Members in the French National Assembly, the country\u2019s lower house of parliament, overwhelmingly <\/span>approved a bill<\/span><\/a> Tuesday that would enshrine a \u201cright\u201d to abortion in the country\u2019s constitution. The measure passed 493-30.<\/span><\/p>\n

The proposal <\/span>would amend<\/span><\/a> Article 34 of the country\u2019s constitution to read: <\/span>\u201cthe law determines the conditions by which is exercised the freedom of women to have recourse to an abortion, which is guaranteed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

President Emmanuel Macron <\/span>announced his intention<\/span><\/a> to amend the constitution to protect abortion last November. At that time, it was met with pushback from pro-life groups.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cInstead of including abortion right in the French Constitution, it is urgent to establish a true abortion prevention policy aimed at avoiding a large number of personal tragedies by presenting other alternatives to the women concerned,\u201d the organization <\/span>Alliance Vita<\/a> said in a statement.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lawmakers used the U.S.\u2019s overturn of <\/span>Roe v. Wade<\/span><\/i> as justification that abortion should be constitutionally protected.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHistory is full of examples of\u2026 fundamental rights\u2026 which everyone\u2026 believed to have been definitively acquired, and which were then swept away\u2026 as we were recently reminded by the decision of the US Supreme Court,\u201d Justice Minister \u00c9ric Dupont-Moretti <\/span>said<\/span><\/a> in a speech before fellow lawmakers. \u201cWe now have irrefutable proof that no democracy, not even the largest of them all, is immune.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Though abortion supporters often speak of abortion as if it were a fundamental right, there is <\/span>no right<\/span><\/i> for anyone to kill an innocent human being.<\/span><\/p>\n
