There are good reasons why."},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the UK&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-12570903\/Death-Pill-Number-women-relying-natural-family-planning-apps-avoid-pregnancy-doubles-decade-amid-celeb-social-media-inspired-trend-ditch-hormonal-contraception.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NHS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, more of the younger generations are turning to natural family planning (NFP) or fertility awareness methods (FAM) instead of hormonal contraception. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NHS surveyed about 555,400 women between the ages of 13 to 54 over the past 10 years and found that, compared to when the survey first began in 2013, the amount of women choosing natural methods in 2023 has <em>doubled<\/em> \u2014 from 4,500 to 8,800. Incredible. But why? Natural methods (which require abstinence to avoid pregnancy during the fertile time of a woman&#8217;s cycle) don\u2019t exactly line up with the message of mainstream feminism: sex on demand without repercussions. The shift may be a realization of the damage mainstream feminism and hormonal contraception have had on female health overall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/2024\/01\/why-are-women-ditching-the-pill\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">op-ed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Ella Whelan, a freelance journalist for Unherd, points out that <em>millennials<\/em> largely favor hormonal contraception such as the pill, IUDs, and others. \u201cWe millennials would risk pretty much anything to have carefree sex \u2014 even our waistlines,\u201d she says. She briefly outlines her own experience with these contraceptive methods calling the copper IUD a \u201cmedieval experience\u201d and recalls \u201csoldiering\u201d through taking various birth control pills and later resorting to the morning-after pills. Yet, when Whelan was later told her remaining fertility would not be enough to conceive a child without medical intervention, she expresses no regret for her choices. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the same NHS research, only about 30% of women using oral contraception back in 2013 are still using it today. That means a little over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-12570903\/Death-Pill-Number-women-relying-natural-family-planning-apps-avoid-pregnancy-doubles-decade-amid-celeb-social-media-inspired-trend-ditch-hormonal-contraception.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">294,000 women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> chose to stop taking the pill.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he too-common reality of the troubled path of hormonal contraception seems to have reached the ears of the next generation: <em>Gen Z<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Misunderstanding the nature of fertility awareness<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many still hold on to the outdated image of the \u201crhythm method\u201d as the predominant natural contraception, but science has shown women how to track their own signs and symptoms \u2014 biomarkers, if you will \u2014 to identify when they are becoming fertile and when they\u2019re not. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural Womanhood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0has a host of helpful and clearly organized resources for learning about the various <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/topic\/natural-family-planning\/natural-birth-control\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NFP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/topic\/fertility-awareness-methods\/what-is-fam\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FAM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0strategies, hormonal contraception side effects, and an advice line for any and all cycle concerns. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbesbusinesscouncil\/2023\/06\/29\/breaking-down-barriers-how-femtech-is-improving-womens-health-and-well-being\/?sh=4bf3b58f26bb\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FemTech<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0has caught on to tracking these <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/topic\/fertility-awareness-methods\/understanding-your-menstrual-cycle\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biomarkers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and has made many advancements to allow NFP and FAM methods to be technologically available to women who are busy building a career, mothers with little more than 10 minutes to themselves, and women entering perimenopause and beyond. As Whelan puts it, many women feel that \u201cmethods of contraception feed into the idea of a woman\u2019s sense of self.\u201d Teaching women about their bodies and the incredible design of their fertility <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> empowering. In the age of data and self-empowerment, NFP and FAM fit right in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whelan quotes Dr. Rebecca Steinfield, a reproductive health commentator, stating,\u201cI\u2019m not convinced dressing up age-old methods, like the rhythm method, in snazzy new apps is the reproductive utopia fem-tech companies want us to believe it is\u2026They all romanticize a past when people lacked access to revolutionary, literally life-saving innovations like modern contraception, effective pain relief in labour, safe surgery in birth, and life-sustaining formula milk.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But is this <em>really<\/em> the reality of NFP and FAM? <\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Scientifically backed and effective<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steinfeld fails to mention the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/topic\/natural-family-planning\/effectiveness-rates\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scientifically backed and effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0natural methods of family planning such as Sympto-Thermal (SymptoPro or Couple to Couple League), the Creighton Model, the Billings Method, FEMM, Marquette, and ChartNeo. These methods each include various ways of tracking one or more of the following fertility biomarkers: cervical mucus, cervix position, basal body temperature (BBT), and hormones detected by at-home urine tests. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it is not clear which methods Gen Z is choosing over the pill, it is obvious that FemTech has latched onto methods like Sympto-Thermal, FEMM, and Marquette. Apps such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/readyourbody.