{"id":295769,"date":"2023-08-03T16:41:05","date_gmt":"2023-08-03T21:41:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=295769"},"modified":"2023-08-04T14:44:46","modified_gmt":"2023-08-04T19:44:46","slug":"professional-sports-teams-benefits-athlete-moms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/professional-sports-teams-benefits-athlete-moms\/","title":{"rendered":"More professional sports teams are increasing benefits for athlete moms"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. women\u2019s soccer team is currently competing in the World Cup, and several mothers of young children are on the roster. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of them is 31-year-old Julie Ertz, who gave birth to son Madden last August before making the third World Cup appearance of her career. She told the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/31\/sports\/soccer\/womens-world-cup-mothers-ertz.html?smtyp=cur&amp;smid=fb-nytimes&amp;fbclid=IwAR27Yl-20IVYoEn3oEKtig5YKYjqu-ZKfWSX3ch8wrcJe3Hf9JnrpCUVWiU\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> New York Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> she\u2019d initially been unsure whether she would return to soccer after having a baby, saying, \u201cI didn\u2019t know if I\u2019d be back. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I just didn\u2019t know if that was going to be logistically possible. I don\u2019t think any athlete wants to ever hang up their boots. But, you know, you become a mom and your whole life changes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Ertz, Casey Krueger is another National Women\u2019s Soccer League player who gave birth for the first time in 2022. Krueger had her son via emergency Cesarean section in July, just one month before Ertz. But while she, too, trained intensely to regain her pre-pregnancy fitness, during her time off other players moved up through the ranks and she didn\u2019t make it on the national team. She told the Times, \u201cIt was a risk I was willing to take. But as soon as you see [your child\u2019s] precious face, you realize that they\u2019re worth anything.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mom-athletes \u201csacrifice a lot to do what what we do\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All the moms interviewed for the Times story understand the challenges inherent in integrating their family and professional lives. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifa.com\/fifaplus\/en\/watch\/3a5zSNLT50SFIFWbfBecow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cheyna Mathews<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Jamaican women\u2019s national soccer team is mom to \u201cthree beautiful boys.\u201d She called motherhood \u201cthe most fun experience I\u2019ve ever had. I wouldn\u2019t trade it for the world.\u201d But she freely admitted the difficulty of being away from her husband and children for extended periods of time. Her oldest son asked her, \u201cWhy are you always gone so long? That\u2019s too many days.\u201d Through tears, she acknowledged, \u201cWe [moms who are professional athletes] sacrifice a lot to do what we do.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She added, \u201cYour kids don\u2019t hear complaints. They don\u2019t know what that is. You could be sick, disappointed, sad, or tired. They\u2019re gonna want the same energy from you every single time, and I think that carries over on to the pitch for me.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, women\u2019s professional sports teams in the U.S. are finally, gradually shifting to alleviate some part of the weighty pressure mom-athletes feel. According to the Times article, U.S. women\u2019s soccer benefits now include nanny coverage along with \u201cdaily travel stipends and paid transportation for children and their caregivers.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was likely part of the reason a record five mothers plus their children participated in the national team\u2019s April training camp.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. drives maternity coverage shifts in professional women\u2019s sports internationally<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But while some U.S. female professional sports teams have gradually shifted their benefits packages and other policies to be more child- and family-friendly, culture in other countries has been slower to change. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Times, as recently as 2021 pro soccer player Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir of Iceland had to fight to secure paid maternity leave from the French team she played for at the time.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soccer\u2019s international governing body, FIFA, currently requires that female players receive 14 weeks of job-protected maternity leave at two-thirds pay, comparable to the short-term disability coverage many white-collar American companies offer their employees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sarai Bareman, FIFA\u2019s head of women\u2019s soccer, weighed in on the gains in maternity coverage and benefits that led eight mom-athletes to bring their kids to the World Cup this year. She commented, \u201cI think it\u2019s very much driven by North America, because we\u2019ve seen some very high-profile returning mothers. I honestly feel that has influenced a lot of other female players around the world to be more publicly open about the fact that, yes, they\u2019ve got kids, too. Their kids are there. That\u2019s a massive, massive part of their life.