In a piece for <em>The Evening Standard<\/em>, the artist, most known for her work\u00a0<em>My Bed<\/em>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uk.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/opinion-tracey-emin-different-love-110902279.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recalls<\/a>\u00a0her abortion at the age of 26 that went \u201cterribly wrong\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Artist describes guilt and physical pain from abortion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not for the first time, Emin has spoken in graphic detail about ending the lives of her unborn twins. In a recent opinion piece, she shares \u201cI remember sitting in my boyfriend\u2019s garden \u2026 hoping to get browner and I guess subconsciously relieve myself from the mental and physical pain, trying to forgive myself. I felt racked with guilt\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>At 26, she had an abortion, but it did not go according to plan when the remains of one of the unborn twins were not removed from her uterus. The prize-winning artist explained that she felt ill after her abortion and kept on vomiting. She took a taxi to the hospital and\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/uk.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/opinion-tracey-emin-different-love-110902279.html#:~:text=by%20the%20time%20I%20arrived%20I%20could%20hardly%20stand%2C%20blood%20and%20flesh%20were%20tumbling%20from%20between%20my%20legs.%20I%20was%20delirious.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recalled<\/a>\u00a0\u201cby the time I arrived I could hardly stand, blood and flesh were tumbling from between my legs. I was delirious\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI could hear the baby screaming no\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a series of video interviews entitled\u00a0<em>How It Feels<\/em>, released in 1996, Emin shares about the experience of ending the lives of unborn babies by abortion.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/x968ot6kTBg?t=46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">She said<\/a>\u00a0\u201cEvery May the 1st I always think, oh, this is my anniversary, my abortion anniversary. And then in the autumn \u2026 I always think, oh,\u00a0 this is when I would have had a baby\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more successful my life becomes, those dates never change for me\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/x968ot6kTBg?si=h-wtywrX0lP87ZLm\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the 1996 video, 6 years after her abortion in 1990, she remembers the doctor asking her if she was sure she wanted to have an abortion. She said yes, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/x968ot6kTBg?t=171\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recounts that<\/a>\u00a0it felt like someone else was answering for her and that \u201cI could hear the baby inside me screaming no\u201d. She reflects that it was like the decision was made by someone outside of her.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the artist now feeling like she does not feel guilt about the abortion, she\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/x968ot6kTBg?t=250\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained that<\/a>, at the time, \u201cI gave up art, I gave up believing, I gave up faith. I had what I call an emotional suicide\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unborn babies remembered and grieved through art<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The memory of Emin\u2019s unborn children whose lives were ended by abortion comes up throughout the years in her artwork. Her 1997 work\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Everyone-I-Have-Ever-Slept-With-1963-1995\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963 \u2013 1995<\/em><\/a>, includes her two aborted children. Her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.xavierhufkens.com\/artworks\/tracey-emin-tracey-emins-cv-cunt-vernacular\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">autobiographical video<\/a>\u00a0of the same year also explores her abortions. In a 2011 exhibition, she displays textile work called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/suehubbard.com\/tracey-eminlove-is-what-you-wanthayward-gallery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The first time I was pregnant I started to crochet the baby a shawl, 1998-2004<\/em><\/a>, recognising the lives that were growing inside her.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/three-million-abortion-tiktok-truth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em> Three million people watched an abortion on TikTok, but they didn\u2019t see the truth<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Right To Life UK spokesperson, Catherine Robinson, said \u201cThese heartbreaking and poignant recollections point to the devastating reality of abortion.
