{"id":304581,"date":"2024-01-05T14:40:56","date_gmt":"2024-01-05T20:40:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=304581"},"modified":"2024-01-18T12:57:27","modified_gmt":"2024-01-18T18:57:27","slug":"2023-abortions-highest-still-good-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/2023-abortions-highest-still-good-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Though abortions in 2023 could be the highest recently reported, there is still good news"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Abortion numbers for 2023 are likely to reach over one million, the highest recorded in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>A review of Guttmacher&#8217;s Monthly Abortion Provision Study showed that between January 2023 and October of 2023, nearly 900,000 abortions were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/monthly-abortion-provision-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimated<\/a> to have been committed during this time.<\/p>\n<p>The data revealed that in this timeframe, an average of 88,000 abortions were estimated to have occurred each month.\u00a0 Extrapolating this data for the remaining portion of the year reveals that 2023 abortion are likely to reach over one million \u2014 the highest recorded since 2011. The Guttmacher Institute noted in a January 2024 email:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>In the first 10 months of 2023, there were an estimated 878,000 abortions in the formal US health care system, 94% as many abortions as were provided in 2020 (930,000). As more data are collected each month, estimates for past months become more precise. Each estimate is expressed as an uncertainty interval, which quantifies our confidence that the true value falls within a particular range,&#8221; Guttmacher also stated online.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Additional Abortion Data\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Abortion numbers have been ticking upward since 2017.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/article\/2022\/06\/long-term-decline-us-abortions-reverses-showing-rising-need-abortion-supreme-court\">2020<\/a>, before <em>Roe<\/em> was overturned, Guttmacher <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/guttmacher-abortion-spike-2020-pregnancies\/\">recorded<\/a> 930,160 abortions committed nationally \u2014 an increase of 67,840 over the 862,320 reported in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Live Action News <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-data-cdc-increase-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a> documented that in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/ss7209a1.htm?s_cid=ss7209a1_w\">2021<\/a>, the CDC recorded 625,978 total abortions reported nationally from 48 reporting areas. CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-report-unmarried-women-20s-most-abortions\/\">revealed<\/a> that unmarried women, those in their 20s, and women who have experienced a previous \u2018live birth\u2019 but never had a prior abortion were among those who obtained the majority of abortions. Tragically, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-black-hispanic-increased-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black women<\/a> saw the highest rate and ratio of abortions that same year.<\/p>\n<p>But previously reported estimates <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/estimates-abortions-decreased-increased-roe-wade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> by Society of Family Planning (SFP) appear to confirm the possibility of reaching over one million abortions in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>SFP&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/societyfp.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/WeCountReport_10.16.23.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">October 2023 #WeCount data<\/a> estimated that 1,072,240 preborn babies were killed after the reversal of <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>, between June 2022 and June 2023. This includes 88,600 committed by virtual-only abortion pill dispensaries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abortion Travel Doubled Since 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Abortion travel could be driving the higher-than-expected numbers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;According to the Guttmacher Institute&#8230; about 92,100 women crossed state lines for an abortion in the first half of 2023 &#8211; more than double the number in a six-month period in 2020,&#8221; Reuters recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/us\/abortion-battles-shift-to-medical-emergencies-travel\/ar-AA1m6FXy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>. &#8220;Some states, like Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma and Idaho, have sought to stop that by making it a crime to help, or pay for, such travel. Lawsuits over such measures are pending in Alabama and Idaho.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 2023 alone, according to Guttmacher, nearly one in five women <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-travel-new-ground-zero-post-roe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">traveled<\/a> out of state for an abortion, double the number in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;According to the latest data from the Guttmacher Institute\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/monthly-abortion-provision-study\">Monthly Abortion Provision Study<\/a>, the proportion of patients traveling to other states to obtain abortion care has doubled in recent years, reaching nearly one in five in the first half of 2023, compared with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/article\/2022\/07\/even-roe-was-overturned-nearly-one-10-people-obtaining-abortion-traveled-across\">one in 10 in 2020<\/a>,&#8221; the pro-abortion group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/2023\/12\/high-toll-us-abortion-bans-nearly-one-five-patients-now-traveling-out-state-abortion-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In an internet filled with abortion misinformation, I want to uplift the latest data from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Guttmacher?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Guttmacher<\/a>: 1 in 5 patients will travel out of state for abortion care in 2023. Wade<\/em> in June 2022,&#8221; Guttmacher claimed in a release e-mailed in early December. &#8220;People traveling for abortion care are mainly going to states that border those with total abortion bans or early gestational bans. States that had the highest increases in out-of-state abortion patients in the first half of 2023 include Florida, Illinois, Kansas, New Mexico and North Carolina.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Guttmacher then advocated the dangerous idea of <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/shielding-abortion-providers-consequences-women-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shielding<\/a> abortion providers from <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-abortion-shield-laws-prosecution-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prosecution<\/a> or licensing censure, despite many abortionists having had questionable practices leading to the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/families-haunted-memories-loved-killed-legal-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">harm or death<\/a> of women. In addition, the former &#8220;special affiliate&#8221; to Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion corporation in the nation, advocated for allowing anyone to commit abortions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolicies that protect and expand access, such as those that permit any qualified health care provider\u2014not just physicians\u2014to offer abortion care or shield laws that protect providers from criminal investigation from hostile states, have been critical in helping states meet patients\u2019 needs,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/about\/staff\/kelly-baden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kelly Baden<\/a>, vice president for public policy at Guttmacher, said in the release.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is Driving Increased Abortion Travel?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to Guttmacher, restrictions placed on abortion after the Supreme Court&#8217;s ruling to overturn <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> in the June 2022 <em>Dobbs<\/em> decision has been a factor in driving increased abortion travel.