendas are not promoted<\/strong> through biased scientific approaches,&#8221; Sargent wrote on Twitter &#8220;X&#8221; in 2019 (emphasis added).
