{"id":302350,"date":"2023-12-03T11:37:28","date_gmt":"2023-12-03T17:37:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=302350"},"modified":"2023-12-01T14:37:44","modified_gmt":"2023-12-01T20:37:44","slug":"cdc-report-unmarried-women-20s-most-abortions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-report-unmarried-women-20s-most-abortions\/","title":{"rendered":"CDC report: Unmarried women and women in their 20s have most abortions"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Newly released data published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/ss7209a1.htm?s_cid=ss7209a1_w\">2021<\/a> reveals that unmarried women, those in their 20s, and women who have experienced a previous &#8216;live birth&#8217; but never had a prior abortion, were among those who obtained the majority of abortions.<\/p>\n<p>In their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/pdfs\/ss7209a1-H.pdf\">report<\/a> dated November 24, 2023, the CDC recorded 625,978 total abortions reported nationally from 48 reporting areas. CDC abortion data is voluntarily gathered from states that require reporting. The most current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/ss7209a1.htm?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion report<\/a>\u00a0published by the CDC\u00a0is for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/pdfs\/ss7209a1-H.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>,\u00a0but not all states collect data on the characteristics of abortion clients.<\/p>\n<p>While much of this report is based on 2021 data from the CDC, Live Action News included older characteristic data published by the Guttmacher Institute, which has not updated this specific data since <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/data-having-abortions-surprise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>The data is summarized below: *Guttmacher (2014) and the ^CDC (2021)<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most are unmarried women: (45.9%*\/87.3%^)<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most are women in their 20&#8217;s: (60%*\/57%^)<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most abortion clients have had a previous live birth: (59%*\/60.7%^)<\/li>\n<li>Most never had a previous abortion: (57.3%^)<\/li>\n<li>Teens obtained greater percentage of abortions at or after 14 weeks: (30%^)<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most had a low income: (75%*)<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most had at least a high school education: (91%*)<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most paid for their abortions out-of-pocket (53%*)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Unmarried women have most abortions\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>According to the CDC, 462,355 abortions were recorded among <em>37 reporting areas<\/em> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/ss7209a1.htm?s_cid=ss7209a1_w#T7_down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">marital status<\/a> in 2021, revealing that the majority of abortions are, consistent with past reporting, still committed on unmarried women.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, just <em><strong>12.7%<\/strong><\/em> of women who obtained an abortion were married, while <em><strong>87.3%<\/strong><\/em> were unmarried. And while married women saw an abortion ratio of 41 abortions per 1,000 live births, single unmarried women committed <em>404 abortions per 1,000 live births<\/em>, the CDC report stated.<\/p>\n<p>Older abortion data\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ajph.aphapublications.org\/doi\/10.2105\/AJPH.2017.304042\">compiled<\/a> by Guttmacher* for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ajph.aphapublications.org\/doi\/10.2105\/AJPH.2017.304042\">2014<\/a> found that never-married women accounted for the largest proportion of abortions (45.9%) and had an abortion rate of 16.9 per 1000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen cohabiting with but not married to their partners had the highest abortion rate: 31.0 per 1000. Between 2008 and 2014, declines in abortion were most pronounced for cohabitating women (39%) and lowest for married women (21%), although the latter group had a low abortion rate in both periods,\u201d Guttmacher* previously noted.<\/p>\n<p>The data suggests that the sanctity of marriage is a protectant to both the pregnant mother and her preborn baby. It indicates that when men are supportive of the women whom they impregnate, the outcome can have life-saving effects on the unborn child. And, when society promotes abortion as a safety net, which frees men of all their responsibility, babies are left vulnerable to the violence of the predatory abortion industry.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Women in 20s comprised over half of abortions\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>In the CDC data, 612,407 abortions were reported among <em>48 reporting areas <\/em>by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/ss7209a1.htm?s_cid=ss7209a1_w#T3_down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">known age group<\/a> in 2021, revealing that women in their 20s accounted for the majority of abortions (more than half of abortions (57.0%). Likewise, women in their 30&#8217;s accounted for nearly 31% of abortions.<\/p>\n<p>Women aged 20-24 and 25-29 also saw the highest abortion rates (19.7 and 19.4 per 1,000 women aged 20\u201324 and 25\u201329 years, respectively), the report claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Those under 15 years of age and those at or over age 40 accounted for the lowest percentage of abortions (0.2% and 3.6%, respectively) and had the lowest abortion rates (0.4 and 2.5 abortions per 1,000 women aged &lt;15 and \u226540 years, respectively). However, abortion ratios were highest among adolescents at or under the age of 19. Girls under age 15 had 805 abortions per 1,000 live births and there were 381 abortions per 1,000 live births among those aged 15\u201319 years.