#WeCount \u2013 a project of the pro-abortion <\/span>Society of Family Planning<\/span><\/a> (SFP), which is <\/span>funded<\/span><\/a> by the <\/span>David and Lucile Packard Foundation<\/span><\/a> and the Buffett Foundation, both of whom have <\/span>invested<\/span><\/a> in abortion pill manufacturer Danco\u00a0 \u2013 recently released updated <\/span>data<\/span><\/a> which purports to compare the number of U.S. abortions before and after the Supreme Court\u2019s decision in <\/span>Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization<\/span><\/i>, which overturned <\/span>Roe v. Wade<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the organization\u2019s <\/span>previous report<\/span><\/a> showed an overall decline in the number of abortions committed post-<\/span>Dobbs<\/span><\/i>, its current report shows the opposite, claiming a cumulative increase of 2,200 abortions per month. This has been spun by <\/span>various<\/span><\/a> media<\/span><\/a> outlets<\/span><\/a> as evidence that pro-life laws are not effective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But is this conclusion supported by the evidence? Here are some reasons to eye this report with some skepticism:<\/span><\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> Limited accuracy and comprehensiveness<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It should be noted that there are limitations to the accuracy and comprehensiveness of the data presented. SFP <\/span>admits<\/span><\/a> that only 82% of the abortion facilities known to them provided data for this report. Data was imputed (estimated) for the remaining 18%. SFP further admits that it cannot account for so-called \u201cself-managed\u201d abortions, which it <\/span>defines<\/span><\/a> as \u201cany attempt to end a pregnancy outside the formal healthcare system, including using medications, herbs or something else, or obtaining pills from friends or online without clinical assistance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Unequal comparisons<\/strong><\/p>\n

As Charlotte Lozier Institute Research Associate Dr. Michael New has <\/span>noted<\/span><\/a>, SFP compared a year\u2019s worth of post-<\/span>Dobbs<\/span><\/i> data to a mere two months<\/strong>\u2019 worth of pre-<\/span>Dobbs<\/span><\/i> data. The pre-<\/span>Dobbs<\/span><\/i> data used represents \u201ca small number of datapoints,\u201d New told Live Action News. \u201cThe number of abortions performed in these months may not be representative of the number of abortions performed in other months before the <\/span>Dobbs<\/span><\/i> decision. I would have more confidence in their data if they compared a year\u2019s worth of post-<\/span>Dobbs<\/span><\/i> data to a year\u2019s worth of pre-<\/span>Dobbs<\/span><\/i> data,\u201d New concluded.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. New also <\/span>pointed out<\/span><\/a> that \u201cTexas and Oklahoma were already enforcing strong pro-life laws before <\/span>Dobbs<\/span><\/i>. That makes the abortion declines in these states after <\/span>Dobbs<\/span><\/i> appear less dramatic.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Dramatic decreases in pro-life states<\/strong><\/p>\n

The SFP report itself <\/span>asserts<\/span><\/a> that \u201cStates with abortion bans experienced the greatest reductions in numbers of abortions. In states with total abortion bans, cumulatively there have been 94,930 fewer clinician-provided abortions in the year since <\/span>Dobbs<\/span><\/i>,\u201d adding, \u201cThis change represents a decrease of 100% in the number of abortions, comparing pre-<\/span>Dobbs<\/span><\/i> 2022 and June 2023.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The report also notes that states with permissive abortion laws saw the greatest increases in the numbers of abortions committed within their borders during this timeframe.<\/span><\/p>\n

In other words, contrary to media hype, SFP\u2019s report shows that pro-life laws save lives<\/em>, while pro-abortion laws unsurprisingly lead to an increase in preborn deaths due to abortion. <\/span><\/p>\n

This finding is bolstered by comparisons of Texas\u2019 birth data prior to and subsequent to the implementation of that state\u2019s heartbeat act in 2021. Analyses of that data conducted by the <\/span>Charlotte Lozier Institute<\/span><\/a> and the <\/span>Journal of the American Medical Association<\/span><\/a> both showed an increase in Texas births to the tune of over 1,000 per month.<\/span><\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is impossible to know exactly how many abortions are being committed in the United States for many reasons, not the least of which are the activities of organizations like <\/span>Aid Access<\/span><\/a>, which operate outside of normal regulatory structures and which do not report the number of abortions they are responsible for to organizations like SFP. In addition, there are no federal laws<\/em> that require reporting of abortion statistics, and state laws vary. <\/span><\/p>\n

What we <\/span>can<\/span><\/i> safely conclude, however, is that pro-life laws accomplish what they are intended to effect \u2013 namely, a significant increase in the number of lives saved from abortion.<\/span><\/p>\n