<\/p>\n<p>Since that time, Live Action News has documented multiple ways abortion advocates have worked at the behest of Big Abortion to expand the violent procedure. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Placing abortion vans in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/global-abortion-chain-us-mexico-border\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">border<\/a> states (<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/mobile-abortion-vans-churches\/\">here<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/mobile-abortion-pill-colorado-border\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-mobile-abortion-facility\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/mobile-abortion-clinics-proposed-oregon\/\">here<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Arranging free flights for women who seek abortions out-of-state (<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/texas-ministers-fly-poor-women-new-mexico\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pilots-flying-women-abortions\/\">here<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-travel-agent-workers\/\">here<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Creating abortion ships (<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-facilities-crowdfunding-relocate-open\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-boat-federal-waters\/\">here<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Abortion tourism (<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-trafficking-luring-teens-out-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-women-crossing-state-lines-dobbs\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-travel-new-ground-zero-post-roe\/\">here<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Abortion trafficking by luring teens out of state (<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-trafficking-luring-teens-out-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortions-trafficking-minors-planned-parenthood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>City and state abortion havens (<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/massachusetts-abortion-group-new-england-haven\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/st-petersburg-florida-against-abortion-travel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Billboards ads (<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-pushes-out-state-abortions-billboards\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/nyc-out-of-state-abortion-ads\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/newsom-billboards-pro-life-abortion-california\/\">here<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Companies offering financial abortion assistance (<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/companies-paying-abortion\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/companies-increase-abortion-benefits-reduce-maternity-parental\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/companies-promise-funding-abortion-travel\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/amazon-reimburse-employees-abortion-travel\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/yelp-promises-cover-abortion-travel\/\">here)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>And the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/?s=Bad+Actors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flouting<\/a> of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) safety regulations on the abortion pill, including <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-underground-preps-post-roe-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">underground networks<\/a> that illegally import the drugs across the border (<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/skirting-state-laws-abortion-pill-basements\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/unregulated-abortion-pill-founder-accessible\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/dea-warns-fake-prescriptions-deadly-abortion-pills\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-vigilante-dispense-drugs\/\">here<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, according to reports, private funding of abortion for women seeking to end the lives of their own children is also on the increase.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For example, the Baltimore Abortion Fund <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philanthropy.com\/article\/abortion-funds-face-slowdown-in-giving-a-year-after-supreme-court-ruling\">distributed almost three times the funds<\/a>\u00a0in 2022 as in 2021, and the National Network of Abortion Funds also estimated that their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.philanthropy.com\/article\/on-dobbs-anniversary-donors-must-take-the-long-view-in-response-to-abortion-access-crisis\">disbursements to callers seeking support tripled<\/a>\u00a0in the year after\u00a0<em>Dobbs<\/em>,&#8221; Guttmacher claimed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pro-life vs. Pro-abortion Legislation and Closed Facilities\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2023, according to a legislative analysis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/2023\/12\/state-policy-trends-2023-first-full-year-roe-fell-tumultuous-year-abortion-and-other\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> by Guttmacher, there were 80 pro-life measures enacted while \u201c129 measures protecting abortion access\u201d were enacted by 22 states this same year, \u201cthe highest number of protections ever enacted in a single year,\u201d Guttmacher claimed.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the pro-abortion organization claimed that as of mid-December of 2023, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/states.guttmacher.org\/policies\/\">4 states are enforcing total bans<\/a> with limited exceptions, including two new bans enforced this year,&#8221; and &#8220;7 <a href=\"https:\/\/states.guttmacher.org\/policies\/\">more<\/a> restrict access under limits that also would have been unconstitutional under <i>Roe<\/i>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yet, Guttmacher also pointed out that, &#8220;In 2023, four states\u2014Minnesota, New Mexico, Ohio and Oregon\u2014affirmed or established the legal right to abortion in their state constitutions or state statutes. Ohio did so through a ballot measure&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are now seven states that have protected the right to abortion since the Supreme Court\u2019s <i>Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization <\/i>decision (including California, Michigan and Vermont, all of which did so in late 2022),&#8221; Guttmacher added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Good News<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite the climbing abortion numbers, there is good news.<\/p>\n<p>A total of five cities <a href=\"https:\/\/sanctuarycitiesfortheunborn.org\/incorporated-cities\">passed pro-life sanctuary measures<\/a> of some kind in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, six counties also <a href=\"https:\/\/sanctuarycitiesfortheunborn.org\/counties\">passed pro-life sanctuary measures<\/a> in 2023, with five of the six passing ordinances limiting abortion trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>And, according to the latest report from the Abortion Care Network (ACN), 23 \u201cindependent abortion clinics (IAC)\u201d closed in 2023. As Live Action News <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/two-dozen-independent-abortion-businesses-closed-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a> detailed, IAC\u2019s \u2014 or \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ineedana.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indies<\/a>,\u201d as they are often called \u2014 exclude Planned Parenthood facilities, hospitals, and physician\u2019s offices.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, a recently published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.operationrescue.org\/archives\/exclusive-early-release-2023-annual-survey-on-the-landscape-of-abortion-clinics-nationwide\/#Skip-to-PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Operation Rescue (OR) survey<\/a>, which likely includes both independent abortion clinics as well as Planned Parenthood facilities, found that \u201cIn 2023, 49 abortion clinics closed or halted abortions. Between 2022 and 2023, a total of 136 abortion clinics have stopped killing.