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_302353\" style=\"width: 523px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-302353\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-302353 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Abortion-reported-by-agre-group-2021-from-CDC.jpg\" alt=\"Abortion reported by age group shows majority of abortions obtained by women in their 20's (2021\/CDC )\" width=\"513\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Abortion-reported-by-agre-group-2021-from-CDC.jpg 513w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Abortion-reported-by-agre-group-2021-from-CDC-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Abortion-reported-by-agre-group-2021-from-CDC-500x329.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 513px) 100vw, 513px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-302353\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abortion reported by age group shows majority of abortions obtained by women in their 20&#8217;s (2021\/CDC )<\/p><\/div>\n<p>CDC data seems to line up with <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-20s-60-percent-abortions-united-states\/\">previous abortion data<\/a>\u00a0from the Guttmacher Institute* which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/report_pdf\/characteristics-us-abortion-patients-2014.pdf\">reported<\/a>\u00a0that in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/report_pdf\/characteristics-us-abortion-patients-2014.pdf\">2014<\/a>, more than half of all U.S. abortion patients \u2014 60% \u2014 were in their 20s, while 25% were in their 30s.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Most abortions o<\/strong>btained by mother with a previous live birth<\/h4>\n<p>In 2021, 507,685 abortions were recorded from <em>42 reporting areas <\/em>for women who had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/ss7209a1.htm?s_cid=ss7209a1_w#T8_down\">previous live births<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Women who had a previous live birth (60.7%) outpaced women who had never experienced a live birth (39.3%). Again, findings from the CDC resembled previously reported Guttmacher* <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/report\/characteristics-us-abortion-patients-2014\">data<\/a> for 2014, which <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-20s-60-percent-abortions-united-states\/\">indicated<\/a>\u00a0that 59% of women obtaining abortions had previously had a live birth.<\/p>\n<p>But while this number suggests that a majority of those who have abortions are already mothers, a <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/23333928211034993\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021 study<\/a> which reviewed a much larger sample size of low-income women, concluded that it <i>wasn&#8217;t<\/i> common for mothers with living children to abort subsequent children. That study, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-5-million-abortion-uncommon-moms-children\/\">previously<\/a> documented by Live Action News, analyzed a population size approximately <em>583 times<\/em> <em>larger <\/em>(4,884,101) than the sample used in 2014 by Guttmacher* (8,380) and <em>9 times larger<\/em> than what was reported by CDC in 2021 (507,685).<\/p>\n<p>The authors then concluded, &#8220;Abortion among low-income women with children is exceedingly uncommon, if not rare. The period prevalence of mothers without abortion is 13 times that of mothers with abortion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Read more about the study <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-5-million-abortion-uncommon-moms-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Most abortion clients had no prior abortions<\/h4>\n<p>In 2021, 508,578 abortions were recorded from <em>42 reporting areas<\/em> for women who had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/ss7209a1.htm?s_cid=ss7209a1_w#T9_down\">previous induced abortions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of abortions in this category were from women who had no prior abortion, nearly 60% of women (57.3%) reported never having had a previous abortion in 2021, while 42.7% previously had at least one abortion.<\/p>\n<p>A 2020 study\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/2333392820941348\">published<\/a>\u00a0in the Journal of\u00a0Health Services Research and Managerial Epidemiology\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/researchers-aborting-first-child-future-pregnancies\/\">found<\/a>\u00a0that aborting a first child makes a woman\u00a0<em>more likely to abort<\/em>\u00a0in future pregnancies.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_302364\" style=\"width: 858px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-302364\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-302364\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Women-with-previous-live-birth-or-induced-abortion-CDC-2021.jpg\" alt=\"Percent of women with previous live birth or induced abortion CDC 2021\" width=\"848\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Women-with-previous-live-birth-or-induced-abortion-CDC-2021.jpg 848w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Women-with-previous-live-birth-or-induced-abortion-CDC-2021-300x85.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Women-with-previous-live-birth-or-induced-abortion-CDC-2021-700x197.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Women-with-previous-live-birth-or-induced-abortion-CDC-2021-768x216.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Women-with-previous-live-birth-or-induced-abortion-CDC-2021-500x141.