Jackson Women&#8217;s Health Organization <\/em>signaling the possible overturning of<em>\u00a0Roe v. Wade<\/em> led to an onslaught of violence and threats against pro-lifers and the Supreme Court justices. As the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) warned of potential threats to the justices, some of those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2023\/08\/31\/clarence-thomas-harlan-crow-travel-jets-disclosure\/70587800007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">justices<\/a> accepted private flights and made other decisions that are now painted as &#8220;unethical&#8221; by critics.<\/p>\n<p>Those critics say that Justice Clarence <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/clarence-thomas-really-just-blamed-193500954.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas<\/a> in particular is &#8216;blaming abortion&#8217; for his allegedly misguided travel decisions. Reports show, however, that the justices really did put their safety and lives on the line to overturn <em>Roe <\/em>and allow states to pass laws protecting preborn human beings. Whether or not all of their private travel arrangements were ethical is still being debated, but the fact is, the safety of the Supreme Court justices who overturned <em>Roe<\/em> was \u2014 and still could be \u2014 at risk.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Threats and violence begin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On May 18, 2022, 16 days after the draft opinion was leaked, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/05\/18\/politics\/supreme-court-threats-homeland-security\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN<\/a> reported that the DHS had warned of potential threats to the public and the Supreme Court in response to the leaked draft opinion. There were threats of burning down or storming the U.S. Supreme Court, said CNN, as well as threats of homicide against the justices and their clerks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_3CCBA9B6-B7C7-268D-9E4C-D794AEAD511D@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">In a memo, the DHS explained that \u201cdomestic violence extremists and criminal actors have adopted narratives surrounding abortion rights to encourage violence, likely increasing the threat to government, religious, and reproductive healthcare personnel and facilities and ideological opponents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_3CCBA9B6-B7C7-268D-9E4C-D794AEAD511D@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">It also noted, &#8220;Going forward, grievances related to restricting abortion access could fuel violence by pro-choice abortion-related violent extremists and other DVEs (domestic violent extremists).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_3CCBA9B6-B7C7-268D-9E4C-D794AEAD511D@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">In fact, on June 8, 2022, a man with a gun and a knife was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2022\/06\/08\/kavanaugh-threat-arrest-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">detained<\/a> by police near the home of Justice Brett Kavanaugh. The man, Nicholas John Roske, had made threats against Kavanaugh and was charged with attempted murder. Roske admitted he was &#8220;upset&#8221; by the leaked draft opinion in <em>Dobbs<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Many people wondered: would the justices backtrack, change their minds, and uphold <em>Roe<\/em> in light of the threats against them? (Photo by Tasos Katopodis\/Getty Images)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>The violence was only beginning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/clarence-thomas-really-just-blamed-193500954.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> from the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC), 135 attacks were perpetrated against pro-life groups between May 2022 and September 2022. By November of 2022, FBI Director Christopher Wray was testifying before the Senate Homeland Security Committee that about <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fbi-70-threats-violence-pro-lifers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">70%<\/a> of abortion-related violence and threats since the <em>Dobbs<\/em> decision had been carried out <em>against<\/em> pro-life groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bottom line is that after the Dobbs decision was leaked, there was over 22 times more violence directed against pro-life groups than pro-choice organizations,\u201d the CPRC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-pro-abortion-violent-attacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a>. \u201cHowever, if the media is less likely to cover violence [against] pro-life organizations, the 22 times estimate will underestimate the relative violence against these groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CatholicVote, a political advocacy organization, tracked the attacks and recorded at least <a href=\"https:\/\/catholicvote.org\/tracker-church-attacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">186 against churches<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/catholicvote.org\/pregnancy-center-attack-tracker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">88 against PRCs and other pro-life groups<\/a> since the leak. Pro-abortion group Jane&#8217;s Revenge, for example, threatened (emphasis added):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>To all the conservatives, Fox News anchors, judges, cops, Christian extremists, or federal agents reading this:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>This attack is nothing in comparison to what is in store for you. Some spray paint will be the least of your worries.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u2026 We will hunt you down and make your lives a living hell. You started this war but we will win it. So far its just been pregnancy crisis centers, but\u00a0<strong>tomorrow it might be your cars, your homes, or even your lives<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Supreme Court police had even noticed an increase in social media threats of violence, with more than two dozen being put under investigation. Protests took place outside the homes of several justices \u2014 actions the White House never condemned. (Photo by Anna Moneymaker\/Getty Images)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Protecting the justices<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grassley.senate.gov\/news\/news-releases\/grassley-portman-implore-doj-to-defend-supreme-court-justices-in-face-of-threats-violence-by-pro-abortion-extremists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> to Attorney General Merrick Garland and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, lawmakers called for stronger protections for the Supreme Court justices from groups such as Jane&#8217;s Revenge, which was calling for additional rioting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Over the past few weeks, in the wake of the unprecedented leak of a draft Supreme Court opinion, there has been a disturbing rise in threats against Supreme Court justices and the Court itself.
