{"id":304598,"date":"2024-01-04T06:40:54","date_gmt":"2024-01-04T12:40:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=304598"},"modified":"2024-01-03T14:43:54","modified_gmt":"2024-01-03T20:43:54","slug":"study-christian-colleges-supporting-killing-preborn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-christian-colleges-supporting-killing-preborn\/","title":{"rendered":"Study finds increase in Christian colleges openly supporting the killing of preborn children"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/lc.org\/newsroom\/details\/010324-study-finds-increase-in-christian-colleges-openly-supporting-abortion\">Liberty Counsel<\/a>) <span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">A recent <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instituteforprolifeadvancement.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/FINAL-2023-Christian-Schools-White-Paper.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> by a pro-life research group has revealed that nearly 10 percent of colleges and universities affiliated with Christian churches, which publicly claim a historical Christian faith in their founding, have maintained a relationship with the abortion industry or have publicly expressed support for abortion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"tpl-the-content-archives\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The study, conducted by Students for Life of America\u2019s (SFLA) Demetree Institute for Pro-Life Advancement, stated the overturning of\u00a0<i>Roe v. Wade<\/i>\u00a0in June 2022 forced Christian colleges into a \u201cdecision year\u201d regarding taking an official stance on abortion. The results showed that 76 out of the 767 Christian colleges investigated \u201cacross the spectrum of the Christian faith\u201d were \u201cwilling to compromise biblical values\u201d by supporting abortion, a 10 percent increase from 69 schools found in a similar\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instituteforprolifeadvancement.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Christian-Schools-White-Paper.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>\u00a0in 2021.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">According to the study, this research is part of the SFLA\u2019s Christian Schools Project to raise public awareness of relationships with the abortion lobby within Christian academia and to encourage these schools to cut ties with the \u201cindustry of death\u201d and restore Christian values.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The researchers determined the 76 schools committed a combined total of 185 \u201cinfractions.\u201d The study defined \u201cinfractions\u201d as specific actions taken by school administrations that support abortion, including publicizing abortion providers as a \u201chealth resource,\u201d hosting abortion vendor events on campus, advertising abortion provider careers, internships, or volunteer opportunities, and publishing support for abortion in general on the school\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The most common infraction was listing Planned Parenthood as a \u201chealth resource,\u201d which accounted for 45 percent of all infractions. Listing Planned Parenthood as a \u201cschool accredited\u201d internship or as a volunteer opportunity combined for 31 percent. While hosting abortion events accounted for 16 percent, the final eight percent were \u201cgeneral abortion support statements,\u201d such as condemning the U.S. Supreme Court\u2019s\u00a0<i>Dobbs<\/i>\u00a0decision to overturn a perceived national right to abortion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5ezn-9q2SYM?si=SFnyLm0nXwaFGWJP\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The study employed a grading scale and assigned grades from an \u201cA+\u201d to an \u201cF\u201d depending on their number of infractions and commitment to being pro-life. Christian schools with no infractions and a relationship with a local pro-life pregnancy center earned an \u201cA+\u201d, while schools with no infractions but no proof of a relationship with a local pro-life pregnancy center earned an \u201cA\u201d grade. Schools with four or more infractions earned an \u201cF\u201d grade.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Notably, a combined 90 percent of Christian schools received top marks with 44 schools receiving an \u201cA+\u201d for no infractions and promoting local \u201clife-affirming\u201d pregnancy centers, while 653 schools earned an \u201cA\u201d grade by not promoting abortion or having a relationship with the abortion industry. However, 16 schools received an \u201cF\u201d grade while the remaining 54 schools received \u201cB,\u201d \u201cC,\u201d or \u201cD\u201d grades. The schools that received an \u201cF\u201d grade were American University; Augsburg University; Carroll University; Davidson College; Drew University; Duke University; Emory University; Macalester College; Muhlenberg College; Oklahoma City University; Rhodes College; Roanoke College; Southern Methodist University Grad School; St. Olaf College; Virginia Wesleyan University; and Wittenberg University.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">With the 10 percent increase in schools committing infractions, the researchers stated it was the 2022\u00a0<i>Dobbs<\/i>\u00a0decision reversing\u00a0<i>Roe\u00a0<\/i>that pulled Christian higher education schools that kept silently \u201cin the middle\u201d of the abortion issue \u201cout of their silence\u201d to take a stance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The study stated, \u201cThus, 2022 also became a decision year for Christian schools: to apply or not to apply God&#8217;s truth on the value of life. In 2021, the conclusion of our Christian school outreach found 69 schools in total having infractions by the end of that year. However, following the\u00a0<i>Dobbs<\/i>\u00a0decision in 2022, schools with infractions skyrocketed\u2026up to 76.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The researchers contacted each school by phone or email to inform them about their infractions and requested them to change their abortion stance. However, some Christian institutions \u201cdoubled down\u201d on their support for the abortion industry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Moravian University in Pennsylvania, which received a \u201cD\u201d grade, stated in an email that they would continue to support Planned Parenthood \u201cbecause it is important for [their students] to best understand the world they are entering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Earlham College in Indiana wrote that it did not have a unified stance on abortion but sees it \u201cas a matter of individual conscience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Institution representatives at Trinity University in Texas and Chaminade University of Honolulu \u201chung up mid-conversation\u201d with the researchers as they discussed the Christian Schools Project.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The researchers also noted several other key findings, including:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>87 percent of Planned Parenthood\u2019s 563 facilities are located within five miles of a college campus.<\/li>\n<li>The denominations with the most infractions were Methodist (22 percent), Presbyterian (20 percent), Catholic (18 percent), and Lutheran (16 percent).<\/li>\n<li>42 Christian schools made improvements towards valuing unborn life since 2021.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Liberty Counsel Founder and Chairman Mat Staver said, \u201cThe\u00a0<i>Dobbs<\/i>\u00a0decision has indeed forced people and institutions alike to take a stance on unborn life. This small percentage yet significant number of schools are compromising the biblical values from which their institutions were formed and are misleading thousands of their students, donors, and supporters. Christian colleges that abandon or compromise their foundational principles will become irrelevant.
