{"id":300764,"date":"2023-10-28T13:28:52","date_gmt":"2023-10-28T18:28:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=300764"},"modified":"2023-10-27T13:46:31","modified_gmt":"2023-10-27T18:46:31","slug":"tennessee-sues-hhs-title-x-planned-parenthood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/tennessee-sues-hhs-title-x-planned-parenthood\/","title":{"rendered":"Tennessee sues HHS over Title X funding &#8216;illegally diverted to Planned Parenthood&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tennessee-abortion-clinic-eee0c7099838c1a902ccc59544ca0741\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> this week that the state has filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services&#8217;s (HHS) decision to withhold federal funding from the state over its abortion laws.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, HHS <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/biden-administration-tennessee-title-x-funding-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> that the state would not be eligible to receive millions in Title X grants because the state&#8217;s pro-life laws do not require physicians to refer patients for abortions that are illegal. Last month, it was revealed that the millions in funding originally earmarked for the state had been given to Planned Parenthood instead.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">AG Skrmetti filed a complaint this week against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for terminating Tennessee\u2019s Title X funding. Read more here: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/J43uQnmtqL\">https:\/\/t.co\/J43uQnmtqL<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/x0pDyToTGv\">pic.twitter.com\/x0pDyToTGv<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; TN Attorney General (@AGTennessee) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AGTennessee\/status\/1717207699945922952?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 25, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe are suing to stop the federal government from playing politics with the health of Tennessee women,\u201d Skrmetti said in a statement, noting that the HHS &#8220;illegally diverted [the] funds to Planned Parenthood.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur lawsuit is necessary to ensure that Tennessee can continue its 50-year track record of successfully providing these public health services to its neediest populations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the current <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/biden-administration-tennessee-title-x-funding-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Title X<\/a> rules as implemented by the Biden administration, family planning clinics in receipt of the funds must be willing to offer abortion referrals. When Tennessee officials informed the HHS that, due to state law, its facilities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/255820\/tennessee-sues-biden-admin-says-hhs-illegally-diverted-health-funds-to-planned-parenthood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">would only be<\/a>\u00a0\u201coffer[ing] counseling and referrals only for legal pregnancy terminations,\u201d HHS leaders clapped back with the news that the state would &#8220;strip all of Tennessee\u2019s Title X funding&#8221; due to its pro-life policies.<\/p>\n<p>In September, Planned Parenthood leaders celebrated the news that the government money would be sent to them instead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur governor jeopardized access to birth control, STI testing and treatment, and cancer screenings when he refused to comply with Title X requirements for unbiased patient information,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/hhs-titlex-funding-tennessee-planned-parenthood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Ashley Colfield, the president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Tennessee and Northern Mississippi. \u201cDirect grantees in Virginia and Mississippi will use these funds to ensure there are services in Tennessee and we look forward to working with Virginia League for Planned Parenthood as a subgrantee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the lawsuit, Skrmetti is asking a federal judge to reinstate the Title X money and to reiterate that the federal government cannot withhold funding based on a state&#8217;s abortion laws.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHHS\u2019 actions make clear that it has no intention of meaningfully considering Tennessee\u2019s appeal or preserving HHS and Tennessee\u2019s 50-year Title X partnership,\u201d the lawsuit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tn.gov\/content\/dam\/tn\/attorneygeneral\/documents\/pr\/2023\/title-x-complaint.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">states<\/a>. \u201cRather, HHS apparently values sending a pro-abortion message more than providing vital family planning services to thousands of vulnerable women and families across Tennessee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/stop-planned-parenthood\/?utm_campaign=sex_ed_petition&amp;utm_medium=LAN&amp;utm_source=website\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-295788\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Stop-PP-From-Sexualizing-Kids970x250-blur-700x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Stop-PP-From-Sexualizing-Kids970x250-blur-700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Stop-PP-From-Sexualizing-Kids970x250-blur-300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Stop-PP-From-Sexualizing-Kids970x250-blur-768x198.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Stop-PP-From-Sexualizing-Kids970x250-blur-500x129.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Stop-PP-From-Sexualizing-Kids970x250-blur.jpg 970w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti announced this week that the state has filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services&#8217;s (HHS) decision to withhold federal funding from the state over its abortion laws.
