{"id":299369,"date":"2023-09-28T06:40:16","date_gmt":"2023-09-28T11:40:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=299369"},"modified":"2023-09-26T17:07:15","modified_gmt":"2023-09-26T22:07:15","slug":"pro-abortion-ad-ohio-misrepresents-church-pregnant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-abortion-ad-ohio-misrepresents-church-pregnant\/","title":{"rendered":"Pro-abortion Ohio TV ad &#8216;dangerously misrepresents&#8217; how the Church helps pregnant women"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ohioans United for Reproductive Rights \u2013 a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ohioansunitedforreproductiverights.win\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coalition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of organizations including the ACLU of Ohio, Abortion Fund of Ohio, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio, and the abortion facility Preterm-Cleveland \u2013 recently produced a commercial urging voters to approve Issue 1, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-abortion-groups-2023-ballot-ohio\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ballot measure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which would amend Ohio\u2019s state constitution to include a so-called right to abortion. The 30-second <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/7uBiSi_vwtc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ad<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> features a montage of people doing various things, including a man praying in what appears to be a Catholic church.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The voiceover during the montage portion of the ad states: \u201cWhen we face personal medical decisions, we depend on our doctors, our faith, our family, and the last thing we want is the government making those decisions for us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7uBiSi_vwtc?si=8vT3JzKhEMVTh5k6\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/255408\/catholic-imagery-doesn-t-belong-in-pro-abortion-ohio-campaign-ad-critics-say\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Catholic News Agency (CNA), Michelle Duffey, associate director for communications and outreach at the Ohio Catholic Conference, said \u201cthe ad \u2018nearly tells the truth\u2019 in showing a man in prayer while narrating how people depend on faith when pregnant and dealing with uncertainty.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Duffey noted, \u201cThe ad describing Issue 1 dangerously misrepresents the proposed amendment and how the Catholic Church accompanies pregnant women in need\u2026 A woman can confidently rely on the Catholic Church to walk with her through pregnancy, support her material needs, and accompany her and her child after birth.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ad states that Issue 1 would end Ohio\u2019s \u201cextreme abortion ban,\u201d which is currently enjoined, and that it \u201cprotects birth control and emergency care for miscarriages,\u201d neither of which are illegal. It also claims the amendment \u201cprotects freedom.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brian Hickey, executive director of the Ohio Catholic Conference, was critical of the ad. \u201cOhio cannot accept a definition of freedom that perpetuates a throwaway culture of only cherishing people as long as they are useful,\u201d he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/255408\/catholic-imagery-doesn-t-belong-in-pro-abortion-ohio-campaign-ad-critics-say\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Catholic Church has always advocated for and acted to protect the most vulnerable in society, including the indigent, migrants, and preborn children in the womb,\u201d he continued, adding: \u201cOhioans deserve just laws that provide expansive resources and accompaniment to mothers and young families, not proposals like Issue 1, which does nothing to support women.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The constant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/sites\/default\/files\/flipbooks\/catechism\/550\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teaching<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Catholic Church since its inception has been that abortion is gravely wrong, and it penalizes those who participate in abortion with excommunication. The Catechism of the Catholic Church <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/sites\/default\/files\/flipbooks\/catechism\/550\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable.
