Her firstborn daughter was rushed away to be resuscitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen she was born, I didn\u2019t hear her crying and she was really not responsive so we didn\u2019t get that skin-to-skin contact straight away. My husband, Euan, and I briefly got to see her but someone was breathing for her with a hand pump which was overwhelming. I just wanted to hold her,&#8221; she <a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pressandjournal.co.uk\/fp\/news\/aberdeen-aberdeenshire\/6284116\/hannah-miley-premature-birth\/#:~:text=When%20she%20was,to%20hold%20her\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recalled<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From trauma to joy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The retired swimming champion\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/sport\/11628466\/hannah-miley-premature-baby-horror\/#:~:text=She%20was%20born,to%20be%20resuscitated.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recalls<\/a>\u00a0that it was \u201ctraumatic\u201d seeing her daughter lying limp and needing to be resuscitated. Miley was only\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/sport\/11628466\/hannah-miley-premature-baby-horror\/#:~:text=Miley%2C%20who%20represented%20Team%20GB%20at%20three%20Olympic%20Games%2C%20was%20able%20to%20have%20more%20contact%20with%20Nula%20as%20her%20daughter%E2%80%99s%20lungs%20improved.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allowed<\/a>\u00a0to look at her daughter as she was taken away, and had to wait for Nula\u2019s lungs to improve before she could have more contact.<\/p>\n<p>She\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pressandjournal.co.uk\/fp\/news\/aberdeen-aberdeenshire\/6284116\/hannah-miley-premature-birth\/#:~:text=all%20it%20took%20was%20her%20to%20wrap%20her%20hand%20round%20my%20finger%20in%20the%20incubator%20and%20I%20was%20in%20absolute%20awe%20with%20her\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shared<\/a> the moment of joy when she was able to touch her daughter: \u201c[A]ll it took was her to wrap her hand round my finger in the incubator and I was in absolute awe with her.&#8221;After a month of Nula being in the hospital, Miley and her husband were able to take their little girl home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s amazing,&#8217; she <a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pressandjournal.co.uk\/fp\/news\/aberdeen-aberdeenshire\/6284116\/hannah-miley-premature-birth\/#:~:text=It%E2%80%99s%20amazing%2C%20we%20can%E2%80%99t%20imagine%20life%20without%20her.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cwe can\u2019t imagine life without her.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortions-trafficking-minors-planned-parenthood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>\u2018We never tell\u2019: Planned Parenthood helping minors travel \u2018every day\u2019 for abortions<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The couple\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pressandjournal.co.uk\/fp\/news\/aberdeen-aberdeenshire\/6284116\/hannah-miley-premature-birth\/#:~:text=neonatal%20unit%20were-,fantastic,-.%20And%2C%20you%20meet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0that they received \u201cfantastic\u201d support from the neonatal unit and other families that were going through something similar. Through sharing her story, the two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pressandjournal.co.uk\/fp\/news\/aberdeen-aberdeenshire\/6284116\/hannah-miley-premature-birth\/#:~:text=Hannah%20hopes%20sharing%20her%20experience%20of%20giving%20birth%20prematurely%20will%20help%20spread%20awareness%20and%20reassure%20other%20families%20that%20support%20is%20available.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hopes<\/a>\u00a0to raise awareness of premature birth and offer reassurance to families that there is excellent support available.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Survival rate for extremely premature babies doubles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the decade to 2019 alone, the survival rate for extremely premature babies\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bapm.org\/articles\/109-new-bapm-framework-on-extreme-preterm-birth-published#:~:text=When%20the%20last,expected%20to%20survive.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">doubled<\/a>, prompting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bapm.org\/resources\/80-perinatal-management-of-extreme-preterm-birth-before-27-weeks-of-gestation-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new guidance<\/a>\u00a0from the British Association of Perinatal Medicine (BAPM) that enables doctors to intervene to save premature babies from 22 weeks gestation. The<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/bmjmedicine.bmj.com\/content\/2\/1\/e000579#ref-11:~:text=Guidance%20on%20survival%20focused,of%20the%20perinatal%20team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0previous clinical guidance<\/a>, drafted in 2008, set the standard that babies who were born before 23 weeks gestation should not be resuscitated.<\/p>\n<p>Once a mother is over 22 weeks pregnant, if her baby is born prematurely, the chances of survival increase week-by-week due to technical advances, better planning so pregnant mothers who go into preterm labour go straight to specialist units, and the increased use of steroids.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesperson for Right To Life UK, Catherine Robinson, said \u201cCongratulations to Hannah, Euan and Nula. It\u2019s wonderful to hear about the support they all received to make sure that Nula made it home safely.
