When Brenda Bauer started dating her boyfriend, she was seeking to fill a void left by her mother\u2019s death. But she soon discovered when she became pregnant that the man with whom she had been living wasn\u2019t really interested in pursuing a serious relationship.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bauer told Live Action News, \u201cI didn\u2019t have strong ties with my dad, so at the time, I was looking for love in all the wrong places. Because my mother never talked about sex and was very overprotective, I was such a na\u00efve young woman.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

As Bauer would soon find out, her mother had been keeping secrets throughout her life, one of which was that Bauer\u2019s father was illiterate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom was good at sweeping things under the rug,\u201d Bauer said. \u201cWhen she became stricken with cancer, she didn\u2019t talk about it. While I was an only child and as such, was close to my mother, there was never any authentic communication between us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

At the time of her unplanned pregnancy, Bauer\u2019s father was drinking to numb the pain of loss and she had moved to live with a former neighbor, having learned her boyfriend had an unsavory background. Lonely and conflicted, she didn\u2019t know in whom to confide and decided to talk with her father.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bauer said, \u201cMy father immediately told me I had to \u2018get rid\u2019 of it. He stressed that [neither of us] could handle raising a child; the timing wasn\u2019t right. I had no idea where to go and I couldn\u2019t depend on my father who clearly couldn\u2019t help me figure it out, so I was on my own.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

At the women\u2019s clinic, she recalls the staff being kind and compassionate, telling her that the abortion procedure would be easy \u2014 as simple as removing a \u201cblob of tissue\u201d from her womb. Afterward, she went on birth control to prevent another pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI never again wanted to have another abortion,\u201d Bauer said. \u201cI did, though, take friends to get abortions. It was quite the paradox.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
