{"id":300562,"date":"2023-10-24T08:37:36","date_gmt":"2023-10-24T13:37:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=300562"},"modified":"2023-10-25T14:55:21","modified_gmt":"2023-10-25T19:55:21","slug":"ohio-governor-against-abortion-amendment-far","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ohio-governor-against-abortion-amendment-far\/","title":{"rendered":"Ohio governor speaks out against abortion amendment: &#8216;It just goes too far&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and his wife, Fran, have released an ad urging voters to vote \u201cNo\u201d on Issue 1, a ballot measure that would enshrine abortion as a \u201cright\u201d in the state\u2019s constitution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DeWine told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/ohio-constitutional-amendment-abortion-way-too-far-farther-roe-gov-dewine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News Digital<\/a> that though he has never run an ad about an issue before, he felt compelled to take a stand because he believes the proposed amendment \u201cjust goes way, way too far.\u201d He warned against some of the ramifications that could result if the amendment passes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GiuTEWve3gY?si=W49f-uGvwi9zvn3Q\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor many years, in Ohio and in this country, we\u2019ve had a law that said a partial-birth abortion \u2014 where the child is partially delivered and then killed and then finally delivered \u2014 was illegal in Ohio,\u201d the governor explained. \u201cThis constitutional amendment would override that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The warning that the amendment would repeal a ban on D&amp;X abortions, also known as partial-birth abortions, was mentioned last month in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/news\/2023\/10\/ohio-attorney-general-releases-legal-analysis-of-state-issue-1-the-abortion-rights-amendment.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">legal analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by state Attorney General Dave Yost. In his analysis, Yost noted prohibitions on D&amp;X abortions and second-trimester D&amp;E abortions <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cwould both be invalidated and these abortions would be permitted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protect Women Ohio, a coalition opposing the amendment, also raised the issue of a partial-birth abortion repeal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xamy6MhApQs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when it revealed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Martin Haskell, the <strong>inventor<\/strong> of the D&amp;X &#8220;partial-birth&#8221; abortion, gave a $100,000 donation in favor of the ballot measure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, DeWine noted that many fear the amendment\u2019s passage would repeal the current law requiring parental consent for a minor to receive an abortion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have a law that says that you have to have parental consent in regard to a minor getting an abortion that would be knocked out by this constitutional amendment as well. So it would put Ohio in a small category of the most permissive states in the union in regard to abortion. I just don\u2019t think it fits Ohio. It\u2019s not who we are.
