{"id":301392,"date":"2023-11-09T14:45:10","date_gmt":"2023-11-09T20:45:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=301392"},"modified":"2023-11-08T22:27:13","modified_gmt":"2023-11-09T04:27:13","slug":"study-pro-life-states-babies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-pro-life-states-babies\/","title":{"rendered":"Study claims women in pro-life states are worse off because more babies are being born"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demography<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published a new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/read.dukeupress.edu\/demography\/article\/60\/5\/1469\/382016\/State-Level-Abortion-Policy-Hostility-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on September 8th that purports to show that women in states with pro-life laws are worse off&#8230; because they\u2019re having more babies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2023\/11\/stricter-abortion-laws-linked-increase-unintended-births\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cornell Chronicle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article discussing the new study claimed that women in states with pro-life laws \u201cwere 13% more likely to have a live birth resulting from an unintended pregnancy than those in states where abortion care was more accessible.\u201d For the authors of the study, more babies being born represents a failure, a net negative, and provides a glimpse into the bias behind the research.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study found an association between \u201cabortion hostility\u201d in a locale, defined as \u201cstate-level restrictive abortion policies and the subsequent hostile environment toward abortion they create,\u201d and \u201cunintended\u201d live births. These \u201cunintended\u201d births were measured by a question asking women whether they had intended to get pregnant prior to finding out they were pregnant. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One possible answer, \u201cI wanted to be pregnant later,\u201d was grouped with women who <em>never<\/em> wanted to be pregnant, inflating on paper the number of women who might have gotten abortions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/doctor-sperm-fertility-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Doctor used his own sperm to impregnate fertility patient: \u2018I felt like a science experiment\u2019<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study goes on to say that the women most affected by \u201cabortion hostility\u201d are women of lower socioeconomic means, and teenagers. \u201cHigher state-level policy hostility toward abortion was most strongly associated with live birth resulting from unintended pregnancy for younger women, women with lower levels of educational attainment,\u201d and that the increased birth rate \u201camong women aged 19 or younger was almost three times that of the average woman in the sample.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, there were women who felt they could not financially support a baby, and teenagers who also might have chosen an abortion that instead had their babies. The implication is that lack of financial, medical, educational, or other support is a justification for abortion, and takes the births of these babies as a net negative, a life-ruining event for many women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The infamous &#8220;Turnaway Study&#8221; authored by Diana Greene Foster \u2014 which has <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/turnaway-study-takedown-video-debunks-denied-abortion\/\">many significant problems<\/a> \u2014 also attempted to prove that women who cannot get abortions are worse off. That study purported that <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women who had less support from family and friends were more likely to wish they had had an abortion. It also found that among women who could not get abortions, five years later <em>96% of women no longer wished they could have had an abortion<\/em>, and the economic disparity between women who got or did not get an abortion had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ajph.aphapublications.org\/doi\/10.2105\/AJPH.2017.304247\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diminished or disappeared altogether<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, these biased researchers assume that \u201cabortion is a human right,\u201d implying that all women are (or should be) in support of abortion. A pro-life legislative atmosphere in a state \u2013 described as \u201cabortion hostility\u201d \u2013 is therefore a failure of representative government rather than a reflection of the pro-life values of the population that includes women. The study then neglects the actual thoughts and feelings of the women they purport to study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But one thing co-author Sharon Sassler pointed out that pro-lifers can get behind is that, in some of the states that prevent abortions, more can be done to support the women that feel trapped by financial or other circumstances into seeking out abortion.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cProviding broader access to health insurance coverage, getting women prenatal care earlier on in their pregnancy, and extending insurance coverage for longer periods of time after they give birth is just one way of taking better care of women and children,\u201d Sassler said, according to the Chronicle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/stop-planned-parenthood\/?utm_campaign=sex_ed_petition&amp;utm_medium=LAN&amp;utm_source=website\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-295788 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Stop-PP-From-Sexualizing-Kids970x250-blur-700x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Stop-PP-From-Sexualizing-Kids970x250-blur-700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Stop-PP-From-Sexualizing-Kids970x250-blur-300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Stop-PP-From-Sexualizing-Kids970x250-blur-768x198.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Stop-PP-From-Sexualizing-Kids970x250-blur-500x129.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Stop-PP-From-Sexualizing-Kids970x250-blur.jpg 970w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The journal Demography published a new study on September 8th that purports to show that women in states with pro-life laws are worse off&#8230; because they\u2019re having more babies.
