Whilst Caroline is now four years old, her start in life was challenging and she had to spend time in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).<\/p>\n<p>Block\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/boston\/news\/carolines-closet-meghan-block-preemie-onesies-nicu-clothes-donate\/#:~:text=needed%20several%20medical%20interventions%20that%20we%20thought%20we%20were%20prepared%20for%20and%20ended%20up%20in%20the%20NICU.%20That%20experience%20for%20me%20was%20just%20incredibly%20traumatic%20as%20her%20mom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recalls<\/a>\u00a0that Caroline \u201cneeded several medical interventions that we thought we were prepared for and ended up in the NICU. That experience for me was just incredibly traumatic as her mom\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Block said that she found visits to her daughter\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/boston\/news\/carolines-closet-meghan-block-preemie-onesies-nicu-clothes-donate\/#:~:text=Block%27s%20daughter%20Caroline%20is%20now%203%20years%20old%20and%20thriving%2C%20but%20in%20the%20first%20days%20of%20her%20life%2C%20the%20tubes%20and%20wires%20coming%20from%20her%20little%20body%20were%20overwhelming%20for%20Block.%20So%20much%20so%2C%20that%20her%20husband%20handled%20most%20of%20the%20NICU%20visits.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">overwhelming<\/a>\u00a0in the early days as she saw the tubes and wires coming from Caroline\u2019s body.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kind nurse buys clothes out of her own money<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One day, when her dad went to visit her, Caroline was wearing clothes. When he asked where the clothes had come from, he discovered that the nurse who was looking after Caroline had dressed her in an outfit she had bought with her own money.<\/p>\n<p>For Block, seeing Caroline in clothes was a turning point. \u201cSeeing her in clothes really humanized her in some ways for me. It was really, really healing\u201d, Block\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/boston\/news\/carolines-closet-meghan-block-preemie-onesies-nicu-clothes-donate\/#:~:text=Seeing%20her%20in,that%20for%20us.%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shared<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe gift that our nurse gave us, she didn\u2019t present it as a gift. She just dressed my baby. She had her drawer of little baby clothes that she puts on her patients\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just think it\u2019s incredible, but I also feel like it\u2019s not their job to have to do that for us\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5ezn-9q2SYM?si=jqk79YZda47a72i1\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Giving back to other families<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Inspired by this kind nurse, once Caroline and her mum were safely home, Block decided to help other families in the same way. She created an Amazon Wishlist of clothes for premature babies, called \u201c<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/boston\/news\/carolines-closet-meghan-block-preemie-onesies-nicu-clothes-donate\/#:~:text=Block%20created%20an%20Amazon%20Wishlist%20for%20preemie%20onesies%20and%20started%20donating%20them%20back%20to%20South%20Shore%20Hospital%2C%20creating%20a%20%22Caroline%27s%20Closet%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caroline\u2019s Closet<\/a>\u201d. Now she has donated more than 1,000 onesies to help little babies like Caroline. The ambitious mum\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/boston\/news\/carolines-closet-meghan-block-preemie-onesies-nicu-clothes-donate\/#:~:text=Block%20says%20her%20five%2Dyear%20plan%20is%20to%20be%20in%20every%20single%20NICU%20so%20a%20mom%20can%20walk%20in%20and%20have%20access%20to%20Caroline%27s%20Closet.%C2%A0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">five-year plan<\/a>\u00a0is to offer clothing to every NICU so that anyone can have access to Caroline\u2019s Closet.<\/p>\n<p>Beth Brooks, NICU nurse manager at South Shore Hospital where Caroline was born,\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/boston\/news\/carolines-closet-meghan-block-preemie-onesies-nicu-clothes-donate\/#:~:text=%22The%20simple%20task%20of%20being%20able%20to%20dress%20your%20baby%20is%20overwhelmingly%20important%20to%20parents%2C%22%20NICU%20nurse%20manager%20Beth%20Brooks%20said.%20%22It%20was%20very%20healing%20for%20her%20to%20see%20her%20baby%20in%20clothes%2C%20so%20she%27s%20given%20that%20to%20these%20families.%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0\u201cThe simple task of being able to dress your baby is overwhelmingly important to parents\u201d. \u201cIt was very healing for her to see her baby in clothes, so she\u2019s given that to these families\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Improving outcomes for extremely premature babies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A number of key studies in recent years have documented the improving outcomes for extremely premature babies. A 2004 Swedish\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15231908\/#:~:text=In%20infants%20with%20a%20gestational%20age%20of%2022%20to%2025%20weeks%2C%20a%20proactive%20perinatal%20strategy%20increases%20the%20number%20of%20live%20births%20and%20improves%20the%20infant%27s%20postnatal%20condition%20and%20survival%20without%20evidence%20of%20increasing%20morbidity%20in%20survivors%20up%20to%201%20year%20of%20age.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>\u00a0found that neonatal survival outcomes between 22 and 25 weeks gestation significantly improve when neonatal hospital staff take a proactive approach in the care of premature babies.<\/p>\n<p>A 2008 study based on a neonatal intensive care unit in London also\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/j.1651-2227.2007.00637.x#:~:text=Table%202.%20Overall%20survival%20to%20discharge%20at%20each%20gestational%20age%2C%20as%20a%20proportion%20of%20all%20admissions%20to%20the%20neonatal%20unit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a>\u00a0that neonatal survival rates at 22 and 23 weeks gestation had improved. In 1981-85, no babies who were born at these gestational ages survived to discharge. However, by 1986-90, 19% did and this increased to 54% in the period 1996-2000.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/article-abstract\/2788142\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study in 2022<\/a>\u00a0found almost four out of five babies born prematurely between 22 and 28 weeks gestation survive to discharge from the hospital.
