In total, 44,958 people have died since MAiD was first implemented in 2016. MAiD is not officially listed as a cause of death; if it were, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AlexanderRaikin\/status\/1716993035865579614\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one exper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t says it would be the fifth-leading cause of death in the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It&#39;s official. MAID caused more than 4% of all deaths in Canada in 2022\u2014a total of 13,241 deaths. Alarmingly, 3.5% of the assisted deaths were people whose natural death was <em>not reasonably foreseeable \u2014 <\/em>meaning they were not terminally ill. Additionally, nearly 20% of those who died did not first receive palliative care, a form of specialized medical care that focuses on the patient\u2019s comfort and is often seen as an antidote to the idea of medically-assisted death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quebec <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/montreal.citynews.ca\/2023\/10\/25\/doctor-assisted-deaths-quebec-maid\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">led<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all provinces with the largest percentage increase, up 46% from 2021. Nearly 6.6% of all deaths in Quebec were due to MAiD; British Columbia closely followed with 5.5% of its population dying MAiD deaths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the significant rise, Federal Health Minister Mark Holland confirmed that the government will continue to support those who choose this form of death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMedical assistance in dying is a complex and deeply personal issue,\u201d Holland <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/health\/maid-growth-steady-as-number-of-practitioners-grows-before-expansion-next-year-report-1.6617757\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThe Government of Canada is committed to ensuring our laws reflect Canadians\u2019 needs, protect those who may be vulnerable and support their autonomy and freedom of choice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardus, a Canadian think tank, has expressed concern over the significant jump in numbers while highlighting that the country should be focusing on better palliative care, not making MAiD easier to access.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe nearly 31% year-over-year growth in death by euthanasia and assisted suicide is alarming.
