(Sarah Terzo – Substack<\/a>) In her 2015 book,\u00a0From Trauma to Triumph: My Journey after Abortion<\/a><\/em>\u00a0Noemi Morales describes her decades-long heartache after two abortions. Morales suffered for 25 years before she sought help.<\/p>\n

In her book, she says, \u201cWith abortion comes lifelong trauma, whether you realize it or not. Life may seem to go on, but it doesn\u2019t. You are among the living, but you cease to live.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Deliberate Choice to Get Pregnant<\/h3>\n

As a young woman, Morales became pregnant intentionally. The man she was dating, who would become the father of her first aborted baby, planned to leave her. She wanted to have a baby, so she slept with him.<\/p>\n

She says, \u201cI didn\u2019t think. I just couldn\u2019t think sensibly at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morales\u2019s older brother had children who her family was \u201ccrazy about,\u201d and her younger brother, who was just 15, had recently gotten his 14-year-old girlfriend pregnant. This influenced her decision.<\/p>\n

Morales did become pregnant. She says, \u201cMy desire to have a child had been realized. I would raise my child as a single mom with the help of my family; I would live happily ever after.\u201d<\/p>\n

She thought her parents would support her and the baby, and that her family would be happy for her.<\/p>\n

Pressured into an Abortion<\/h3>\n

However, it didn\u2019t work out that way. Her mother wasn\u2019t pleased.<\/p>\n

Morales says, \u201cI have never forgotten the expression on my mother\u2019s face or the first words that came out of her mouth, the words that hurt me so deeply, that have haunted me to this day.\u201d<\/p>\n

The words were, \u201cHave an abortion. You\u2019re not the first, and you won\u2019t be the last.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morales says, \u201cI hastily began thinking of every way possible to keep my baby, even without my family\u2019s help.\u201d<\/p>\n

But she gave in and agreed to have an abortion. She wanted to get it over with quickly, because \u201cthe longer I waited, the harder it would be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her mother made all the arrangements.<\/p>\n

Morales says she felt \u201cpressured, abandoned, and defeated.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Painful Emotional Aftermath<\/h3>\n

After the abortion, Morales says, she was \u201cnever the same again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morales describes what she went through:<\/p>\n

Feeling disgusted with the mess that I had created and with the fact that I had taken an innocent life, I began going crazy. I couldn\u2019t function mentally. I ended up having to move back to my parents\u2019 home, the home where I thought I would have raised my child\u2026 I really had nowhere to go; I had nothing\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

While I was very much alive, I had experienced physical death; the child that I had so desperately wanted was gone. The whole ugly scenario played on and on in my mind nonstop. I was alone with others around me, but totally alone\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

I dealt with it by being a recluse, not dealing with anything or anyone, and for close to a year, I truly lived in darkness.<\/em><\/p>\n

As traumatic as the abortion was, sadly, her experience with abortion wasn\u2019t over.<\/p>\n

A Man Comes into her Room in the Middle of the Night<\/h3>\n

After Morales moved out of her family\u2019s house, she had a male friend sleep over. In the middle of the night, he came into her room, wanting to have sex with her.<\/p>\n

Morales says, \u201cWhile I didn\u2019t want it to happen, I let it, I just laid there\u2026 as if I had no choice \u2026 but I did. I didn\u2019t want sex, but I felt the need to be wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morales didn\u2019t resist\u2014but it\u2019s uncertain what would\u2019ve happened if she had. The man was aggressive and may not have taken no for an answer. And he was much stronger than she was and very capable of hurting her. Like any woman, she would\u2019ve been aware of that.<\/p>\n

Morales eventually came to think of the incident as rape. It might not be considered that in a court of law \u2013 but there were clearly elements of coercion, and she felt violated.<\/p>\n

A Second Abortion and a Complication<\/h3>\n

Morales arranged a second abortion. After it, she developed symptoms of an infection. However, she didn\u2019t want to go to the hospital because she didn\u2019t want to \u201crelive\u201d the abortion. Instead, she tried to care for herself at home.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, she recovered from the infection.<\/p>\n

Her emotional wounds, however, were harder to heal. She felt she was \u201ctruly a failure\u201d for having not just one abortion, but two.<\/p>\n