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 848px) 100vw, 848px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-302364\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Percent of women with previous live birth or induced abortion CDC 2021<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><strong>Black women have a disproportionately larger abortion percentage, rate, and ratio<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>In 2021, 394,757 abortions from\u00a0<em>33 reporting areas<\/em>\u00a0were recorded for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/ss7209a1.htm?s_cid=ss7209a1_w#T6_down\">race and ethnicity<\/a>. The data revealed that most abortions are committed on communities of color, including Black and Hispanic women.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, CDC reported that &#8220;non-Hispanic White (White) women and non-Hispanic Black (Black) women accounted for the highest percentages of all abortions (30.2% and 41.5%, respectively), and Hispanic women and non-Hispanic women in the other race category accounted for lower percentages (21.8% and 6.5%, respectively),&#8221; the CDC wrote.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, while white Americans made up 58.2% of people living in the United States in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/distribution-by-raceethnicity\/?currentTimeframe=1&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>, they accounted for 30.2% of abortions in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/pdfs\/ss7209a1-H.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021.<\/a> Likewise, while Black Americans made up 11.6% of people living in the United States in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/distribution-by-raceethnicity\/?currentTimeframe=1&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>, they accounted for a disproportionately higher percentage of abortions (41.5%) in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/pdfs\/ss7209a1-H.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>. In addition, while\u00a0Hispanic Americans made up 19% of people living in the United States in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/distribution-by-raceethnicity\/?currentTimeframe=1&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>, they also accounted for a higher percentage (21.8%) of abortions in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/pdfs\/ss7209a1-H.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tragically, Black women saw the highest rate and ratio of abortions. According to the CDC, &#8220;White women had the lowest abortion rate (6.4 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15\u201344 years) and ratio (116 abortions per 1,000 live births), and Black women had the highest abortion rate (28.6 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15\u201344 years) and ratio (498 abortions per 1,000 live births).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The data revealed that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Black abortion rate was\u00a0<em><strong>nearly 5 times higher<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0than the white abortion rate (28.6 v 6.4) and over\u00a0<em><strong>twice as high<\/strong><\/em> as the Hispanic abortion rate (28.6 v 12.3). The Black abortion ratio was\u00a0<strong><em>over 4 times higher<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0than the white abortion ratio (498 v. 116) and\u00a0<em><strong>3.5 times higher<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0than the Hispanic abortion ratio (498 v. 186).<\/li>\n<li>The Hispanic abortion rate was\u00a0<em><strong>nearly twice as high<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0as the white abortion rate (12.3 v. 6.4) and the Hispanic abortion ratio was\u00a0<em><strong>over 1.5 times higher<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>than the white abortion ratio (186 v. 116).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Abortion is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/washpo-dishonestly-downplay-abortion-eugenics-ties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tethered to eugenics<\/a>, and communities of color continue to be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/reproductive-injustice-eliminating-minorities-poor-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">targeted<\/a> for eugenic abortions. A more detailed breakdown of the data on abortions by race\/ethnicity can be found at Live Action News <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-black-hispanic-increased-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>White or Asian women more likely to use chemical abortion, especially at early gestations<\/h4>\n<p>A cross-sectional survey of people obtaining abortions at a sample of 56 U.S. facilities between June 2021 and July 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.contraceptionjournal.org\/article\/S0010-7824(23)00231-7\/fulltext#%20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> at the pro-abortion journal Contraception and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/news-release\/2023\/people-living-low-incomes-and-individuals-who-identify-black-are-among-those-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analyzed<\/a> by Guttmacher, found that the majority of chemical abortions were obtained by Asian (69%) or White (65%) clients who had no prior abortions (62%) with incomes at or above 100% the federal poverty level (60%\u201361%).<\/p>\n<p>Black women obtained the lowest amount (48%) of chemical abortions, that study concluded.<\/p>\n<p>However, the CDC&#8217;s latest report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/ss7209a1.htm?s_cid=ss7209a1_w#T13_down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed<\/a> that out of the <em>31 reporting areas<\/em> which reported by method type and race\/ethnicity in 2021, Black women obtained a larger total of so-called &#8220;medication&#8221; abortion overall.<\/p>\n<p>However, when broken down by gestational weeks, white and Hispanic women outpaced Black women in very early (at or less than six weeks) chemical abortions, while Black women had slightly higher percentages of abortion pill use between 7 and 13 weeks.
