{"id":299761,"date":"2023-10-06T14:38:32","date_gmt":"2023-10-06T19:38:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=299761"},"modified":"2023-10-09T22:43:43","modified_gmt":"2023-10-10T03:43:43","slug":"black-pastors-oppose-ohio-abortion-amendment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/black-pastors-oppose-ohio-abortion-amendment\/","title":{"rendered":"Black pastors oppose Ohio abortion amendment: &#8216;The Black community supports life&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over 100 Black pastors from Ohio have signed an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chooselifeohio.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Ohio-Faith-Leaders-Letter-Updated.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">open letter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> denouncing Issue One, the upcoming referendum vote that would enshrine abortion as a constitutional right.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vote, which is scheduled to take place on November 7, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Ohio_Issue_1,_Right_to_Make_Reproductive_Decisions_Including_Abortion_Initiative_(2023)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">establish a state constitutional right to \u2018make and carry out one\u2019s own reproductive decisions,\u2019 including decisions about abortion, contraception, fertility treatment, miscarriage care, and continuing pregnancy.\u201d If passed, it would allow abortion up to birth and nullify the state\u2019s current parental notification laws.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bipartisan group of signees drew attention to the racist reality of abortion, citing a recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/odh.ohio.gov\/wps\/wcm\/connect\/gov\/ae63c3e4-8564-4f39-b76c-045390612a47\/VS-AbortionReport2022.pdf?MOD=AJPERES&amp;CONVERT_TO=url&amp;CACHEID=ROOTWORKSPACE.Z18_K9I401S01H7F40QBNJU3SO1F56-ae63c3e4-8564-4f39-b76c-045390612a47-oHM8dKA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">state report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that revealed 48% of abortions in 2022 were committed on Black women, despite the fact that just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/data\/2023\/02\/how-has-ohios-black-population-progressed-in-the-last-50-years-black-history-month.html#:~:text=%E2%80%9CThere%20were%20a%20lot%20of,growing%20share%20of%20the%20state.\">14 percent<\/a> of the state\u2019s population is Black.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Black community has been the target of the abortion industry for decades, beginning with the deplorable ideology of racist eugenicist Margaret Sanger, whose Planned Parenthood organization purposefully established abortion mills in minority neighborhoods and targeted our communities for abortions. Sanger\u2019s mission was to kill Black babies before they entered the world, and Planned Parenthood and the for-profit abortion industry have allowed that mission to continue to this very day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This warning was echoed by Bishop Patrick L. Wooden in a recent Protect Women Ohio video ad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4AaxqD53xTI?si=sV26oUjFFfS5G9ur\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/center>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat is the No. 1 killer of us? It\u2019s not the police,\u201d Bishop Wooden said in the video. \u201cIt\u2019s abortion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The letter writers warned that the amendment &#8220;[I]s more extreme than Roe v. Wade, and it will allow for painful, late-term abortions through all nine months of pregnancy \u2013 even after an unborn baby can feel pain. It will permit our children to undergo abortions without parents knowing. And it will continue to rob generations of Black women and men of the insurmountable joy of parenthood.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Enough is enough,\u201d they continued. \u201cThe Black community supports life. We have a rich pro-life history, rooted in our love of family and in our abiding faith and belief that God is the ultimate author of every life.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;As Black faith and community leaders across Ohio who are called to care for God\u2019s people, we urge our fellow Christians, the Black community, and all Ohioans who believe in the inherent value of every person to vote NO on Issue 1 this November.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/stop-planned-parenthood\/?utm_campaign=sex_ed_petition&amp;utm_medium=LAN&amp;utm_source=website\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter
