She was born at 1lb 4oz and treated for 13 weeks at Wishaw General Hospital, during which time her weight dropped down to just 1lb 1oz.<\/p>\n<p>Because she was born so prematurely, Lottie needed five blood transfusions to help her start growing again. Her father Chris\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/scottish-news\/scots-dad-1lb-premature-baby-31609878#:~:text=%E2%80%9CWe%20knew%20she%20needed%20a%20transfusion%20before%20the%20numbers%20came%20back%20from%20the%20labs.%20Her%20colour%20would%20completely%20drain.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said\u00a0<\/a>\u201cWe knew she needed a transfusion before the numbers came back from the labs. Her colour would completely drain\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was like a whole new baby after her transfusion\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to her treatment, Lottie began to grow rapidly.\u00a0 \u201cLottie now weighs 9lb 4oz and has recently started weaning on to solid foods\u201d her father\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/scottish-news\/scots-dad-1lb-premature-baby-31609878#:~:text=%E2%80%9CLottie%20now%20weighs%209lb%204oz%20and%20has%20recently%20started%20weaning%20on%20to%20solid%20foods.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. Her parents are now looking forward to spending their first Christmas with their baby girl and her older brother.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Five months after Lottie was born, Chris made his first blood donation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The father expressed his gratitude to the blood donors who had made it possible for Lottie to receive treatment. He said that he had pledged to start donating blood himself when he saw how much difference the blood donations made to his daughter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/adoption-prayer-family-church\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>An adoption prayer didn\u2019t just change this family. It changed their church community<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/scottish-news\/scots-dad-1lb-premature-baby-31609878#:~:text=%E2%80%9CI%20wanted%20to%20give%20back%20because%20if%20it%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20for%20the%20kindness%20of%20strangers%20who%20gave%20up%20their%20time%20and%20blood%2C%20I%20wouldn%E2%80%99t%20have%20my%20little%20girl.%E2%80%9D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said,<\/a>\u00a0\u201cI wanted to give back because if it wasn\u2019t for the kindness of strangers who gave up their time and blood, I wouldn\u2019t have my little girl\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blood.co.uk\/news-and-campaigns\/the-donor\/special-blood-for-babies\/#:~:text=Newborn%20babies%20can%20only%20be%20transfused%20with%20blood%20that%20lacks%20the%20cytomegalovirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blood for newborns<\/a> needs to be specially tested for the cytomegalovirus (CMV), which is a mild virus that stays in the body for <a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blood.co.uk\/news-and-campaigns\/the-donor\/special-blood-for-babies\/#:~:text=Once%20you%20have%20the%20virus%2C%20however%2C%20it%20stays%20in%20your%20body%20for%20the%20rest%20of%20your%20life%2C%20meaning%20that%20when%20we%20test%20your%20blood%20for%20antibodies%20to%20it%2C%20it%20shows%20up%2C%20even%20if%20you%20have%20had%20the%20illness%20years%20ago%20and%20have%20long%20since%20recovered.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the rest of a person\u2019s life<\/a>.\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blood.co.uk\/news-and-campaigns\/the-donor\/special-blood-for-babies\/#:~:text=The%20not%2Dso,babies%2C%20for%20example\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donated blood<\/a>\u00a0for newborn babies or anyone with a poor immune system should not contain the antibodies for CMV.\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blood.co.uk\/news-and-campaigns\/the-donor\/special-blood-for-babies\/#:~:text=CMV%20is%20a%20mild%20and%20very%20common%20virus%2C%20similar%20to%20the%20virus%20that%20causes%20cold%20sores%20or%20chickenpox%20%E2%80%93%20in%20fact%2C%20around%2050%20to%2060%20per%20cent%20of%20adults%20in%20the%20UK%20have%20had%20it.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">As 50-60% of adults<\/a>\u00a0in the UK have had the virus, this factor puts a significant limitation on the blood that can be donated for premature babies like Lottie.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Medical advances continue to increase the odds of premature babies\u2019 survival<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While Lottie was born only three months prematurely, babies from as early as 22 weeks gestation are increasingly surviving. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/article-abstract\/2788142\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study in 2022<\/a>\u00a0found almost four out of five babies born prematurely between 22 and 28 weeks gestation survive to discharge from the hospital. It\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/article-abstract\/2788142#:~:text=In%20this%20observational,in%202008%2D2012.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a>\u00a0that from 2013 to 2018, with infants born between 22 and 28 weeks gestation, \u201csurvival to discharge occurred in 78.3% and was significantly improved compared with a historical rate of 76.0% among infants born in 2008-2012\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In the decade to 2019 alone, the survival rate for extremely premature babies\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bapm.org\/articles\/109-new-bapm-framework-on-extreme-preterm-birth-published#:~:text=When%20the%20last,expected%20to%20survive.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">doubled<\/a>, prompting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bapm.org\/resources\/80-perinatal-management-of-extreme-preterm-birth-before-27-weeks-of-gestation-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new guidance<\/a>\u00a0from the British Association of Perinatal Medicine (BAPM) that enables doctors to intervene to save premature babies from 22 weeks gestation. The<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/bmjmedicine.bmj.com\/content\/2\/1\/e000579#ref-11:~:text=Guidance%20on%20survival%20focused,of%20the%20perinatal%20team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0previous clinical guidance<\/a>, drafted in 2008, set the standard that babies who were born before 23 weeks gestation should not be resuscitated.<\/p>\n<p>Research published in November 2023 by academics at the University of Leicester and Imperial College London\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/threefold-increase-in-number-of-babies-born-at-22-weeks-who-survive\">found<\/a>\u00a0the number of babies born at 22 weeks gestation who survive to discharge from hospital tripled between 2018-19, before the BAPM guidance was introduced, and 2020-21, after the BAPM guidance was introduced.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesperson for Right To Life UK, Catherine Robinson, said \u201cBaby Lottie\u2019s father, Chris, is rightfully delighted that his daughter is alive and well to spend Christmas with her family.
