The driver of the ranger, 46-year-old Jerry Miller, suffered minor injuries \u2014 but his passenger, 41-year-old Helen Edwards, who was pregnant, was seriously injured.<\/p>\n<p>Following the crash, Edwards gave birth and she and the baby were put in intensive care. The baby died two days later, according to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department (ACCPD).<\/p>\n<p>Police are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2024\/01\/17\/baby-dies-crash-amazon-athens-georgia\/72253104007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">investigating<\/a> the case as a homicide by vehicle, though charges have not yet been filed. The truck driver, 24-year-old Munjae Whatley, suffered minor injuries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe baby was subsequently delivered, and both mother and baby were placed in intensive care,\u201d officers wrote on January 16 in a Facebook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/accpolice\/posts\/pfbid03qS6M8RtpRq6pzDuKtg1iyWt2PQkkQ7KiW3vF9TiBDsdshwsnPXzXNsbttucsK8pl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a>. \u201cDuring a follow-up investigation, ACCPD learned the newborn baby passed away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Faccpolice%2Fposts%2Fpfbid03qS6M8RtpRq6pzDuKtg1iyWt2PQkkQ7KiW3vF9TiBDsdshwsnPXzXNsbttucsK8pl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"691\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>Amazon spokesperson Austin Stowe issued a statement to McClatchy News. \u201cThis is a tragic accident, and our thoughts and sympathies are with those involved,\u201d he said in an email. \u201cWe are supporting our Delivery Service Partner and Athens-Clarke County Police Department as they investigate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the baby&#8217;s death, police wrote in a news release, \u201cThe case is now being worked as a homicide by vehicle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Georgia also has a <a href=\"https:\/\/law.justia.com\/codes\/georgia\/2020\/title-40\/chapter-6\/article-15\/section-40-6-393\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">law<\/a> regarding motor vehicles and serious traffic offenses. The law states that &#8220;[a]ny person who, without malice aforethought, causes the death of another person through the violation of [<a href=\"https:\/\/wfirm.com\/determining-liability-after-a-car-wreck-in-georgia-homicide-by-vehicle-ocga-40-6-393\/#:~:text=The%20statutes%20that%20trigger%20a,40%2D6%2D395).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reckless driving<\/a>] &#8230; commits the offense of homicide by vehicle in the first degree, and upon conviction thereof, shall be punished by imprisonment for not less than three years nor more than 15 years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Georgia also has a law <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/georgias-top-court-leaves-six-week-abortion-ban-place-2023-10-24\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protecting<\/a> most preborn children from abortion after six weeks of pregnancy.
