{"id":300950,"date":"2023-11-02T06:44:38","date_gmt":"2023-11-02T11:44:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=300950"},"modified":"2023-11-05T20:27:13","modified_gmt":"2023-11-06T02:27:13","slug":"ohio-issue-1-abortion-any-reason","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ohio-issue-1-abortion-any-reason\/","title":{"rendered":"Ohio&#8217;s &#8216;Issue 1&#8217; amendment could allow abortion up to birth for any reason"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On November 7, Ohio will vote on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Ohio_Issue_1,_Right_to_Make_Reproductive_Decisions_Including_Abortion_Initiative_(2023)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Issue 1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which would enshrine abortion as a \u201cright\u201d within the state constitution. An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/ohio-issue-1-abortion-ballot-measures\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effort<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to increase the margin needed to amend the Ohio constitution to a supermajority of 60% of voters \u2013 which was, confusingly, also titled \u201cIssue 1\u201d and which would have made the pro-abortion amendment being voted on this November more difficult to pass \u2013 failed at the ballot box in August. Consequently, the proposed amendment can be enacted by a simple majority of the vote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Issue 1, if approved, would \u201cestablish a state constitutional right to \u2018make and carry out one\u2019s own reproductive decisions, including but not limited to\u2019 decisions about abortion \u2026 and allow the state to restrict abortion after fetal viability, except when \u2018necessary to protect the pregnant patient\u2019s life or health,\u2019\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Ohio_Issue_1,_Right_to_Make_Reproductive_Decisions_Including_Abortion_Initiative_(2023)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Ballotpedia.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although this sounds as if lawmakers could still restrict late abortions, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/seethelanguage.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">language<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Issue 1 is vague and somewhat deceptive.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In actuality, it is the abortionist who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/catholicaoc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/WhereDoesItSayThat_CCO_logo.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">determines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> whether the fetus is \u201cviable,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and they clearly have a financial incentive to make a negative determination.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s more, so-called \u201chealth\u201d exceptions have historically been broadly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/catholicaoc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/WhereDoesItSayThat_CCO_logo.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interpreted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to include emotional and psychological health. This opens the door to abortion at any gestational age \u201cif in the professional judgment of the pregnant patient&#8217;s treating physician it is necessary to protect <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the pregnant patient&#8217;s life or health,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which even includes her emotional well-being. The woman\u2019s \u201ctreating physician,\u201d again, would likely be the abortionist being paid to kill the preborn child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet another problem with the language of the initiative is its use of the term \u201cindividual\u201d rather than \u201cadult\u201d or \u201cwoman.\u201d Current Ohio law requires a parent or legal guardian to give <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/learn\/teens\/stds-birth-control-pregnancy\/parental-consent-and-notification-laws\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a minor to obtain an abortion. However, critics have warned that the initiative, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/catholicaoc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/WhereDoesItSayThat_CCO_logo.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that \u201cEvery individual has a right to make and carry out one\u2019s own reproductive decisions,\u201d could abolish Ohio\u2019s parental consent law and allow children to obtain abortions without consulting or notifying their legal guardians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, Issue 1\u2019s vague language could permit women and girls of any age to obtain abortions up to the moment of birth for virtually any reason in Ohio. Only six other states and the District of Columbia currently impose <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/05\/14\/abortion-state-laws-bans-roe-supreme-court\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no gestational limit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on abortion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>LATE ABORTIONS \u2013 DANGEROUS, UNNECESSARY, AND DISTURBINGLY COMMON<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Politicians and public figures often <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/former-white-house-press-secretary-late-abortions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claim<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that late abortions are exceedingly rare and almost never elective \u2013 that they are only committed for health reasons. However, neither of these claims is true.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/100k-children-aborted-after-first-trimester-year\/\">estimates<\/a> that about 108,000 preborn children are killed annually by abortions committed past the 13th week of pregnancy. Nearly 12,000 of those are committed at or after the 21st week of pregnancy, at which point a child may be able to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/21-weeks-premature-baby-survive\/\">survive<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outside the womb \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ellie-21-weeks-guests-state-of-union\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/premature-baby-celebrates-first-birthday\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/youngest-preemie-world-21-weeks-going-home\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is equivalent to almost 296 preborn children killed daily past the first trimester, and nearly 33 per day killed at or after the 21st week of gestation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/fact-sheet-reasons-for-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.5%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of all abortions are sought for fetal abnormalities or health-of-the-mother reasons. While this statistic applies to abortions committed at all gestational ages and not late abortions specifically, pro-abortion researchers have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ansirh.org\/research\/research\/why-do-women-decide-get-third-trimester-abortions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the reasons cited by women seeking late abortions do not differ significantly from those cited by women seeking abortions earlier in their pregnancies. The Guttmacher Institute has also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/secularprolife.org\/2016\/10\/no-most-late-term-abortions-are-not_13\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the vast majority of abortions committed after 13 weeks in pregnancy are purely elective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abortions committed past the first trimester have increased complication rates, and are significantly more dangerous for the women who seek them. Even abortionists who commit second- and third-trimester abortions have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortionist-curtis-boyd-late-term-abortion-risks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">openly<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortionists-second-trimester-abortion-higher-complications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">admitted<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this. A National Institutes of Health <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15051566\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that a woman\u2019s risk of death from abortion increased by 38% for each additional week of gestation past 8 weeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Late abortion procedures are also disturbingly barbaric. In the second trimester, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">procedure called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abortionprocedures.