Desiree Figueroa, 29, and her mother, Clarisa Figueroa, allegedly carried out the horrific act together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Desiree Figueroa pleaded guilty on Monday to one count of first-degree murder, according to Cook County court records and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/chicago\/news\/desiree-figueroa-guilty-plea-murder-marlen-ochoa-yovanny-lopez\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CBS News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Desiree agreed to testify against her mother in a plea deal exchange for a 30-year sentence. The pair is facing charges of murder as well as kidnapping, dismembering a body, and concealing a homicide in the deaths of Ochoa-Lopez and her infant son, Yovanny Lopez.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Very sad news to share: Marlen Ochoa&#39;s baby, Yovanny Jadiel Lopez, has passed away. <\/p>\n<p>A family spokesperson says, &quot;He passed away this Friday&#8230; from his severe brain injury. Please keep his family in your thoughts &amp; prayers as they go through this difficult time.&quot;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cbschicago?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@cbschicago<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Yj23YNEsaF\">pic.twitter.com\/Yj23YNEsaF<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Audrina Bigos (@AudrinaBigos) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AudrinaBigos\/status\/1139496245129555969?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 14, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to police, shortly after Clarisa\u2019s adult son died of natural causes, she announced to her family that she was pregnant. She wasn\u2019t, but she spent months planning how she would find a newborn to pass off as her own and tell her boyfriend the child was his. She shared an ultrasound and photos of a baby\u2019s nursery on her Facebook page and then in March 2019, she and Ochoa-Lopez began speaking in a Facebook group for pregnant women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In April, Ochoa-Lopez went to Clarisa\u2019s home and left unharmed. But three weeks later, she returned after Clarisa offered her free baby clothes. As Desiree showed Ochoa-Lopez photos of her deceased brother in order to distract her, Clarisa came up from behind Ochoa-Lopez and strangled her with a cord. She was nine months pregnant at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prosecutors say that once the pair believed Ochoa-Lopez to be dead, Clarisa began to cut the baby from her womb with a butcher knife. After removing the baby, the mother and daughter wrapped Ochoa-Lopez\u2019s body in a blanket, put it in a plastic bag, and dragged it to an outside garbage can.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later that same day, Clarisa called 911 for help, stating that her newborn was not breathing. First responders found the baby blue and brought him to a hospital, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/chicago\/news\/marlen-ochoa-baby-yovanny-lopez-death-murder-baby-cut-from-womb\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claiming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he was her son. It took three weeks for the baby\u2019s true identity to be revealed after police began investigating Ochoa-Lopez\u2019s disappearance. Yovanny had suffered a severe brain injury and died two months later in his father\u2019s arms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clarisa\u2019s boyfriend, Piotr Bobak, pleaded guilty to one count of obstruction of justice for his part in helping to cover up the murders. He cleaned up the murder scene and was sentenced to four years in prison. He was given a credit of three years and eight months, and has since been released.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34619735\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2021, in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/greenjournal\/Abstract\/2021\/11000\/Homicide_During_Pregnancy_and_the_Postpartum.10.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">journal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Obstetrics &amp; Gynecology revealed that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/company\/newsroom\/homicide-is-a-leading-cause-of-death-in-pregnant-women-in-the-us\/#:~:text=Homicide%20is%20a%20leading%20cause%20of%20death%20in%20pregnant%20women%20in%20the%20US,-BMJ&amp;text=Women%20in%20the%20US%20are,experts%20in%20The%20BMJ%20today.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leading cause of death<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> among pregnant women is homicide.
