{"id":302531,"date":"2023-11-30T12:44:43","date_gmt":"2023-11-30T18:44:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=302531"},"modified":"2023-11-29T12:28:40","modified_gmt":"2023-11-29T18:28:40","slug":"irish-government-millions-promoting-abortion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/irish-government-millions-promoting-abortion\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish government spends tens of millions promoting abortion&#8230; and zero toward alternatives"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/irish-gov-spends-e46m-on-abortion-provision-and-nothing-on-abortion-alternatives\">Right to Life UK<\/a>) The Irish Government has spent \u20ac46 million [more than $50M USD] on the provision of abortion since it was made legal in Ireland \u201cand not a single cent on promoting alternatives to abortion\u201d, according to research by the Pro Life Campaign (PLC) in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>Based on responses to a series of parliamentary questions submitted by TDs (the Irish equivalent of an MP), the PLC calculated that the Irish Government spent \u20ac46 million of taxpayers\u2019 money on the provision of abortion over the last four and half years.<\/p>\n<p>Eil\u00eds Mulroy, spokesperson for the PLC, described this spending as \u201cobscene\u201d and \u201ca scandal of monumental proportions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>From the number of reimbursement payments made to doctors for carrying out abortions, the PLC has determined that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/prolifecampaign.ie\/portfolio_cpt\/25-05-2023-breaking-new-hse-data-suggests-there-were-8876-abortions-in-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">8,876<\/a>\u00a0abortions took place in 2022. There were approximately\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.ie\/irish-news\/around-6700-abortions-in-ireland-last-year-as-minister-for-health-warns-over-low-level-of-reporting-by-medics\/41838081.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">6,700<\/a>\u00a0abortions in Ireland the previous year and it is expected that the number will be even higher for 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Mulroy went on to say \u201cIt\u2019s not just \u2018No\u2019 voters in the 2018 referendum who will be troubled to hear about the amount of taxpayers\u2019 money being spent on abortion. Many of the \u2018Yes\u2019 voters who were promised by the Taoiseach that abortion would be \u201crare\u201d if repeal happened will also be dismayed when they realise what has transpired\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Pro Life Campaign have committed themselves to making this a major election issue and want to ensure to the D\u00e1il (the Irish Parliament) has many more pro-life TDs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCreating awareness about the importance of \u2018thinking pro-life\u2019 before voting is going to be our main focus between now and the next election\u201d, Mulroy added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zVk1qM1El9o?si=j5mWgtaTLBiuwmSs\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>A sharp increase in abortions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/irish-abortion-review-recommends-doctors-be-immune-from-prosecution-for-abortion-up-to-birth\">highly controversial review<\/a>\u00a0of Ireland\u2019s abortion law earlier this year recommended physicians who perform abortions be immune from prosecution if they perform an abortion at any stage of pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>The review also recommended the scrapping of the three-day waiting period before an abortion can happen.<\/p>\n<p>This is despite the fact that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/prolifecampaign.ie\/portfolio_cpt\/14-9-23-latest-hse-data-shows-1903-women-didnt-proceed-from-first-to-final-abortion-appointment-in-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1,903<\/a>\u00a0women in Ireland did not proceed with an abortion after an initial abortion appointment and a mandatory three-day waiting period in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Right To Life UK spokesperson Catherine Robinson said \u201cSadly a pro-abortion mindset seems to have completely taken hold of the Irish Government.
