But in reality, <em>w<\/em><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omen can conceive babies. Women can breastfeed. Men can do neither. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These weren\u2019t controversial statements at any point in history, yet they\u2019re presently considered up for debate, or even deemed hateful or harmful to individuals suffering from gender dysphoria. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the last year, reputable medical organizations that once prided themselves on presenting evidence-based medicine have adopted language aimed at inclusivity but which is unmoored from basic biology and objective reality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latest example is \u201cchestfeeding\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/07\/06\/mothers-swing-cdc-equating-male-nipple-secretions-breast-milk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guidance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> issued by the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC). The guidance could theoretically apply to biological women who have had their breasts removed or significantly reduced, which makes lactation very difficult, or to individuals who believe themselves to be neither male nor female. But it\u2019s most applicable to biological men who identify as transgender women and want to breastfeed (or \u201cchestfeed\u201d) the children they\u2019ve adopted or who were carried by their female partners or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/khloe-kardashian-surrogacy-transactional\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">surrogates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDC has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-12262959\/CDC-advice-says-trans-women-safely-breastfeed-babies-doesnt-mention-health-risks.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">castigated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for irresponsibly ignoring likely health risks to infants, particularly from powerful medications taken by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheParasiteGuy\/status\/1676617960939462656?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1676617960939462656%7Ctwgr%5E0c04c6428b5e475cce67698d24e8cd109341683b%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtontimes.com%2Fnews%2F2023%2Fjul%2F7%2Fcdc-accused-ignoring-science-chestfeeding-advice-t%2F\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biological males seeking to feed them<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/cdc-advises-trans-parents-on-chestfeeding-their-babies.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Critics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> insist that artificially-induced \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2023\/jul\/7\/cdc-accused-ignoring-science-chestfeeding-advice-t\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nipple discharge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d cannot come close to providing the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/breastmilk-is-living-substance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> true breastmilk confers on babies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDC\u2019s new guidance is found on two web pages<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDC\u2019s website contains two references to transgender individuals attempting to breastfeed.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first is on its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nutrition\/emergencies-infant-feeding\/health-equity.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Equity Considerations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> webpage, which reads:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transgender and nonbinary-gendered individuals may give birth and breastfeed or feed at the chest (chestfeed). The gender identity or expression of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/lgbthealth\/transgender.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transgender<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> individuals is different from their sex at birth. The gender identity of nonbinary-gendered individuals does not fit neatly into either man or woman.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An individual does not need to have given birth to breastfeed or chestfeed.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some families may have other preferred terminology for how they feed their babies, such as nursing, chestfeeding, or bodyfeeding.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And according to the CDC\u2019s<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/breastfeeding\/breastfeeding-special-circumstances\/maternal-or-infant-illnesses\/breast-surgery.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breastfeeding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> webpage, the answer to the question, \u201cCan transgender parents who have had chest surgery breastfeed or chestfeed their infants?\u201d is yes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome transgender parents who have had breast\/top surgery may wish to breastfeed, or chestfeed (a term used by some transgender and non-binary parents), their infants,\u201d the guidance reads, pointing out that such parents may require assistance with \u201cMaximizing milk production, Supplementing with pasteurized donor human milk or formula, Medication to induce lactation or avoiding medications that inhibit lactation, Suppressing lactation (for those choosing not to breastfeed or chestfeed).\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pregnancy-resource-centers-care-people-womb-tomb\/\">Pregnancy centers are just one way pro-lifers care for people from womb to tomb<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where did the CDC\u2019s recommendations come from?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The primary scientific source material for the CDC\u2019s new guidance appears to be a 2020 document from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/pdfplus\/10.1089\/bfm.2020.29152.rlf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which relied on exactly <strong>one <\/strong><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1089\/trgh.2017.0044?fbclid=IwAR3ZQqrx_z-eDx1a4mX-_RBPs1KHJDcf8YlE3GLPkypvl6j1GeE8FtNVmEY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">case report<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plus <strong>anecdotal<\/strong> evidence to make recommendations about inducing lactation in biological males. Keep in mind that a case report reflects the experience of one, <em>just one<\/em>, patient. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In any other area of medicine, basing recommendations for a whole portion of the population on just one person\u2019s experience would be unthinkable, the height of medical irresponsibility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ABM statement reads in part, \u201cThere is one case report and many anecdotal reports of trans women inducing lactation (see Induced Lactation and Colactation section) and producing human milk.\u201d The guideline notes, \u201cIn addition, there is no published research on the frequency of success [in inducing lactation in biological men].\u201d Furthermore, the statement reads \u201cThere exists no standard guidance on inducing lactation for any patient population.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why might inducing lactation in men be harmful to infants?