{"id":302640,"date":"2023-11-30T10:40:58","date_gmt":"2023-11-30T16:40:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=302640"},"modified":"2023-11-29T11:57:27","modified_gmt":"2023-11-29T17:57:27","slug":"google-removes-pregnancy-center-planned-parenthood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/google-removes-pregnancy-center-planned-parenthood\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Maps removes D.C. pregnancy center, suggests Planned Parenthood instead"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/11\/28\/google-maps-removed-dc-pregnancy-center-offered-planned-parenthood-instead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Daily Signal<\/a>) Google Maps removed directions to a Washington, D.C., pro-life pregnancy center and instead offered searchers options that included a local Planned Parenthood abortion clinic.<\/p>\n<p>Users who attempted to search for Capitol Hill Crisis Pregnancy Center on Monday via Google Maps (on either iPhone or desktop) found that Google Maps did not offer directions to the location. Instead, Google Maps suggested two different doula locations, a pro-life pregnancy center across the river in Maryland, and \u201cPlanned Parenthood \u2013 Carol Whitehill Moses Center,\u201d an abortion clinic.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Signal reached out to Google on Monday around 11 a.m. after confirming that Capitol Hill Crisis Pregnancy Center could not be found on Google Maps (though it could be found on Apple Maps). Shortly afterward, the pregnancy center\u2019s location became available on Google Maps.<\/p>\n<p>Google confirmed to The Daily Signal that the pregnancy center\u2019s location had, in fact, been removed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis listing was incorrectly removed and we have since reinstated it,\u201d a spokeswoman told The Daily Signal. \u201cWe use many sources to keep Maps updated, including feedback from our community, information from businesses, and imagery. When we find inaccuracies, we correct them as quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Capitol Hill Pregnancy Center clinic director Janet Durig told The Daily Signal on Tuesday afternoon that she would like to think this incident was an accident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut when you think of all the past things that have taken place affecting the Capitol Hill Pregnancy Center in a negative way,\u201d she said, \u201cI can\u2019t help but wonder if this was on purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HcBsjvfQA3k?si=3IsjTaXUNhvNICOg\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt comes back to totally misunderstanding the extensive services that we offer women in crisis pregnancies,\u201d she added. \u201cThe fact that, yes, we offer pregnancy testing and we offer options, education, but we also go way beyond this with walking with them for months, if not sometimes years, and helping them with their child with material resources, emotional resources, and spiritual support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Google has repeatedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2021\/11\/30\/gop-lawmakers-demand-google-stop-censoring-pro-life-ads-live-action-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">been accused<\/a> of suppressing or censoring pro-life viewpoints and content. YouTube, which is owned by Google, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?app=desktop&amp;v=HOEfhwX5J0g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">automatically flags<\/a> all abortion-related content with the description: \u201cAn abortion is a procedure to end a pregnancy. It uses medicine or surgery to remove the embryo or fetus and placenta from the uterus. The procedure is done by a licensed healthcare professional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Capitol Hill Pregnancy Center has also been the focus of attacks and vandalism in the wake of the leak of the draft opinion indicating that Roe v. Wade would soon be overturned.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2022, shortly before the overturn of Roe, a vandal or vandals dumped a bucket of red paint on the pregnancy center, spray-painted the words \u201cJane\u2019s Revenge\u201d on the wall of the center, and egged the windows.<\/p>\n<p>The pro-life pregnancy center is about a four-minute drive from the Supreme Court and offers baby clothing, baby food, and other resources to needy D.C.-area parents who come to the center hoping they can find help rather than resort to abortion.<\/p>\n<p>Durig, the clinic\u2019s director, shared with The Daily Signal in October 2022 that the Metropolitan Police Department had increased its presence around the center due to the vandalism. Though the center itself had increased security measures, she said at the time, there had still been several incidents involving a male beating on the center\u2019s windows that had made her feel very uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2022\/12\/02\/far-left-protesters-disrupt-pro-life-banquet-for-dc-pregnancy-center-attacked-by-vandals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Daily Signal also learned in October<\/a> 2022 that D.C. police had suspended their investigation into the June 2022 vandalism pending further evidence. D.C. police confirmed in early August 2023 that investigation is still suspended pending further evidence\u2014in other words, the vandal or vandals haven\u2019t been found, and it is unlikely anyone is looking for them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe police have had our safety at heart,\u201d Durig told The Daily Signal in August. \u201cThey inform us if they hear or know of events that might create problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the first anniversary of the June 2022 Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade, she said, \u201ctwo police cars sat outside our building. Last year, the D.C. police department placed QR codes in our windows. These monitor how often patrol cars pass the building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are grateful for the officers and all they do to protect us,\u201d she added, noting that her center hasn\u2019t come under any kind of attacks since far-left protesters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2022\/12\/02\/far-left-protesters-disrupt-pro-life-banquet-for-dc-pregnancy-center-attacked-by-vandals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interrupted the center\u2019s banquet<\/a> in December 2022.
