{"id":302311,"date":"2023-11-29T14:36:17","date_gmt":"2023-11-29T20:36:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=302311"},"modified":"2023-11-29T12:28:24","modified_gmt":"2023-11-29T18:28:24","slug":"abortion-black-hispanic-increased-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-black-hispanic-increased-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Abortions among Black and Hispanic populations increased in 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Abortion among communities of color increased in 2021, according to recently published abortion data <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-data-cdc-increase-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released<\/a> by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Black women saw the highest abortion percentage, rate, and ratio that same year.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent report, dated November 24, 2023, documented a total of 625,978 abortions reported to the CDC from 48 reporting areas in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/ss7209a1.htm?s_cid=ss7209a1_w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>. Out of those, just 394,757 abortions from <em>33 areas<\/em> were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/ss7209a1.htm?s_cid=ss7209a1_w#T6_down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> by race or ethnicity for 2021. The data excluded critical abortions out of &#8220;19 reporting areas (California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York State, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Washington, and Wisconsin) that did not report, did not report by race and ethnicity, or did not meet reporting standards,&#8221; the CDC claimed.<\/p>\n<p>There are no federal mandates to report all abortions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abortion Disproportionately Impacts Communities of Color<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Population data <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/distribution-by-raceethnicity\/?currentTimeframe=1&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> by KFF (Kaiser) indicates that abortion disproportionately impacts communities of color, specifically Black and Hispanic populations.<\/p>\n<p>According to the CDC, in 2021 &#8220;non-Hispanic White (White) women and non-Hispanic Black (Black) women accounted for the highest percentages of all abortions (30.2% and 41.5%, respectively), and Hispanic women and non-Hispanic women in the other race category accounted for lower percentages (21.8% and 6.5%, respectively).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The data also showed that Black women accounted for a disproportionately larger percentage, rate, and ratio of abortions.<\/p>\n<p>The abortion percentage among white women <em>decreased<\/em> (32.7% in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-report-unmarried-women-9-times-abort\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020<\/a> v. 30.2% in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/pdfs\/ss7209a1-H.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021)<\/a> as did those in the &#8220;other&#8221; group category (7% in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-report-unmarried-women-9-times-abort\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020<\/a> to 6.5% by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/pdfs\/ss7209a1-H.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the abortion percentage <em>increased<\/em> nearly six percent (5.86%) among Black women (39.2% in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-report-communities-color-impacted-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020<\/a> v. 41.5% in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/pdfs\/ss7209a1-H.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021)<\/a>. Likewise, Hispanic women also saw an abortion percentage <em>increase<\/em> of over three percent (3.3%) in 2021, (21.7% in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-report-communities-color-impacted-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020<\/a> v. 21.8% in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/pdfs\/ss7209a1-H.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abortion Estimates (Race\/Ethnicity)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The CDC&#8217;s reported data for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/ss7209a1.htm?s_cid=ss7209a1_w#T6_down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">race and ethnicity<\/a> totaled 394,757 abortions in 2021 from only 3<em>3 reporting areas.\u00a0<\/em>Total abortion <em>estimates<\/em> by race\/ethnicity were calculated by multiplying 2021 abortion percentages with the <em>total<\/em> number of abortions (<em>625,978)<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>White Americans made up 58.2% of people living in the United States in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/distribution-by-raceethnicity\/?currentTimeframe=1&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>, but accounted for 30.2% of abortions in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/pdfs\/ss7209a1-H.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021,<\/a> for an estimated 189,045 total abortions.<\/li>\n<li>Black Americans made up 11.6% of people living in the United States in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/distribution-by-raceethnicity\/?currentTimeframe=1&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>, but accounted for 41.5% of abortions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/pdfs\/ss7209a1-H.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021,<\/a> for an estimated 259,781 total abortions.<\/li>\n<li>Hispanic Americans made up 19% of people living in the United States in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/distribution-by-raceethnicity\/?currentTimeframe=1&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>, but accounted for 21.8% of abortions in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/pdfs\/ss7209a1-H.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>, for an estimated 136,463 total abortions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_302441\" style=\"width: 1211px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-302441\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-302441\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Abortion-data-on-race-ethnicity-population-among-Communities-of-Color-for-2021.jpg\" alt=\"Abortion data on race, ethnicity, population among Communities of Color for 2021, CDC\" width=\"1201\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Abortion-data-on-race-ethnicity-population-among-Communities-of-Color-for-2021.jpg 1201w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Abortion-data-on-race-ethnicity-population-among-Communities-of-Color-for-2021-300x47.