UPDATE, 8\/8\/24: On August 6, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated their “U.S. Selected Practice Recommendations for Contraceptive Use<\/a>.” The document provides additional evidence that mainstream medical authorities are aware that progesterone (which is used for so-called “Abortion Pill Reversal”) can interfere with the efficacy of mifepristone. It clearly states that “concurrent administration of DMPA [synthetic progesterone] with mifepristone might slightly decrease medication abortion effectiveness and increase risk for ongoing pregnancy.”<\/p>\n

2\/10\/24: On Tuesday, February 6, the <\/span>Thomas More Society<\/span><\/a> published a <\/span>press release<\/span><\/a> detailing their <\/span>petition<\/span><\/a> to the California Supreme Court for dismissal of a <\/span>lawsuit<\/span><\/a> filed by California Attorney General Rob Bonta<\/a> against their clients \u2014 <\/span>Heartbeat International<\/span><\/a> (HBI) and <\/span>RealOptions Obria Medical Clinics<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>lawsuit<\/span><\/a> alleges that the two pro-life organizations are \u201cmisleading patients\u201d by offering them information about the administration of progesterone to attempt to counter the effects of the abortion pill mifepristone. This treatment is most commonly referred to as “<\/span>abortion pill reversal<\/span><\/a>“ (APR). The suit <\/span>accuses<\/span><\/a> HBI and RealOptions of making \u201cfalse or misleading statements\u201d and engaging in \u201cunlawful, unfair, and fraudulent business practices.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

THE TRUTH ABOUT APR<\/b><\/p>\n

To support these allegations, Bonta\u2019s <\/span>lawsuit<\/span><\/a> claims<\/span><\/a> that APR is \u201can unproven and largely experimental procedure\u201d which is \u201cnot backed by credible science.\u201d In their petition filed on Tuesday, Thomas More Society attorneys cite ample evidence to the contrary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Live Action News has repeatedly reported on APR\u2019s <\/span>mechanism of action<\/span><\/a> \u2013 it essentially works by supplementing the mother with the hormone progesterone to counteract the effects of mifepristone (the first drug in the abortion pill regimen), which inhibits the pregnancy-sustaining action of the woman\u2019s naturally occurring progesterone. Live Action News has also reported on APR\u2019s stated <\/span>safety and efficacy<\/span><\/a> and has published <\/span>numerous<\/span><\/a> stories<\/span><\/a> of <\/span>women<\/span><\/a> who were said to have been able to <\/span>save<\/span><\/a> their <\/span>children\u2019s<\/span><\/a> lives<\/span><\/a> by <\/span>following<\/span><\/a> the <\/span>APR<\/span><\/a> protocol<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

WHAT DO PRO-ABORTION SOURCES SAY?<\/b><\/p>\n

It\u2019s interesting to note, however, that even the <\/span>pro-abortion<\/span><\/a> American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has previously <\/span>noted<\/span><\/a> that progesterone can inhibit the efficacy of mifepristone<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In ACOG\u2019s 2020 medication abortion <\/span>practice bulletin<\/span><\/a>, which provides information to doctors who prescribe the abortion pill, it states: \u201c[A]dministration of DMPA on day 1 of the medication abortion regimen may increase the risk of ongoing pregnancy.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

DMPA is a method of long-acting birth control frequently referred to by its brand name, <\/span>Depo-Provera<\/span><\/a>. It <\/span>relies<\/span><\/a> upon synthetic progesterone<\/strong> for its contraceptive efficacy. In layman’s terms, ACOG\u2019s above statement essentially warns doctors that administering progesterone \u2013 even in its synthetic form \u2013 immediately after mifepristone can prevent the abortion pill from being \u201csuccessful.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This is precisely what APR advocates assert,<\/span><\/i> and this is the exact same mechanism of action relied upon by the APR protocol.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ACOG practice bulletin references a 2016 <\/span>study<\/span><\/a>, which found that \u201c[o]ngoing pregnancy after initial abortion treatment was significantly more common\u201d in women who had been given DMPA <\/span>with<\/span><\/i> mifepristone compared to those who had been given DMPA <\/span>after<\/span><\/i> their abortions were complete.<\/span><\/p>\n

A more recent (November 2023) <\/span>study<\/span><\/a> in the journal Contraception reached the same conclusion: \u201cConcurrent administration of DMPA with mifepristone may decrease medication abortion efficacy.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The World Health Organization (WHO) also <\/span>states<\/span><\/a> on its \u201cabortion care guideline\u201d page: \u201cImmediate initiation of intramuscular depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) is associated with a slight decrease in the effectiveness of medical abortion regimens.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Similarly, the <\/span>pro-abortion<\/span><\/a> Reproductive Health Access Front <\/span>claims<\/span><\/a> that \u201cthere is some evidence that Depo Provera decreases the effectiveness of mifepristone. Patients who choose Depo after a medication abortion \u2026 can receive the shot the same day if they accept possible decrease in effectiveness[.]\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Innovating Education in Reproductive Health, another <\/span>pro-abortion<\/span><\/a> organization, likewise <\/span>claims<\/span><\/a>: \u201cMifepristone binds to progesterone receptors; its affinity for the receptor is higher than that of progesterone itself. Administering progesterone<\/strong> in the depot or implant form at the same time could potentially out-compete mifepristone and decrease its efficacy<\/strong>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

O&G Magazine, a publication of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, also <\/span>warns<\/span><\/a>: \u201cIn the context of medical abortion, there is some concern that initiation of DMPA at the time of mifepristone administration may impair the progesterone-blocking action of mifepristone, reducing medical abortion efficacy.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In other words, numerous sources, none of whom have any affiliation with APR, and many of whom actively promote abortion, make the same claim that APR providers do, namely: progesterone can decrease the effectiveness of the first drug in the abortion pill regimen after it has already been ingested<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

AN INSIDIOUS DOUBLE-STANDARD<\/b><\/p>\n

Some of the above sources not only affirm this claim, but emphasize that women should be informed about it. The 2023 <\/span>study<\/span><\/a> published in Contraception states: \u201cPatients seeking medication abortion should be informed about these findings to help guide post-abortion contraceptive choices.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

And O&G Magazine <\/span>agrees<\/span><\/a>: \u201cWomen having a medical abortion should \u2026 be advised that there may be a slightly higher risk of continuing pregnancy if DMPA is initiated at the time of mifepristone administration.\u201d Even ACOG says<\/a> “[p]atients who select depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) for contraception” after taking the abortion pill “should be counseled” about DMPA’s ability to impact the efficacy of mifepristone.<\/span><\/p>\n

But when pro-life<\/em> organizations attempt to do exactly what is advised by these publications \u2013 namely, inform women that progesterone can stop a chemical abortion already in-progress \u2013 they face lawsuits and other forms of retaliation from abortion advocates.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is an insidious double-standard at play here. The <\/span>exact same information<\/span><\/i> is hailed as \u201cscience\u201d when pro-abortion sources report it, but is denounced as quackery when proclaimed by pro-lifers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Clearly, in the eyes of abortion advocates like AG Rob Bonta, the real crime being committed by organizations like HBI and RealOptions is that of saving lives by utilizing this information \u2014 which is in no way “pseudoscience.” Accusations that they are disseminating \u201cmisinformation\u201d are merely a flimsy cover for what is solely and decidedly an ideology-driven attack.<\/span><\/p>\n