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dilation and evacuation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or D&amp;E, is the standard abortion practice. In this procedure, the abortionist rips the child apart and removes him or her, limb by limb, before crushing the child\u2019s skull.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the third trimester, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abortionprocedures.com\/induction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">induction abortion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the standard procedure. It generally requires 3-4 days to complete. In this procedure, the abortionist typically injects feticide, such as digoxin, into the preborn baby through the woman\u2019s abdomen or vagina \u2013 this kills the child. The woman\u2019s cervix is dilated over the course of the next few days, and at some point, she will deliver a highly developed, dead child. If feticide is not used, the child might be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/societyfp.org\/_documents\/resources\/InductionofFetalDemise.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">born alive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>CURRENT STATUS OF ABORTION IN OHIO<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Ohio passed a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ohio-court-declines-appeal-heartbeat-law\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which restricted abortions after a fetal heartbeat can be detected \u2013 approximately six weeks into pregnancy \u2013\u00a0 that law is currently enjoined by the courts. Consequently, abortion is currently legal in the state of Ohio until the 22nd week of pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By week 22, a preborn human being is at an advanced stage of development. Children at this age have highly sophisticated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ehd.org\/dev_article_unit14.php\">brains<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ehd.org\/dev_article_unit13.php\">glandular systems<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ehd.org\/dev_article_unit15.php\">gastrointestinal tracts<\/a>. They even have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ehd.org\/dev_article_unit14.php\">circadian rhythms<\/a> and experience <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ehd.org\/dev_article_unit15.php\">dreams<\/a>. Premature babies as young as <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/?s=21+weeks\">21 weeks<\/a> have been surviving outside the womb with increasing frequency as medical technology advances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are multiple Ohio facilities that openly commit abortions up to the 22-week limit, when the preborn child\u2019s development is quite advanced. Some of these facilities have horrific track records. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abortiondocs.org\/clinics\/preterm-cleveland\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preterm Cleveland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for example, has been responsible for injuring dozens of women, two of whom, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/autopsy-report-shows-womans-death-at-cleveland-abortion-clinic-was-probably-preventable\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lakisha Atkins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/woman-killed-botched-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tia Parks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> subsequently died from their injuries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/abortiondocs.org\/clinics\/womens-medical-center-dayton\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women\u2019s Med Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Dayton has a similarly lengthy record of patient injuries. It was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abortiondocs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/2019-Ohio-1146.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ordered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to close in 2019 by the Ohio Department of Health, but remains open nonetheless. This facility was founded by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abortiondocs.org\/abortionists\/william-mudd-martin-haskell\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Martin Haskell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/abortiondocs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/inventionclaimletter.jpg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the now <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/108th-congress\/senate-bill\/3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">federally prohibited<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dilation and extraction abortion <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/partial-birth-abortion-horror-revisited-nurse-tells-grisly-tale-of-the-procedure\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">method<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 otherwise known as D&amp;X or partial birth abortion \u2013 in which a living preborn child is partially delivered before the abortionist fatally punctures the child\u2019s skull. Martin Haskell is an alleged <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xamy6MhApQs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">financial backer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supporting the effort to pass Issue 1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>CONCLUSION<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, Michigan voters passed Proposition 3, which amended that state\u2019s constitution to include a so-called right to \u201creproductive freedom.\u201d On October 19, the Michigan State Senate <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passed a package of legislation aimed at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/michigan-senate-passes-expansive-pro-abortion-package\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">repealing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> existing common-sense state abortion-related protections, including the requirements for written consent from the mother and a 24-hour waiting period. Licensing regulations for abortion facilities as well as a rule preventing publicly funded colleges and universities from referring for abortions would also be repealed if the legislation passes in the Michigan House. Governor Whitmer has already indicated that she will sign the package into law if it reaches her desk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ohioans should take note of developments in Michigan, as the passage of Issue 1 would undoubtedly have similar effects in Ohio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At a minimum, Issue 1, if approved by voters, would massively expand late abortion in Ohio, with the potential to increase the number of injuries and even deaths of abortion-seeking women.
