{"id":303682,"date":"2023-12-18T18:40:41","date_gmt":"2023-12-19T00:40:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=303682"},"modified":"2023-12-18T16:23:32","modified_gmt":"2023-12-18T22:23:32","slug":"killing-preborn-children-heart-attacks-cancer-view","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/killing-preborn-children-heart-attacks-cancer-view\/","title":{"rendered":"Is killing preborn children like treating heart attacks or cancer? &#8216;The View&#8217; seems to think so."},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a recent episode of &#8220;The View,&#8221; the talk show\u2019s hosts turned their conversation to recent news of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/3-key-facts-texas-aborting-baby-disability\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas woman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who sought a 21-week <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/live-action-reality-abortion-de\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D&amp;E abortion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on her preborn baby with Trisomy 18. Although a lower court initially said she could go forward with an abortion, the state\u2019s Supreme Court this week ultimately denied it, much to the ire of abortion supporters across the country. This pro-abortion outrage found a platform on &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The View<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&#8221; where former Good Morning America host Sara Haines attempted to utilize a very odd argument against pro-lifers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI tend to think when people say it\u2019s God\u2019s will, it\u2019s a miracle, it\u2019s life,\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newsbusters.org\/blogs\/nb\/nicholas-fondacaro\/2023\/12\/08\/view-gods-will-pro-lifers-die-rather-get-cancer-treatment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, reading off her notes. \u201cIf it&#8217;s God&#8217;s will on the way in, it should be God&#8217;s will on the way out too. That brings into question are you taking heart attack medication? Are you treating your cancer? Are you dying when you said you should? Because if we\u2019re going to argue about life in, then let&#8217;s be honest about life out. Don&#8217;t go to the hospital if you&#8217;re hurting because it is God&#8217;s will. Like, I don&#8217;t like the inconsistencies and the hypocrisy when people weaponize religion on this issue.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"MRC TV video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mrctv.org\/embed\/584307\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haines\u2019 comments are profoundly misguided. Not only is her argument based on the fundamentally misguided premise that abortion is a type of health care, but she also prejudicially stereotypes pro-lifers\u2019 motivations in an unhelpful and unfair way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Health care is pro-life\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haines\u2019 claim on &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The View&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was not a serious argument based on the sincerely-held beliefs of pro-lifers, but instead appeared to be an attention-grabbing way to score a few points with the audience, claiming if they&#8217;re pro-life, they shouldn&#8217;t utilize medical treatments for heart attacks or cancer. \u201c\u2019If it&#8217;s God&#8217;s will on the way in, it should be God&#8217;s will on the way out too,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But health care is the process of promoting or maintaining physical, emotional, or mental well-being. Properly done, it is an undeniable good. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haines was right to talk about taking medication for preventing heart attacks, treating cancer, and even palliative care at the end of life as health care. But abortion by design <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">destroys<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a living human organism by poisoning, suction, dismemberment, or lethal injection. A sick baby can be treated, but the point of abortion is a dead baby. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By definition, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/prolifereplies.liveaction.org\/medically-necessary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abortion cannot be health care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haines is correct when she implies that pro-lifers believe that life should be respected until natural death (\u201cGod\u2019s will on the way out\u201d), <strong><em>which is part of the reason we oppose abortion<\/em><\/strong>. <em>But respecting a \u201cnatural death\u201d doesn\u2019t mean foregoing medical care. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, when preborn babies are treated as fully human patients who deserve medical care before and after birth, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-legacy-conversations-health-care\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the field of medicine is able to grow by leaps and bounds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Because of a belief in the worth of pre-born babies, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-study-shows-many-premature-babies-can-survive-as-early-as-22-weeks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NICU care has developed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in-utero surgery has improved to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/mom-in-utero-surgery-spina-bifida\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treat conditions like spina bifida<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and even life expectancy for people with Down syndrome has increased dramatically. Even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/trisomy-18-not-automatic-death-sentence-proof\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trisomy 18<\/span><\/a>, though labeled as<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cincompatible with life,\u201d can be survivable with proper medical treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Texas issue: sick babies shouldn&#8217;t be killed\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The case that the ladies of &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The View&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were discussing was that of Kate Cox, a woman pregnant with a 20-week-old baby diagnosed with Trisomy 18, a condition which many babies are not expected to survive, but <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/families-trisomy-18-fire-back-calls-death\/\">some certainly do<\/a>. