{"id":299633,"date":"2023-10-04T17:41:33","date_gmt":"2023-10-04T22:41:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=299633"},"modified":"2023-10-04T17:52:15","modified_gmt":"2023-10-04T22:52:15","slug":"northern-ireland-law-restricting-pro-life-free-speech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/northern-ireland-law-restricting-pro-life-free-speech\/","title":{"rendered":"Northern Ireland law restricting pro-life free speech takes effect"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A buffer zone law restricting pro-life activity outside abortion facilities went into effect in Northern Ireland on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Passed last year, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abortion Services (Safe Access Zones) Act (Northern Ireland) makes it a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2023\/09\/30\/this-is-not-the-endgame-abortion-clinic-buffer-zones-comes-into-effect-in-northern-ireland\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">criminal offense<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to hold pro-life \u201cprotests\u201d within 100m to 150m from entrances or exits of abortion facilities. The law makes it illegal for anyone to be \u201cimpeded, recorded, influenced or to be caused harassment, alarm or distress\u201d as they enter or leave the facility. Violators face a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsletter.co.uk\/news\/politics\/northern-ireland-abortion-protest-buffer-zones-psni-will-not-arrest-clerics-who-preach-against-abortion-in-churches-inside-new-safe-access-zones-aroudn-abortion-clinics-4356752\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a3500.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The law does not pertain to private property, but it does apply to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/utv\/2023-09-29\/abortion-service-safe-access-zones-take-effect-in-ni\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">following<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> public health trusts:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Southern Trust &#8211; Craigavon Area Hospital\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Southern Trust &#8211; Daisy Hill Hospital\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belfast Trust &#8211; College Street\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belfast Trust &#8211; Bradbury Wellbeing and Treatment Centre\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northern Trust &#8211; Causeway Hospital\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Western Trust &#8211; Altnagelvin Hospital\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Eastern Trust &#8211; Lagan Valley Hospital\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Eastern Trust &#8211; Ulster Hospital\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buffer zone laws exist to limit pro-life activity, disallowing individuals from offering help or life-affirming options to women considering abortion. Though the pro-lifers are often vilified as violent or aggressive, the vast majority of them are peaceful and prayerful, and many sidewalk counselors <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/three-families-say-thank-pro-life-sidewalk-counselors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have been thanked<\/a> for the aid they\u2019ve given to abortion-minded women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zVk1qM1El9o?si=pr0N2rfyiKcwhHFp\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A spokesperson for Abolish Abortion NI, a pro-life organization, warned that because several churches fall within buffer zone areas, the new law could interfere with religious freedom. The spokesperson, who wished to remain unnamed, cited the situation in the United Kingdom, where arrests have been made for people <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/uk-man-criminal-charges-silent-prayer-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">silently praying<\/a> within abortion facility buffer zones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople are very concerned the legislation has been written in such an open-ended manner there is much debate as to the interpretation of the legislation. There is a real concern that this will impact civil and religious liberties more widely,\u201d the spokesperson told the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsletter.co.uk\/news\/politics\/northern-ireland-abortion-protest-buffer-zones-psni-will-not-arrest-pro-life-clerics-in-churches-inside-new-abortion-safe-access-zones-4356752\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">News Letter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response, the police have confirmed that since the law does not apply to private property, churches are exempt.