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Abortion-data-on-race-ethnicity-population-among-Communities-of-Color-for-2021-700x110.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Abortion-data-on-race-ethnicity-population-among-Communities-of-Color-for-2021-768x121.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Abortion-data-on-race-ethnicity-population-among-Communities-of-Color-for-2021-500x79.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1201px) 100vw, 1201px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-302441\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abortion data on race, ethnicity, population among Communities of Color for 2021, CDC<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The data shows that between <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-report-unmarried-women-9-times-abort\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020<\/a> and 2021, <em>estimated<\/em> total abortions for white women decreased nearly seven percent (6.8%) from 202,847 in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-report-unmarried-women-9-times-abort\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020<\/a> to 189,045 in 2021. But that completely flipped among the Black population, which saw <em>estimated<\/em> total abortions increase by nearly seven percent (6.8%) \u2014 from 243,168 in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-report-unmarried-women-9-times-abort\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020<\/a> to 259,781 in 2021. Likewise, <em>estimated<\/em> total abortions for Hispanic women also increased by 4.25%, from 130,889 in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-report-unmarried-women-9-times-abort\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020<\/a> to 136,463 in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The Guttmacher Institute&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/factsheet\/fb_induced_abortion.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/2023\/01\/inequity-us-abortion-rights-and-access-end-roe-deepening-existing-divides\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a> on race also showed a disproportionate impact as well. However, a more limited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/guttmacher-releases-a-new-survey-of-abortion-patients\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/news-release\/2023\/national-study-provides-baseline-data-experiences-people-seeking-abortion-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> by Guttmacher in April of 2023, which looked at the demographics of abortion clients in states which have more protections for preborn children versus states that do not.<\/p>\n<p>Between June 2021 and July 2022, Guttmacher obtained data from 5,930 women who had had abortions, according to Dr. Michael New at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/guttmacher-releases-a-new-survey-of-abortion-patients\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Review<\/a>, who confirmed that even among that limited sample size, &#8220;an increasing percentage of abortions are performed on both African-American women and Hispanic women.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abortion Rate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;White women had the lowest abortion <em>rate<\/em> (6.4 <strong>abortions per 1,000 women aged 15\u201344 years<\/strong>) and <em>ratio<\/em> (116 <strong>abortions per 1,000 live births<\/strong>), and Black women had the highest abortion rate (28.6 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15\u201344 years) and ratio (498 abortions per 1,000 live births),&#8221; the CDC wrote (emphasis added).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_302418\" style=\"width: 835px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-302418\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-302418\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Abortion-data-by-race-and-ethnicity-CDC-2010-2021-to-2021-updated.jpg\" alt=\"Communities of color: abortion data by race and ethnicity CDC 2010-2021 \" width=\"825\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Abortion-data-by-race-and-ethnicity-CDC-2010-2021-to-2021-updated.jpg 825w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Abortion-data-by-race-and-ethnicity-CDC-2010-2021-to-2021-updated-300x144.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Abortion-data-by-race-and-ethnicity-CDC-2010-2021-to-2021-updated-700x336.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Abortion-data-by-race-and-ethnicity-CDC-2010-2021-to-2021-updated-768x369.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Abortion-data-by-race-and-ethnicity-CDC-2010-2021-to-2021-updated-500x240.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 825px) 100vw, 825px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-302418\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Communities of color: abortion data by race and ethnicity CDC 2010-2021<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Breaking this down further, we found that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Black abortion rate was <em><strong>nearly 5 times higher<\/strong><\/em> than the white abortion rate (28.6 v 6.4) and over <em><strong>twice as high<\/strong><\/em> as the Hispanic abortion rate (28.6 v 12.3).\u00a0 The Black abortion ratio was <strong><em>over 4 times higher<\/em><\/strong> than the white abortion ratio (498 v. 116) and <em><strong>3.5 times higher<\/strong><\/em> than the Hispanic abortion ratio (498 v. 186).<\/li>\n<li>The Hispanic abortion rate was <em><strong>nearly twice as high<\/strong><\/em> as the white abortion rate (12.3 v. 6.4) and the Hispanic abortion ratio was <em><strong>over 1.5 times higher<\/strong> <\/em>than the white abortion ratio (186 v. 116).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are an <em>estimated<\/em> 518 white babies killed by abortion every day (189,045\/365); nearly 12 white babies will die by abortion <em>for every 100 live births<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Among the Black community, there are an <em>estimated<\/em> 712 Black babies (259,781\/365) killed by abortion every day. And, tragically, 50 Black babies will die by abortion <em>for every 100 live births. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>In addition, there are an <em>estimated<\/em> 374 Hispanic babies (136,463\/365) killed by abortion every day. But sadly, <em>for every 100 live births, <\/em>nearly 19 Hispanic babies will die by abortion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Births v. Abortion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/nvsr\/nvsr72\/nvsr72-01.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>, 3,664,292 total births were registered in the United States. Out of those, CDC&#8217;s National Vital Statistics system <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/nvss\/births.