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/22172-edwards-syndrome\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a>, the condition doesn\u2019t carry any extraordinary risk of maternal complications. (For context, the most premature baby was born at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/21-weeks-premature-baby-survive\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21 weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Texas Supreme Court ruling, Kate\u2019s life was not threatened by continuing to carry her baby, and if her life were in danger, she wouldn\u2019t need a judge\u2019s opinion to save her life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;When she sued seeking a court\u2019s pre-authorization, Dr. Karsan did not assert that Ms. Cox has a &#8216;life-threatening physical condition&#8217; or that, in Dr. Karsan\u2019s reasonable medical judgment, an abortion is necessary because Ms. Cox has the type of condition the exception requires,\u201d reads the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ruling\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ruling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cAny parents would be devastated to learn of their unborn child\u2019s trisomy 18 diagnosis. Some difficulties in pregnancy, however, even serious ones, do not pose the heightened risks to the mother the exception encompasses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Our ruling today does not block a life-saving abortion in this very case if a physician determines that one is needed under the appropriate legal standard, using reasonable medical judgment,\u201d the ruling continued. \u201cNothing in this opinion prevents a physician from acting if, in that physician\u2019s reasonable medical judgment, she determines that Ms. Cox has a &#8216;life threatening physical condition&#8217; that places her &#8216;at risk of death&#8217; or &#8216;poses a serious risk of substantial impairment of a major bodily function unless the abortion is performed or induced.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was some speculation that Cox\u2019s water may have broken, increasing the risk for infection after preterm rupture of the membranes (PPROM). But as Live Action News has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-blamed-risking-life-standard-feticide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pointed out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, abortion is not standard of care for treatment of PPROM.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The real reason for the abortion, as Haines herself pointed out, is that Cox had had previous C-sections before, and that delivery of her baby \u2013 rather than a violent D&amp;E abortion \u2013 would have \u201crisked her future fertility.\u201d In other words, instead of having her baby live her last moments knowing only the love of his parents, it seemed preferable to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abortionprocedures.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dismember the almost viable baby piece by piece<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haines claimed denying Cox an abortion is \u201cpro cruelty\u201d and \u201cpro inhumanity.\u201d But the case very much appears to be of parents not willing to risk future futility on a sick or \u201cdefective\u201d baby, so they could try again later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isn\u2019t that pro-cruelty? Isn\u2019t it pro-inhumanity to discard the sick and the weak before their natural death?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Abortion is not strictly a religious issue\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The media loves to paint all pro-lifers as the same red state Christian stereotype, so it\u2019s no surprise Haines reached for that immediately. However pro-lifers come from all walks of life, all socioeconomic backgrounds, all religious backgrounds, and are in all parts of the country. They all hold a diversity of reasons for being pro-life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many abortion supporters love to tell pro-lifers to \u201cstop pushing religion\u201d when they try to defend the inherent right to life, there is a significant swath of pro-lifers who believe in the value of human life who aren\u2019t religious. And in fact, it\u2019s not difficult to argue a scientifically sound, logically consistent case for being pro-life without making reference to religion at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rule of law in the country assumes that humans have a right to life and rightly punishes people who violate that principle. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/secularprolife.org\/abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secular Pro-Life argues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that preborn babies logically fall under this, as they are human: zygotes, embryos, and fetuses are scientific terms that describe different stages in human development. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preborn babies have human DNA and are separate organisms that will eventually develop into maturity. They are human. Abortion supporters must make a case over who it is permissible to kill if they want to exclude preborn babies from having the right to life, as they are living human organisms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/tell-congress-stop-the-doj-from-targeting-pro-life-americans\/?utm_campaign=doj_petition&amp;utm_medium=lan_website\"><b><i>The DOJ put a pro-life grandmother in jail this Christmas for protesting the killing of preborn children.
