{"id":303648,"date":"2023-12-17T11:32:18","date_gmt":"2023-12-17T17:32:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=303648"},"modified":"2023-12-21T12:46:36","modified_gmt":"2023-12-21T18:46:36","slug":"national-sex-ed-webinar-children-anger-parents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/national-sex-ed-webinar-children-anger-parents\/","title":{"rendered":"National Sex Ed Conference webinar: Children are &#8216;in danger&#8217; when parents have a say in sex ed"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On December 7, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ethicsandeducation.wceruw.org\/tag\/lisa-andersen\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lisa Andersen, PhD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Lauren-Bialystok\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lauren Bialystok, PhD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> presented a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/karlyn.substack.com\/p\/exclusive-parents-dont-have-rights\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">webinar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sexedconference.com\/2023-nsec-webinars\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Sex Ed Conference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SexEdConference\/status\/1729986720471404734\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should Parents Have Rights in Sex Education?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d It insinuated that the very concept of parental rights was questionable at best, and that parents must share authority over their children with other so-called \u201cstakeholders,\u201d including teachers and the government.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_303649\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-303649\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-303649 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/parents-rights-700x321.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/parents-rights-700x321.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/parents-rights-300x138.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/parents-rights-768x353.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/parents-rights-500x230.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/parents-rights.jpg 1309w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-303649\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">slide from &#8220;Should Parents Have Rights in Sex Education?&#8221; webinar<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>BACKGROUND<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Sex Ed Conference, at which the webinar was presented, is a project of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sexedconference.com\/about-cse\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for Sex Education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which, in turn, is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-northern-central-southern-new-jersey\/community-education\/center-for-sex-education\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">operated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/sex-deck-cards-planned-parenthood-9th-grade\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planned Parenthood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Northern, Central, and Southern New Jersey. Its executive director, Bill Taverner, has a controversial <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-children-sexual-porn\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">history;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he has advocated for exposing children to pornography and has argued that children are \u201csexual beings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, Lisa Andersen has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/longestshortesttime.com\/talking-to-kids-about-the-birds-and-the-bees\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-sex-ed-illinois-bill\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">controversial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2014\/09\/21\/350366435\/it-may-be-perfectly-normal-but-its-also-frequently-banned\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">frequently banned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and sexually explicit (some have even called it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clmagazine.org\/topic\/enemies-of-life\/planned-parenthood-pornography\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pornographic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) book, \u201cIt\u2019s Perfectly Normal\u201d \u2013 which was written by a former Planned Parenthood National Board of Advocates member \u2013 for ages 10-14. She has also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/longestshortesttime.com\/talking-to-kids-about-the-birds-and-the-bees\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-abortion-children\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pro-abortion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, quasi-pornographic, animated sex-ed website <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/selling-sex-children-groomed-early-sexual-activity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AMAZE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for ages 14 and up, noting that the site is \u201cgreat for younger kids, too.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, at least one of the webinar&#8217;s presenters has a history of promoting sexually explicit content as being good for children; meanwhile, the webinar was hosted by an organization that has a history of doing the same.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cPARANOID\u201d PARENTS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is understandable that parents might object to their children being exposed to sexually explicit content. But that didn\u2019t stop Andersen from calling all parents \u201cparanoid\u201d and stating that some concerned parents are really just \u201ctrying to somehow trap or catch\u201d sex educators, rather than sincerely advocating for their children\u2019s best interests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andersen also criticized the idea that family stability is essential to national\/societal stability, calling it \u201coutright weird\u201d and \u201ca conspiracy.\u201d Research, however, has consistently demonstrated that family stability is directly correlated with social stability, and that unstable families contribute to social problems like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6889959\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crime<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prb.org\/resources\/family-instability-in-childhood-affects-american-adults-economic-mobility\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poverty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>PARENTAL RIGHTS: A CLOAK FOR HATE?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the most concerning statements were made by Lauren Bialystok. She claimed that the invocation of parental rights constitutes a \u201cblur[ring of] categories in ways that \u2026 are pretty deliberate and nefarious.\u201d This implies both that parent advocates are devious and dangerous, and that parental rights are not even real. Bialystok further emphasized the alleged make-believe nature of parental rights by stating that they \u201care not a function of universal human rights,\u201d and that \u201crights language is a bit forced in [parents\u2019] case.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She insinuated that parental rights language and advocacy is merely a cloak for an anti-LGBTQ agenda, stating: \u201cA lot of so-called parents\u2019 rights groups are really taking aim at the rights of other specific individuals and groups of individuals. LGBTQ people are a favorite target.\u201d She further claimed that legislation designed to protect parental rights is \u201creally just a cover for trying to unroll decades of progress in LGBTQ inclusion and rights.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>PARENTS LABELED INCOMPETENT AND DANGEROUS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bialystok went on to assert that parents are often incompetent, neglectful, and even dangerous when it comes to instructing their children. \u201c[P]arents who say that teachers and schools shouldn\u2019t be teaching their kids about sexuality and gender, they don\u2019t really teach their kids either,\u201d she stated. \u201cThey are often misinformed or not up-to-date about topics in sexuality education,\u201d including \u201cinformation on contraception or STIs,\u201d Bialystok claimed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are dangers in outsourcing sexuality education to parents,\u201d she said, adding that parents who \u201ctry[] to reduce the children\u2019s [access] \u2026 to one particular message tend[] to put in danger children who don\u2019t have access to other views and other sources of information.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bialystok argued that parents who object to public school sex education work against the best interests of their children. She insinuated that it\u2019s okay for children\u2019s sex ed to be graphic, because most children have already been exposed to pornography via the internet anyway. &#8220;Increasingly in the last 10 years \u2026 parents across the political spectrum drastically underestimate their children\u2019s exposure to pornography and sexually graphic material, because with smart phones, game\u2019s over,&#8221; she stated. &#8220;You may think you can shelter your kids from pornography, or that school sexuality education is pornographic \u2014 we\u2019re too late, the kids are exposed to it whether they\u2019re looking for it or not.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also stated that \u201cchildren have the right to privacy in their sexual behavior,\u201d which presumes children are sexual by nature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea that children are born sexual can be traced to the work of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/alfred-kinsey-collaborated-nazi-whitewashed-crimes-children\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alfred Kinsey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who based his conclusions regarding children\u2019s alleged sexuality on his supposed &#8220;research&#8221; involving the exploits and anecdotes of predatory pedophiles. As one Kinsey critic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/alfred-kinsey-collaborated-nazi-whitewashed-crimes-children\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">noted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, \u201cLooking to sexual molesters for information on childhood sexuality is like drawing conclusions on the sexuality of adult females from the testimony of rapists.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In spite of the nonsensical and deeply offensive basis for his ideas, Kinsey\u2019s assertion that kids are sexual by nature has been widely and uncritically <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/alfred-kinsey-pedophilic-research-school-sex-ed\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adopted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by contemporary sex educators.
