She was the lightest baby the hospital has successfully treated to date, weighing only 550 grams (1.21 pounds) and measuring only 11.8 inches at birth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xiang Jinbo, deputy director of the hospital&#8217;s neonatology department, told China Daily that th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e baby was given the nickname \u201cLittle Pea\u201d by the medical staff<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The news outlet <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinadaily.com.cn\/a\/202312\/06\/WS65706a98a31090682a5f1c9c.html#:~:text=The%20medical%20staff%20nicknamed%20her%20%22Little%20Pea%22%2C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that she was so <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">small her legs were as \u201cthin as an adult&#8217;s pinky finger, and her skin as delicate as a cicada&#8217;s wings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Little Pea was unable to breathe independently when she was born, so doctors performed a tracheal intubation, which saved her life. She was moved to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where medical providers gave her round-the-clock respiratory, nutritional, and other life support.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On September 22, 2023, after one month in the NICU, Little Pea was able to breathe with non-invasive respiratory support and weighed 2.20 pounds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After four very challenging months of continuous care from the medical team, Little Pea\u2019s weight had increased to 6.1 pounds, which is over five times her birth weight. She also measured 18.8 inches long. Reaching the necessary milestones, the littlest premature baby ever treated in Yichang was discharged from the hospital.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/baby-delivered-prematurely-save\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>\u2018Just in time\u2019: Baby delivered prematurely to save her life is now thriving<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yang, the mother of the baby, was able to spend Christmas with her new daughter at home thanks to the tireless work of the hospital staff. She <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinadaily.com.cn\/a\/202312\/06\/WS65706a98a31090682a5f1c9c.html#:~:text=The%20medical%20staff%20nicknamed%20her%20%22Little%20Pea%22%2C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> China Daily, &#8220;We are grateful to the doctors and nurses, without whom we wouldn&#8217;t be here with our baby in good health.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extremely premature babies like Little Pea are now much more likely to survive. In 2019, the survival rate for babies born at 23 weeks <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bapm.org\/articles\/109-new-bapm-framework-on-extreme-preterm-birth-published#:~:text=When%20the%20last,expected%20to%20survive.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doubled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, prompting a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bapm.org\/articles\/109-new-bapm-framework-on-extreme-preterm-birth-published#:~:text=When%20the%20last,expected%20to%20survive.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new framework for practice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the British Association of Perinatal Medicine (BAPM).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to research, in 2020 and 2021, there were a total of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmjmedicine.bmj.com\/content\/2\/1\/e000579#ref-11:~:text=Babies%20surviving%20to%20discharge%20from%20neonatal%20care%20(n)%3A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">261 babies<\/span><\/a>, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">born prematurely at 22 and 23 weeks<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who survived and were eventually discharged from the hospital. Sadly, government <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/abortion-statistics-for-england-and-wales-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abortion statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0also show that in 2021 alone, there were 1,054 babies aborted at 22 and 23 weeks gestation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catherine Robinson, Spokesperson for Right to Life UK, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/baby-girl-born-at-24-weeks-nicknamed-little-pea-home-in-time-for-christmas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cCongratulations to Little Pea for making it home in time for Christmas and to the staff who cared for her so well. It is amazing to see how tiny premature babies are surviving earlier and earlier.
