The headline reads, \u201cSmall Decline Seen in Ob\/Gyn Residency Applications in Abortion Ban States.\u201d Based on the headline, a reader would assume that medical school students looking to get into obstetrics\/gynecology residency programs for the first year post-<em>Dobbs<\/em>\u00a0were avoiding states where pro-life laws have been successfully enacted.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201ccross-sectional study of 2,463 ob\/gyn residency program applicants\u201d appeared in\u00a0<em>JAMA Network Open<\/em>\u00a0and was designed<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>To assess changes in the percentage of applicants to OBGYN residency programs by state based on abortion restrictions in place after the\u00a0<em>Dobbs v Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization<\/em>\u00a0(hereafter,\u00a0<em>Dobbs v Jackson<\/em>) US Supreme Court decision and examine whether applicants\u2019 preference for programs, as suggested by the distribution of application signals that express higher interest, was associated with abortion bans.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Of the nearly 2500 ob\/gyn residency applicants, 85.4 % were female.<\/p>\n<p>There were two things assessed by the study\u2019s authors. The first was the number of actual applicants to ob\/gyn residency programs and the second, the stated interest of medical students in ob\/gyn residency programs through a signaling program.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5ezn-9q2SYM?si=z-NfOCk1uKOkcpk3\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>While the study authors found that the number of applicants to residency programs was \u201cstatistically\u201d down in states with protective laws, it\u2019s not until the third paragraph in the\u00a0<em>MedPage Today<\/em>\u00a0article that the reporter notes that the study authors found that there was actually\u00a0<strong><u>no<\/u>\u00a0difference<\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0<em>interest<\/em>\u00a0medical students had in ob\/gyn residency programs in states with protective laws versus states without protective legislation. And then in the next paragraph, the reporter quotes the study\u2019s authors:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><strong>\u201cGiven that the goal of the program signaling initiative was to enable applicants to demonstrate their genuine interest\u2026 our findings in this first year may reflect an indication of true applicant intent and interest in specific programs rather than being reflective of the abortion restrictions,\u201d the authors wrote on the slight decrease in applicants to abortion-restricted states.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The study authors also noted, \u201cIt is unclear just what, if any, impact a small decrease in applicants to programs in states with abortion restrictions will have, and this warrants close follow-up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And later,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><strong>It is also important to note that the overall percentage of applicants who applied to programs in states with abortion restrictions and bans was still high (86.8%).
