According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jemh.ca\/issues\/open\/documents\/Did%20the%20Voluntary%20Assisted%20Dying%20Act%202017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research published<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0by Dr. David Albert Jones, Director, Anscombe Bioethics Centre in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Ethics in Mental Health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2023), the rate of suicide among the elderly in the Australian state of Victoria increased by an astonishing 50%, even exclusive of legalized assisted suicide and euthanasia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though assisted suicide is sold to the policymakers of Australia and America as a perverse method to reduce suicide generally, the societal outcome of permitting some people to legally commit suicide has caused many other people to attempt and succeed in their own suicides. It is as though suicide is a social contagion \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK207262\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which it is<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is in addition to a steady increase in demand for legal assisted suicide year over year since VAD was adopted in Australia. According to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safercare.vic.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/2023-08\/VADRB%20Annual%20Report%202022-23.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">annual report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Voluntary Assisted Dying Review Board\u2019s latest publication<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023, the number of deaths via assisted suicide in Victoria increased by 11% to 306, and the number of applications for assisted suicide increased by six percent over the previous year.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/vermont-assisted-suicide-deaths-quadrupled\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Report reveals Vermont assisted suicide deaths quadrupled over two-year period<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This data, coupled with the revelation that suicide among the elderly in Victoria has increased by 50% should give pause to any policymakers wondering if assisted suicide is good public policy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Australian state of Queensland, assisted suicide is happening at a shocking rate as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/australia-queensland-deaths-assisted-dying\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revealed by latest reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Australians there are dying from assisted suicide and euthanasia at rates even higher than Victoria or Western Australia.
