A mother was in intense labor with her baby, and she was about three weeks before her expected due date.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fire and Rescue station dispatched a four-person team to respond to the call, including Firefighter Roberto Gnecchi-Ruscone. According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fire.nsw.gov.au\/incident.php?record=rec7ssVtmSi3itsBJ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by FRNSW, Gnecchi-Ruscone had completed a refresher course in pediatric assessment just three days prior, and was already trained in medical assistance as a first responder. \u201cRoberto (the CFR-trained member) and his firefighting colleagues embodied FRNSW\u2019s motto, &#8216;Prepared for Anything&#8217; and raced into action,\u201d the statement read. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For safety, Roberto also took advantage of a first responders\u2019 app where he could access the advice of dedicated paramedics live.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BUNDANOON | Firefighters help deliver premature baby in southern highlands hotel room. Within minutes of the firefighters\u2019 arrival, a baby girl, Deborah, was born. The firefighters gave Deborah to her mother, and the pair were assessed by the newly-arrived ambulance paramedics before being transported to the hospital.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to reports, both mother and baby are in good condition. FRNSW gave baby Deborah a teddy bear to remember the momentous, chaotic occasion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The heroic FRNSW hotel delivery comes as many parts of Australia are facing a shortage in maternity care, especially in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2023\/feb\/27\/maternity-crisis-pregnant-women-left-in-despair-as-facilities-disappear-in-regional-australia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rural parts of the country<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A shortfall of specialists, pressure on medical professionals and hospitals due to lingering effects of the\u00a0 COVID-19 pandemic, and shifting local demographics have all contributed to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-02-02\/geelong-epworth-maternity-ward-close-march-health-mothers\/101921540\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">closure of maternity wards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Where these wards have closed, hospitals have remained on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rkpg.health.wa.gov.au\/Our-services\/Maternity\/About-maternity-services-bypass\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bypass<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for months, redirecting women to other locations between one and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-02-17\/midwife-shortage-in-north-west-tasmania\/101970692\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lack of availability of care has resulted in more anecdotes of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-02-14\/maternity-services-shortage-chinchilla-leads-to-roadside-birth\/100817374#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">roadside births<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other unplanned, out-of-hospital deliveries similar to Deborah\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ged Kearney, Assistant Health Minister, told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-08-07\/abc-birth-project-uncovers-midwives-hospitals-under-pressure\/102619362\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ABC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the Australian government is looking at ways to remedy the staffing shortages. \u201cWe need to make sure there is a robust workforce \u2013 that enough people are going into midwifery, that they can have fulfilling careers and work to their full scope of practice,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The crisis in maternity care in Australia mirrors the debate about \u201cmaternity care deserts\u201d in less populous regions of the United States. The mainstream U.S. media has blamed these gaps in maternity care on pro-life laws in some states, as Live Action has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/maternity-care-suffering-rural-areas-not-laws\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but Australia\u2019s problems with maternity care take place in a country where abortion is legal and most states permit it up to 22 weeks.
