{"id":304141,"date":"2023-12-25T15:22:05","date_gmt":"2023-12-25T21:22:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=304141"},"modified":"2023-12-27T09:33:50","modified_gmt":"2023-12-27T15:33:50","slug":"preemie-evie-home-christmas-nicu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/preemie-evie-home-christmas-nicu\/","title":{"rendered":"Born at just 14 ounces, preemie Evie is home for Christmas after months in NICU"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madison Hickey and Dylan Statler were expecting their baby girl to come in the summertime, but were shocked when she was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksdk.com\/article\/news\/local\/making-a-difference\/making-a-difference-premature-baby\/63-e160ae1a-d79c-4cab-9f14-3b4f8612eb41\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">born<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in March, at just 23 weeks old. \u201cIt was very scary getting rushed back to OR\u2026 I wasn\u2019t sure if I would make it, if she would make it\u2026\u201d reflected Madison. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt all happened so fast, kind of like a dream\u2026 a nightmare,\u201d Dylan explained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born weighing just 14 ounces, Evie Statler began an uphill fight for life. Due to her prematurity, many complications arose, and Evie has so far spent \u201cher entire life\u201d in the NICU, as her mother explained. The St. Louis Children\u2019s hospital has given fantastic care and support through all the ups and downs of the Statler\u2019s NICU stay. Dr. Melissa Riley explained that at just 23 weeks, the lungs and immune system are still very immature and need support to develop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 1px solid #e6e6e6;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ksdk.com\/embeds\/video\/responsive\/63-78c06fe7-6416-4372-b9af-baa151e03cbb\/iframe\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s one thing to survive, but to survive without complications\u2014that\u2019s even more rare\u2026The lungs are often very immature, the intestines are very immature\u2026very prone to infection because the immune system is very immature,\u201d said Dr. Riley.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During their stay at the hospital, Evie&#8217;s father Dylan began to express his emotions through painting. He created a piece called \u201cWaiting for Her Arrival,\u201d which was recently accepted and is now on display at the 39th Annual Arts St. Louis Exhibition. He explained, \u201cWhen you\u2019re expecting someone special to come to your home, you know, you kinda tidy it up, you know, put the flowers in the vase and then you just wait for them to arrive. So that was like a hope.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That hope sustained them through the past nine months in the NICU. And now, they can take Evie home just in time for Christmas. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat we\u2019ve seen over the past several weeks is this slow, steady, beautiful progress, and her development is blossoming,\u201d Dr. Riley shared.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to innovative medical care, preemies are surviving at younger and younger ages. Eliora \u201cEllie\u201d Schneider of Kansas, was born in 2017 at just 21 weeks and 6 days, also weighing 14 ounces. Born at St. Luke\u2019s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri \u2014 the first hospital in the area to practice NICU care for babies younger than 24 weeks old \u2014 Ellie was able to overcome and develop despite the odds. As Live Action News has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ellie-21-weeks-guests-state-of-union\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> previously, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kshb.com\/news\/local-news\/miracle-baby-born-after-21-weeks-celebrates-her-first-birthday\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KSBH Kansas City<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201c\u2018Nationally\u2026 babies born prior to the 24-week mark\u2026 have a 6 percent survival rate, but at Saint Luke\u2019s, they have a 50 percent survival rate.\u2019 It\u2019s clear that medical intervention has made a huge difference.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5ezn-9q2SYM?si=o6o0dr2AhVTVgrGf\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evie\u2019s mother Madison tearfully shared how grateful she is for the people who have been caring for her daughter. \u201cWe wouldn\u2019t be here without them [NICU staff]\u2026 they feel like a second family to us and they\u2019re amazing, they\u2019ve been a light in our lives,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dylan expressed that \u201c\u2026 for the timing to line up with Christmas, it\u2019s like, symbolic, almost like, yeah, she\u2019s our gift.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/tell-congress-stop-the-doj-from-targeting-pro-life-americans\/?utm_campaign=doj_petition&amp;utm_medium=lan_website\"><b><i>The DOJ put a pro-life grandmother in jail this Christmas for protesting the killing of preborn children.
