Texas Public Radio recently published an <\/span>interview<\/span><\/a> with Alan Braid, an abortionist who once operated out of San Antonio, but moved to New Mexico after <\/span>Roe<\/span><\/i> was overturned last year. He claims \u201cthings were bad\u201d prior to <\/span>Roe<\/span><\/i>, and claims to remember treating women who eventually died from botched abortions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI remember distinctly a 16-year-old girl. She had [sic] someone had hacked her vagina with old rags and put a catheter in her uterus for her to abort, and she died of sepsis and organ failure,\u201d Braid <\/span>told<\/span><\/a> Texas Public Radio.<\/span><\/p>\n

Braid also <\/span>said<\/span><\/a> that \u201cthe memories of treating other failed attempts at illegal abortions in 1972 still haunt him, and he doesn\u2019t want to go back to that.\u201d He paints himself as a savior-figure, claiming he has a \u201cduty of care\u201d to commit abortions because women have \u201ca fundamental right to receive this care.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Setting aside the fact that <\/span>nobody<\/span><\/i> has a right to kill an innocent human being, and the fact that the Supreme Court has affirmed that such a right does not exist in this country, what credence should we give to Braid\u2019s statements?<\/span><\/p>\n

Although some women did die from botched abortions prior to <\/span>Roe<\/span><\/i>, the numbers often cited by abortion advocates are vastly <\/span>inflated<\/span><\/a>. Bernard Nathanson, founder of NARAL, openly <\/span>admitted<\/span><\/a> that the statistic of 5,000-10,000 deaths per year due to illegal abortions was completely fabricated in an attempt to persuade Americans to legalize abortion.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, the <\/span>majority<\/span><\/a> of illegal abortions committed prior to <\/span>Roe<\/span><\/i> were committed by doctors, as former Planned Parenthood medical director Mary S. Calderone <\/span>admitted<\/span><\/a>. There was no massive proliferation of \u201ccoat-hanger\u201d abortions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thirdly, a significant number of women have been seriously injured and have even <\/span>died<\/span><\/a> from <\/span>legal<\/span><\/i> abortions. In <\/span>1973<\/span><\/a>, the year <\/span>Roe<\/span><\/i> was decided, and for many years thereafter, more women died from legal abortions than from illegal ones.<\/span><\/p>\n