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An opportunity gap persists for mom-athletes in the minor leagues<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, female professional athletes recognize that many other mothers in the minor leagues will never make it to the national level because they don\u2019t receive the support and resources they need to succeed as mothers and competitors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jessica McDonald, mom to Jeremiah, played on the World Cup-winning U.S. women\u2019s team in 2019. She observed, \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of talented women out there who have thrown away their talent to be moms because they didn\u2019t have support from [minor league] coaches or enough pay. And if that didn\u2019t happen, I firmly believe that there would be more moms on the national team right now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mom-athletes keep the big picture in mind<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just as there\u2019s no one-size-fits-all approach to motherhood, playing at the elite level while mothering young children doesn\u2019t necessarily appeal to or make sense for every mom-athlete. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professional golfer Amy Olson recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pregnant-golfer-us-open-bigger-golf\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">competed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the U.S. Women\u2019s Open while 31 weeks pregnant. Olson, who did not advance past the second round, grasped the reality of pregnancy\u2019s impact on her body, her swing, etc., and the likelihood that she\u2019d be able to put in a winning performance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She reflected, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I know what it takes to play at the elite level and play in a major championship,\u201d she said. \u201cRealistically, my ball-striking is not there right now. Do I think I can post a good score? Yes. But to say I can be competitive, that\u2019s probably a stretch. With the weight gain, I don\u2019t think this is going to be anybody\u2019s formula for success.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Olson refused to lose sight of the bigger picture. She noted, \u201cThere is a narrative in our culture that women can do everything, and I think that puts a lot of pressure on women to be good at everything all at the same time. There are different seasons in life, and you have to embrace each season, be grateful and joyful in each of those seasons.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That same desire to embrace a different season in life has prompted some female athletes, like tennis star <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/tennis-superstar-serena-williams-retirement-family\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serena Williams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to retire in order to focus on raising a family.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all professional women\u2019s sports team policies are truly pro-motherhood<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some U.S. pro women\u2019s sports teams are taking a different approach, incentivizing players who prioritize their team\u2019s \u201cneeds\u201d now by offering the promise, or hope, of childbearing later. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Live Action News <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-womens-sports-teams-pay-ivf-egg\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previously reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the WNBA\u2019s most recent collective bargaining agreement required subsidies for adoption, surrogacy, egg freezing, in vitro fertilization (IVF), and other assisted reproductive technologies that benefit the teams\u2019 financial bottom lines by encouraging players to delay (or outsource altogether) pregnancy and the maternity leave that inevitably follows.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such policies are a natural consequence of a culture that accepts and even promotes abortion as a necessary tool for women\u2019s empowerment and understands childbearing to be just one lifestyle choice among many. After all, bearing and raising humans is certainly more costly than \u201cfur baby parenting\u201d or \u201cplant parenting.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If all forms of parenting truly are equal, why not encourage women to indefinitely postpone or even outsource this physically, emotionally, and financially expensive type?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What fertility says about female athletes\u2019 health<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This same culture lacks an understanding that regular ovulation, on which the ability to get pregnant relies, is actually a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/family-planning-launches-fertility\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fifth vital sign <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of overall health in the female body. The process of ovulation <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/topic\/fertility-awareness-methods\/reasons-women-need-periods\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> women\u2019s bone, breast, brain, heart, and immune health. The menstrual cycle is especially important for athletes in particular, since amenorrhea, or lack of menstruation, is a telltale sign of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3435916\/#:~:text=The%20female%20athlete%20triad%20(the%20triad)%20refers%20to%20a%20constellation,bone%20mineral%20density%20(BMD)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">female athlete triad<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that indicates high vulnerability to injury, heart and immune system problems, and even infertility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Respect for the woman\u2019s natural body, including its limited biological window of fertility, leads to the type of policies put in place by the U.S. Women\u2019s National Team.
