{"id":304437,"date":"2024-01-01T10:02:38","date_gmt":"2024-01-01T16:02:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=304437"},"modified":"2023-12-30T09:49:20","modified_gmt":"2023-12-30T15:49:20","slug":"teen-eagle-award-support-nicu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/teen-eagle-award-support-nicu\/","title":{"rendered":"Teen uses Eagle Award project to support babies in NICU"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/teen-born-at-23-weeks-gives-back-to-the-nicu-that-cared-for-him-as-a-baby\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Right to Life UK<\/a>) &#8212; A 15-year-old self-described neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) \u201cgraduate\u201d wants to help other prematurely born babies and their families create memories that will last a lifetime, and mark milestones in their development and journey.<\/p>\n<p>Aiden McKechnie was born extremely premature at\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kktv.com\/2023\/12\/07\/colorado-springs-nicu-graduate-looks-help-other-families-create-memories\/#:~:text=23%20weeks%2C%20weighing%20in%20at%20one%20pound%20and%20seven%20ounces\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">23 weeks<\/a>, weighing just 1lb 7oz. The teenager spent his first 137 days after birth being cared for in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).<\/p>\n<p>A member of the Eagle Scouts, Aiden decided to run a Scout project to support babies and families going through something similar to what he went through 15 years ago.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Making memories for a lifetime<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As part of the project, the young Scout fundraised in order to make personalised boards for families whose babies are graduating from the NICU. He then donated these boards to the NICU at the Children\u2019s Hospital in Colorado Springs.<\/p>\n<p>The boards mark the baby\u2019s name, size and weight at birth, and size and weight on the day they graduate from the NICU, ready to go home with their families. For Aiden, he hopes that families will be able to use the boards to make a memory and to feel reassured that they will be okay.<\/p>\n<p>He\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kktv.com\/2023\/12\/07\/colorado-springs-nicu-graduate-looks-help-other-families-create-memories\/#:~:text=have%20a%20good%20life%20with%20their%20child%2C%E2%80%9D%20Aiden%20said%2C%20%E2%80%9Cand%20to%20stand%20and%20take%20a%20picture%20knowing%20that%20they%E2%80%99re%20going%20to%20be%20okay%20from%20here%20on%20out\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0that he wants the families he is supporting to \u201chave a good life with their child, and to stand and take a picture knowing that they\u2019re going to be okay from here on out\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Staff and family share in the good news<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some staff at the hospital were working there when Aiden was a patient as a baby. They shared about how exciting it was to see what he had accomplished. Sharon Enoch, NICU Educator,\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kktv.com\/2023\/12\/07\/colorado-springs-nicu-graduate-looks-help-other-families-create-memories\/#:~:text=He%20not%20only%20does%20well%2C%20he%20exceeds%20in%20every%20aspect%20of%20his%20life%2C%E2%80%9D%20NICU%20Educator%20Sharon%20Enoch%20said.%20%E2%80%9CTo%20see%20him%20go%20from%20just%20over%20a%20pound%20and%20born%20at%2023%20weeks%20to%20the%20amazing%20young%20man%20he%E2%80%99s%20become...%20it%E2%80%99s%20incredible\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0\u201cHe not only does well, he exceeds in every aspect of his life. To see him go from just over a pound and born at 23 weeks to the amazing young man he\u2019s become\u2026 it\u2019s incredible\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Aiden\u2019s mum, Karla, was similarly amazed at what they have achieved as a family. She\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kktv.com\/2023\/12\/07\/colorado-springs-nicu-graduate-looks-help-other-families-create-memories\/#:~:text=It%E2%80%99s%20just%20been%20a%20wonderful%20journey%2C%E2%80%9D%20Karla%20said.%20%E2%80%9CWhere%20he%20started%2C%20where%20he%20is%20now%2C%20where%20our%20family%20is%20now%2C%20and%20that%20we%20can%20look%20back%20and%20share%20a%20positive%20message%20with%20other%20families\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">marvelled<\/a>\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s just been a wonderful journey. Where he started, where he is now, where our family is now, and that we can look back and share a positive message with other families\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fostering-children-care-god-heart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>She never considered fostering children, until God opened her heart<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Premature babies highlight contradiction in UK law<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Aiden was born at 23 weeks gestation \u2013 a time when, in the UK, his life could have been ended by abortion.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/abortion-statistics-for-england-and-wales-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">annual abortion statistics<\/a>\u00a0for England and Wales in 2021 show that there were 1,054 abortions for babies at 22 and 23 weeks gestation over that year. At the same time, according to a recent study, there were a total of\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/bmjmedicine.bmj.com\/content\/2\/1\/e000579#ref-11:~:text=Babies%20surviving%20to%20discharge%20from%20neonatal%20care%20(n)%3A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">261 babies born alive at 22 and 23 weeks<\/a>, before the abortion limit, who survived to discharge from hospital in 2020 and 2021.<\/p>\n<p>This means in the same hospital, on the same day, two babies at the same gestational age (22 or 23 weeks gestation) could have very different fates \u2013 one could have his or her life deliberately ended by abortion, and the other could be born prematurely and have a dedicated medical team provide the best care they can to try to save his or her life.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesperson for Right To Life UK, Catherine Robinson, said \u201cAiden\u2019s story is so heartwarming and provides such hope for families with babies born prematurely\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, there is a clear contradiction at the heart of our abortion law and current medical practice.
