{"id":305929,"date":"2024-01-29T12:42:44","date_gmt":"2024-01-29T18:42:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=305929"},"modified":"2024-01-29T09:51:54","modified_gmt":"2024-01-29T15:51:54","slug":"german-abortion-facility-buffer-zones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/german-abortion-facility-buffer-zones\/","title":{"rendered":"German lawmakers push for abortion facility buffer zones despite high court ruling"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>German Family Minister Lisa Paus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/germany-steps-up-crackdown-on-anti-abortion-protests\/a-64877764\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced legislation<\/a> Wednesday that would establish a buffer zone of 100 meters (320 ft) around the country\u2019s abortion facilities, as well as counseling centers that <strong>promote<\/strong> abortion. The legislation would also prohibit pro-life signs and posters. Violators could be fined up to \u20ac5,000 ($5,445).<\/p>\n<p>Though abortion is technically illegal in Germany, it is permitted in certain circumstances up to 12 weeks. In order to obtain an approval for abortion, a woman must first receive a counseling certificate. According to the country\u2019s Statistical Office, around 100,000 abortions are committed in the country each year.<\/p>\n<p>Pro-life speech in the country has come under fire in recent years, particularly as the 40 Days for Life organization has held twice-yearly prayer campaigns. Though pro-life sidewalk counselors primarily hold peaceful, prayerful vigils outside abortion facilities, they are regularly vilified as being threatening and intimidating.<\/p>\n<p>In speaking with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/germany-steps-up-crackdown-on-anti-abortion-protests\/a-64877764\">news outlet DW<\/a>, Claudia Hohmann, director of Frankfurt\u2019s Pro Familia Center \u2013 the German partner of Planned Parenthood \u2014 admitted that the proposed law was <em>expressly intended to limit free speech<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Hohmann also conceded that the pro-life advocates are not violent.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Freedom of speech is all well and good<\/strong>,&#8221; Hohmann told DW. &#8220;<strong>Just not here<\/strong>. It&#8217;s very targeted and that&#8217;s what is so perfidious about it.&#8221; She added, &#8220;<strong>Of course, we&#8217;re glad that they [pro-lifers] don&#8217;t shout at us or throw things at us<\/strong>, but that&#8217;s not the point. <strong>It&#8217;s a friendliness behind which lies a lot of aggression towards people<\/strong>.&#8221; (emphases added)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qpavu7Eznqw?si=gk6CT6sGIfhxi0d_\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, abortion advocates are worried that pro-lifers will be effective in their attempts to let women know that they have options other than abortion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We must effectively protect pregnant women from harassment and undue influence in front of advice centers, surgeries, and clinics,&#8221; Paus said in defense of her legislation.<\/p>\n<p>This proposal comes after a German high court <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/06\/29\/german-court-says-pro-lifers-can-still-pray-outside-abortion-mills-for-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ruled last year<\/a> that the country <em>cannot impose bans on peaceful pro-life gatherings outside abortion facilities<\/em>.\u00a0 Should the government go ahead and implement this buffer zone, a legal battle is expected to follow.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed buffer zone is just one of the ways that lawmakers are working to expand abortion in the country; within the last few years, legislators have also <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/germany-overturns-abortion-advertising\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">repealed a law<\/a> that prohibited advertising for abortions and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/germany-eases-access-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eased access<\/a> to the abortion pill.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/tell-congress-stop-the-doj-from-targeting-pro-life-americans\/?utm_campaign=doj_petition&amp;utm_medium=lan_website\"><b><i>The DOJ put a pro-life grandmother in jail this Christmas for protesting the killing of preborn children.
