{"id":306374,"date":"2024-02-06T14:43:44","date_gmt":"2024-02-06T20:43:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=306374"},"modified":"2024-02-06T09:55:38","modified_gmt":"2024-02-06T15:55:38","slug":"new-hampshire-legislators-vote-against-bills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-hampshire-legislators-vote-against-bills\/","title":{"rendered":"New Hampshire legislators vote against pro-abortion amendment and pro-life bills"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Hampshire lawmakers last week rejected an effort to expand abortion in the state, while also voting down two proposals that would offer more protections to the state\u2019s preborn children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first vote occurred on February 1, when New Hampshire legislators voted 1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">93-184 for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gencourt.state.nh.us\/lsr_search\/billText.aspx?id=1114&amp;type=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CACR 23<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a constitutional amendment that would enshrine abortion as a constitutional \u201cright.\u201d Though that measure received a majority vote, it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seacoastonline.com\/story\/news\/state\/2024\/02\/03\/nh-house-nixes-15-day-abortion-ban-constitutional-right-to-abortion\/72448916007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did not receive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the three-fifths required to send the amendment before voters, and therefore failed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fnhrtl%2Fposts%2F779618877529910&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"634\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One lawmaker went so far as to hold her one-week-old daughter in defense of why the amendment \u2013 which would have allowed abortion up to birth \u2013 should <em>pass<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Having my third child, a little girl, has reinvigorated my commitment to making sure that every Granite Stater, including Daniella, has the right to make their own reproductive decisions,&#8221; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/new-hampshire-house-rejects-further-expansion-restriction-abortion-access\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Rep. Amanda Toll, the measure\u2019s sponsor. &#8220;We need to send this to the voters and let voters decide.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite claims like these, the killing of a preborn child is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a right. Abortion is the intentional homicide of a preborn human. No one has a right to take that life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zVk1qM1El9o?si=L1eYgI0Vj6MQkWxd\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rep. Bob Lynn countered that the amendment is unnecessary, as the state already has very permissive abortion laws. &#8220;There simply is no threat to abortion rights in this state, despite the never-ending political rhetoric to the contrary,&#8221; Lynn <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/new-hampshire-house-rejects-further-expansion-restriction-abortion-access\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &#8220;And therefore, this proposed constitutional amendment is totally unnecessary.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/australian-wife-mother-dies-first-trimester-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australian wife and mother dies following first-trimester abortion<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Thursday, members in the New Hampshire House also rejected <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gencourt.state.nh.us\/bill_status\/pdf.aspx?id=22282&amp;q=billVersion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HB 1541<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a bill that would have required abortions after 15 weeks to be committed in a hospital with a neonatal intensive care unit on site so that immediate care could be provided to the child if she survived the abortion. The bill would also have mandated that two doctors be present for abortions after the 15-week date.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, lawmakers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newhampshirebulletin.com\/2024\/02\/01\/house-defeats-15-day-abortion-ban-constitutional-right-to-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 363-11 against <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gencourt.state.nh.us\/lsr_search\/billText.aspx?id=1299&amp;type=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HB 1248<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a measure that would have protected all preborn children from abortion after just 15 days. The proposal would have eliminated nearly all abortions in the state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current New Hampshire law allows abortions through 24 weeks, though abortion may be committed even later if the mother\u2019s health is in danger or when the preborn child has received a life-limiting diagnosis. However, induced abortion \u2014 the direct and intentional killing of a preborn child in the womb \u2014 is not necessary, even in medical emergencies.
