{"id":300531,"date":"2023-10-23T14:42:39","date_gmt":"2023-10-23T19:42:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=300531"},"modified":"2023-10-23T10:40:56","modified_gmt":"2023-10-23T15:40:56","slug":"maternity-care-suffering-rural-areas-not-laws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/maternity-care-suffering-rural-areas-not-laws\/","title":{"rendered":"Maternity care suffers in rural areas while media falsely blames pro-life laws\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two Alabama hospitals will be closing their maternity wards by the end of the month, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/womens-health\/3-hospitals-closing-maternity-labor-delivery-units-alabama-rcna111374\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NBC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The women in two counties will, like so many women living outside the most populous zip codes in the United States, be forced to drive 100 miles or more to deliver babies or receive maternity care. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the mainstream media is quick to push the abortion agenda by blaming pro-life laws, the actual reasons for maternal care deserts are complex, and coming up with real solutions will prove elusive so long as the media narrative ignores the truth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Lack of available maternity care is not caused by pro-life laws\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new standard media narrative has made these closings about pro-life laws. For example, in March of this year, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-idaho-hospital-labor-delivery-closure\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shuttering of a maternity ward in Idaho<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made headlines when a press release blamed its closing on the state\u2019s new pro-life laws. However the same statement gave many more reasons \u2013 many of which were actually measurable, such as low patient volume, and thus low demand. Yet media outlets peddled their preferred narrative, claiming an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/womens-health\/pregnant-women-struggle-find-care-idaho-abortion-ban-rcna117872#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unequivocally direct connection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between the closing and the state\u2019s pro-life laws, while practically ignoring other reasons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, given <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/doctor-most-obgyns-dont-do-abortions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how few OBGYN physicians commit abortions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there is little evidence that pro-life laws are causally related to maternity care deserts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fact is, the closure of maternity wards is not a problem only for states with pro-life laws. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marchofdimes.org\/maternity-care-deserts-report\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">March of Dimes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, these voids exist in <em>abortion-friendly<\/em> states \u2013 the problem isn\u2019t laws, but population density. Dr. Zsakeba Henderson of the March of Dimes pointed out the discrepancy between the number of obstetricians and where they choose to live and practice. \u201cThe number of obstetric providers (meaning obstetricians and certified midwives) in the U.S. actually increased \u2014 by 1.7% \u2014 between the 2020 and 2022 reports, Henderson says. But only about 7% of providers serve rural areas,\u201d reports <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/10\/12\/1128335563\/maternity-care-deserts-march-of-dimes-report\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NPR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One often-overlooked reason why rural areas are obstetrically underserved relates to the affordability of healthcare or health insurance. For instance, the March of Dimes report includes in its definition of \u201clow access\u201d to maternity care a metric regarding whether 10% or more of women in a county are without health insurance. Another reason is demographic shifts and the ensuing economic incentives. Shifts in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optum.com\/business\/insights\/population-health-management\/page.hub.mitigating-maternal-care-deserts.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">local populations\u2019 ages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also lead to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama-health-forum\/fullarticle\/2800629\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower birth volumes and thus lower demand<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, leaving the fewer number of women of childbearing age subject to the law of supply and demand affecting their access to maternity care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S-lQOooYAs8?si=i_wcuoox5bK9D4Ah\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>Maternity care suffers when abortion is incentivized<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the rising cost of healthcare and insurance, many in positions of power in the U.S. have recognized abortion as the \u201ccheaper\u201d option. CEOs have put in writing that banning abortion is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/corporate-misogyny-ceos-banning-abortion-bad-business\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bad for business,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and many companies have also scaled back on their maternity care benefits and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/companies-promise-funding-abortion-travel\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beefed up so-called \u201cabortion benefits.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Biden administration has launched a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/biden-abortion-law-sweep-midterms\/president-biden-and-vp-harris-attend-meeting-of-the-task-force-on-reproductive-healthcare-access\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whole-of-government initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to push abortion access and even forced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/department-defense-taxpayer-funds-abortion-travel-military\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taxpayers to pay for the abortion travel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of U.S. military members. In short, the current presidential administration and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/companies-increase-abortion-benefits-reduce-maternity-parental\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">billion-dollar companies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like Disney, Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu are seeking to make it far easier to obtain an abortion than to have a baby.