This is a miraculous milestone for her, as she is also the only known surviving child to be born so early in gestation in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/baby-born-at-22-weeks-in-s-pore-defies-the-odds-and-is-now-a-healthy-five-year-old\">the country<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Tan Pih Lin at the department of neonatology at KK Women\u2019s and Children\u2019s Hospital <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/survival-rate-of-babies-born-very-pre-maturely-at-22-weeks-is-close-to-zero-sun-xueling\">stated<\/a>, \u201cChelsea [Kiew] is the only survivor at 22 weeks gestation in Singapore, which makes it an extremely rare and unique case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weighing just 1lb 12oz at birth, Chelsea stayed in the hospital for about five months to become stronger and overcome health obstacles.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chelsea\u2019s mother, Madam Lin Hsiao Chi, recalled that her labor with Chelsea began unexpectedly at home. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was petrified. But when I heard her crying, at least I knew she was alive,\u201d Lin described. Her husband, Raymond Kiew, helped deliver Chelsea with assistance from emergency medical staff over the phone. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At birth, Chelsea was very active and had a strong heartbeat. But at one point during the course of her hospital stay, she needed 100% oxygen and ventilator support. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She was later diagnosed with chronic lung disease, and required breathing support for nine months after being discharged from the hospital.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ggF7dEc5AOY?si=ratDvfJhduEv4Fi1\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her father remembers that during Chelsea&#8217;s time in the hospital, \u201cWe visited her every day, told her stories and encouraged her to believe in herself and explore the world. We believe such support is crucial for premature babies.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That love and support truly paid off. Chelsea now only needs routine checkups and can breathe easily as she draws, dances, and sings. The only lasting health condition she now has to be monitored for is a hole in her heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At age five, \u201cShe\u2019s a bit of an introvert,&#8221; says her father. &#8220;She will spend a lot of time observing you before she will play with you\u2026 She\u2019s very sensible, like she can see when I come back from office looking tired, and she\u2019ll cover me with a blanket.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ellie-21-weeks-guests-state-of-union\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> children <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/youngest-preemie-world-21-weeks-going-home\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">born<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/premature-baby-celebrates-first-birthday\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21 weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/doctors-suggested-abortion-premature-beat-odds\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22 weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who, when given proper medical support, have grown quickly and have had the opportunity to explore the wonderful world around them.