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read Your Body<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/femmhealth.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FEMM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/flo.health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/helloclue.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and others allow women to track their biomarkers in digital format for quick reference and ease. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalcycles.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural Cycles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a newer, FDA-approved, and somewhat controversial app, has also gained popularity in recent years. Yet, it has garnered much criticism for its lack of tracking more than one fertility sign and relying mostly on a computer algorithm for fertility prediction. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For methods requiring BBT monitoring, newer FemTech devices such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempdrop.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TempDrop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ava<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/usa.daysy.me\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daysy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0have been made with the intent to create an easier way to track this biomarker. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clearblue.com\/ovulation-tests\/fertility-monitor-with-touch-screen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clear Blue Fertility Monitor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (17) is specifically for use with the Marquette Model to make reading urine tests a breeze when pairing with an algorithm based on a woman\u2019s body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With all of these innovative FemTech additions to the NFP family, it\u2019s no wonder Gen Z has stopped to listen. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite this, critics like Whelan claim that NFP and FAM are \u201cfailing women.\u201d Yet according to Natural Womanhood, the failure rates of the top NFP methods <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/topic\/natural-family-planning\/effectiveness-rates\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rival<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the failure rates of the pill, IUD, and condoms. These rates include typical use \u2014 meaning human error is included in the calculation. The Sympto-Thermal method stands at a 1.8% failure rate with typical use, the Creighton Model lands at 4%, and Marquette sits at 7%. Comparing these to some of the more popular forms of hormonal and non-hormonal contraception, the IUD sits at a 1% failure rate, the pill at 9%, and condoms at 18%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QQyFcliSbBc?si=E7nBiYdHUA7CXGvF\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4>Drawbacks of hormonal birth control<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many are beginning to recognize that fertility awareness can be empowering and effective, and without the nasty side effects that can result from hormonal contraceptive use. <\/span>These <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/topic\/birth-control-side-effects\/\">side effects can include<\/a> an increased risk of autoimmune disease, blood clots, stroke, depression, cancer, copper toxicity, libido changes, weight gain, and HIV transmission \u2014 as Live Action News has previously <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/index-stories-young-women-impacted-birth-control\/\">discussed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Studies done recently show that women taking hormonal birth control (HBC) are <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/topic\/birth-control-side-effects\/autoimmune\/\">significantly more likely to develop an autoimmune disease<\/a>, including being \u201c[35%] more likely to develop multiple sclerosis, [50%] more likely to develop lupus, and up to three times more likely to develop Crohn\u2019s disease, when compared with women who never took birth control.\u201d A <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wide-ranging-uk-study-contraception-depression\/\">study<\/a>\u00a0done in 2023 with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/epidemiology-and-psychiatric-sciences\/article\/populationbased-cohort-study-of-oral-contraceptive-use-and-risk-of-depression\/B3C611DD318D7DC536B4BD439343A5BD\">data<\/a> from the UK Biobank showed adult women had a 79% increased risk of depression and adolescents a 95% increased risk of developing depression with use of oral contraceptives. For adolescents, the depression continued for longer than two years even after discontinuing usage of the pill. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4386952\/#:~:text=WHAT%20THIS%20STUDY%20ADDS,term%20users%20of%20hormonal%20contraceptives.\">Brain<\/a>, breast, and <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26808155\/\">cervical<\/a>\u00a0cancer links to hormonal contraception have now all been documented, with breast cancer risk <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/oxford-study-hormonal-contraception-breast-cancer\/\">increasing<\/a> by 20-30% among HBC users. HBC use comes with a risk of stroke, heart attacks, and blood clots in various parts of the body including the lungs, pelvis, and legs. Blood clots such as these kill about 300-400 women per year in the U.S. alone, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepublicdiscourse.com\/2019\/03\/49896\/\">Public Discourse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The statistics go on and on \u2014 a poor and tragic track record, to say the least.<\/p>\n<h4>&#8216;Grave consequences&#8217; to freedom?<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whelan ends her op-ed by claiming that by rejecting modern hormonal birth control, we are \u201cfetishizing the very things that might hold us back.\u201d This, all in the name of her idea of \u201cwomen\u2019s freedom.\u201d She posits that the trend away from a more medicalized and modern version of contraception may lead to \u201cgrave consequences\u201d for \u201cwomen\u2019s freedom\u201d and may potentially undo the work of past mainstream feminists. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Gen Z has been watching, and like many generations before them, they want to take matters into their own hands. New and better ideas behind fertility and contraception are being brought to light. The evidence is clear: NFP and FAM have significant pros, and HBCs have significant cons. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Milllenials like Whelan take the risks and throw them to the side in the name of sexual freedom and a warped idea of feminism.