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By incentivizing abortion, these major power players are creating a culture that avoids investing in solutions to maternal care deserts. The problem of maternal care deserts becomes part of a culture that disproportionately harms vulnerable populations like minorities and impoverished groups, who are already targeted by the abortion industry. Planned Parenthood\u2019s origins are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/washpo-dishonestly-downplay-abortion-eugenics-ties\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tied to the racist eugenics movement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that sought to target poor Black communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Live Action News has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-report-communities-color-impacted-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, recent Centers for Disease Control (CDC) data shows that minority women continue to represent a disproportionate share of the total abortions in the U.S.\u00a0 And according to the 2022 March of Dimes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marchofdimes.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-10\/2022_Maternity_Care_Report.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one in four indigenous babies (26%) and one in six black babies (16%) were born in maternal health care deserts, where risk of poor health outcomes and even death were higher than in the rest of the country. As Live Action News has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-better-access-maternity-care-not-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, women need maternity and prenatal care for the nearly 500,000 babies and roughly seven million American women of childbearing age \u2013 not abortion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Medical professionals are stressed<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why aren\u2019t there more OBGYN physicians in these maternal care deserts, most often in rural areas? According to NPR, the March of Dimes attributes the loss of obstetric providers and hospital services within rural counties to financial and logistical challenges, which were aggravated by the COVID pandemic. The medical profession as a whole suffered as a result of the pressures from every direction due to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10198658\/#:~:text=We%20found%20that%20internal%20medicine,(P%20value%20%3D%200.016).\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 pandemic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which have resulted in prominent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newjerseymonitor.com\/2023\/09\/01\/nurses-striking-for-safe-staffing-vow-to-keep-up-the-fight\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nursing strikes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and walk-outs due to unsafe staffing ratios and unfair compensation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Economic factors also make it difficult to recruit and keep OBGYNs in rural areas. OBGYNs are the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9319230\/#:~:text=Obstetrics%20and%20gynecology%20(ob%2Fgyn)%20remains%20one%20of%20the,claim%20during%20training%20%5B2%5D.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most-sued medical specialty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; 83% have been sued at least once in their careers. The amount of malpractice insurance necessary to have on hand takes a chunk out of the ability to pay off student loans. New OBGYNs are not incentivized to move to rural areas with lower compensation, and where Medicaid reimbursement rates \u2013 already very low \u2013 have not caught up to rising healthcare costs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yet still the media uses circular logic to push the pro-abortion narrative. An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/abortion-access-restrictions-affect-maternity-care-access-research\/story?id=101770115#:~:text=The%20analysis%20showed%20that%20around,no%20access%20to%20abortion%20services.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ABC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> report claims that \u201cpeople living in maternity care deserts without access to abortion may have to continue a dangerous pregnancy or one they don&#8217;t want, and may also struggle to find the care they need during that pregnancy and delivery.\u201d The article goes on to claim that \u201cabortion and maternity care aren&#8217;t unrelated [&#8230;] because it takes the same clinical skill set to provide abortion care as it does to respond to things like miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here the logic is both circular and not based in fact. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making abortion more widely available in maternal care deserts reduces demand, and therefore makes it less appealing for OBGYNs to move to these maternal care deserts. And the fact that most OBGYNs do not commit abortions belies the claim that somehow having abortion access will help provide better access to maternal care. Induced abortion <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-never-medically-health-care\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isn\u2019t health care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/prolifereplies.liveaction.org\/medically-necessary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not medically necessary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and no experience with abortion is required to give a physician the skills needed to address maternal care shortages, including in critical areas like miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies \u2013 both of which involve treatment, and not the direct and intentional killing of a preborn baby.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maternal care deserts are a serious issue that affect women and babies across the United States every day. But as much as abortion advocates want to believe it, these are not caused by pro-life principles and pro-life laws.