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recorded<\/a> 1,887,656 white births (9.7% birth rate), 517,889 Black births (12.5% birth rate), and 885,916 (14.1% birth rate). Birth rates are births per 1,000 population in each specified group.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, the Black abortion rate was twice as high as the Black birth rate (28.6% v. 12.5%). According to the data, while the Black population saw a 12.5% birth rate (births per 1,000 population in specified group) in 2021, they saw whopping 28.6% abortion rate (abortions per 1,000 women aged 15\u201344 years) that same year. And the CDC report tragically claimed there were 498 abortions per 1,000 live births that same year.<\/p>\n<p>While nationally the trend is going in the wrong direction, in places like New York City, there appears to be some good news now that Black births have outpaced Black abortions for the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-york-pregnancy-centers-4-million-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">past several years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Previous to and including the year 2016, the data had shown that more babies were aborted in New York City (NYC) than had been born. However, in 2017 that trend slowly began to reverse, and continues in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/doh\/downloads\/pdf\/vs\/2020sum.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020,<\/a> the latest year recorded, where New York City documented 18,162 Black births and 14,043 abortions of Black babies that same year.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_302466\" style=\"width: 423px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-302466\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-302466\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/NYC-abortion-stats-Live-births-v-abortions-for-Black-women-2000-to-2020.jpg\" alt=\"NYC abortion stats Live births v abortions for Black women 2000 to 2020\" width=\"413\" height=\"601\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/NYC-abortion-stats-Live-births-v-abortions-for-Black-women-2000-to-2020.jpg 413w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/NYC-abortion-stats-Live-births-v-abortions-for-Black-women-2000-to-2020-206x300.jpg 206w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 413px) 100vw, 413px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-302466\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NYC abortion stats Live births v abortions for Black women 2000 to 2020 (Graph: LIve Action News)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Abortion Compared to Leading Causes of Death, by Race\/Ethnicity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Leading causes of death data has not been published for 2020 or 2021. However, using data for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/nvsr\/nvsr70\/nvsr70-09-508.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019<\/a>, we discover that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Black abortions (estimated at 259,781) in 2021 outnumbered the <strong>top\u00a0nine leading causes<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>of\u00a0<\/strong><strong>death<\/strong> (257,750) for Black Americans in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/nvsr\/nvsr70\/nvsr70-09-508.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019<\/a> combined (2021 cause of death data is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/nvss\/leading-causes-of-death.htm#publications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not yet<\/a>\u00a0available).\u00a0Black abortion numbers (<em>estimated<\/em>) were over 26 times greater than homicides committed on Black Americans (259,781 v. 9,951) in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/nvsr\/nvsr70\/nvsr70-09-508.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Hispanic abortions (estimated at 136,463) in 2021 nearly outnumbered the <strong>top seven leading causes<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>of\u00a0<\/strong><strong>death<\/strong> (139,793) for Hispanic Americans in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/nvsr\/nvsr70\/nvsr70-09-508.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019<\/a> combined (2021 cause of death data is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/nvss\/leading-causes-of-death.htm#publications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not yet<\/a> available). Hispanic abortion numbers (<em>estimated<\/em>) were nearly 44 times greater than homicides committed on Hispanic Americans (136,463 v. 3,122) in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/nvsr\/nvsr70\/nvsr70-09-508.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_302469\" style=\"width: 542px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-302469\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-302469\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Leading-causes-of-death-2019-v.-Est.-abortion-communities-of-color-2021.jpg\" alt=\"Leading causes of death (2019) v. Est. abortion communities of color (2021) (Graph: Live Action News)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Abortion is Tethered to Eugenics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Abortion is <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/washpo-dishonestly-downplay-abortion-eugenics-ties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tethered to eugenics<\/a>, and communities of color continue to be <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/reproductive-injustice-eliminating-minorities-poor-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">targeted<\/a> for eugenic abortions. Advocates of abortion often <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/reproductive-injustice-eliminating-minorities-poor-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paint<\/a>\u00a0the killing of preborn minority children as a solution to poverty, or as a stepping stone out of a life of poverty. But the facts simply do not bear this out.\u00a0This eugenic philosophy of abortion has little to do with helping\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/taxpayer-funded-abortion-hyde-poor-abortion-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">communities of color<\/a>\u00a0and instead serves only to\u00a0<em>eliminate<\/em> them.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.plannedparenthood.org\/uploads\/filer_public\/6d\/77\/6d775c96-9afd-41ec-a3c8-ce56a799a6be\/230509-irreplaceable-role-factsheet-p01.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>, nearly half of eugenics-founded Planned Parenthood&#8217;s 2.1 million clients were people of color, with more than 581,000 patients who identify as Latino and more than 360,000 patients who identify as Black.