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men do not naturally lactate, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outside of extraordinarily rare instances such as a pituitary tumor or starvation or as a side effect of certain drugs like the heart medication digoxin that might <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">possibly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stimulate lactation, as described in this 2007 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/strange-but-true-males-can-lactate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientific American<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article. As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.babycenter.com\/baby\/breastfeeding\/can-men-breastfeed_8824\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this article<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explains, there are two primary reasons for this: males have inadequate prolactin levels and inadequate development of mammary (breast) tissue during puberty.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/07\/06\/mothers-swing-cdc-equating-male-nipple-secretions-breast-milk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men who desire to breastfeed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have to take powerful medicines daily for months to induce lactation, and those medicines may harm the babies who consume their milk. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One such medicine is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK501101\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spironolactone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is normally prescribed for heart and blood pressure problems. In men with gender dysphoria, it&#8217;s given off-label because it blocks male sex receptors, which leads to feminized appearance. Spironolactone has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements\/spironolactone-oral-route\/description\/drg-20071534\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long list <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of potential side effects for adult users, some of which can be serious. Its effects on breastfed infants have been studied almost not at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another medicine mentioned in the case report ABM referenced is anti-nausea medication <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/investigational-new-drug-ind-application\/how-request-domperidone-expanded-access-use#:~:text=Background%20and%20Important%20Safety%20Information.%20On%20June%207%2C,containing%20domperidone%2C%20and%20refuse%20admission%20into%20the%20US.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">domperidone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Because it also increases prolactin, the hormone responsible for breast milk production, domperidone has sometimes been used off-label to induce lactation in women, as for adoptive mothers who seek to breastfeed or mothers who stopped breastfeeding and want to restart.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK501371\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Domperidone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not FDA-approved <em>for any reason<\/em> in the U.S., according to the National Institute of Health\u2019s (NIH) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK501371\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lactmed database<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which analyzes medication safety during breastfeeding. Domperidone was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/investigational-new-drug-ind-application\/how-request-domperidone-expanded-access-use#:~:text=Background%20and%20Important%20Safety%20Information.%20On%20June%207%2C,containing%20domperidone%2C%20and%20refuse%20admission%20into%20the%20US.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taken off the market<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in the U.S. in 2004 specifically because \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[t]he serious risks associated with domperidone include cardiac arrhythmias, cardiac arrest, and sudden death.\u201d In 2004, the FDA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/information-drug-class\/fda-talk-paper-fda-warns-against-women-using-unapproved-drug-domperidone-increase-milk-production\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cBecause of the possibility of serious adverse effects, FDA recommends that breastfeeding women not use domperidone to increase milk production.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just how much domperidone might cross over into breastmilk?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one knows. A 2021 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jcem\/article\/106\/5\/e2047\/6123860?login=false\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">case report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cited in the Lactmed entry for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK501371\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">domperidone<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">involved a biological male taking domperidone off and on for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nine months<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Two other case reports cited in the Lactmed entry, including the one mentioned in the ABM statement, similarly reflected multiple months of domperidone ingestion. As purported proof that domperidone wouldn\u2019t meaningfully impact breastfed infants, Lactmed cited a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2492930\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2008 research study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a very small sample size, which found miniscule concentrations of domperidone in the breast milk of mothers who took it due to insufficient milk supply. But those mothers\u2019 milk was tested after taking the medication for just a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">few weeks<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/07\/06\/mothers-swing-cdc-equating-male-nipple-secretions-breast-milk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Signal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article pointed out the hypocrisy of the CDC\u2019s cavalier attitude towards parental ingestion of medications which are certain to end up in any breast milk they produce, even as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanpregnancy.org\/healthy-pregnancy\/is-it-safe\/deli-meats\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnant mothers are told to avoid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> eating deli meats, soft cheeses, and other uncooked foods that could possibly contain listeria, which can in very rare cases be harmful or even fatal to a baby in utero. The article quoted a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/suzylebo\/status\/1677048344500137986?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1677048344500137986%7Ctwgr%5E57988c7b1884acf174cffe51e46b3ff578194301%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailysignal.com%2F2023%2F07%2F06%2Fmothers-swing-cdc-equating-male-nipple-secretions-breast-milk%2F\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twitter user<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who questioned, \u201cSo don\u2019t eat sushi or lettuce or deli meat, but men can take a boatload of meds and make an infant drink their toxic chest discharge?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">So don\u2019t eat sushi or lettuce or deli meat, but men can take a boat load of meds and make an infant drink their toxic chest discharge? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QwC8GxinRv\">https:\/\/t.co\/QwC8GxinRv<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Suzy Shofar (@suzylebo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/suzylebo\/status\/1677048344500137986?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 6, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does male breast milk compare to female breast milk?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The short answer to this question is that we don\u2019t know. The Lactmed entry for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK501371\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">domperidone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> references the same case report from the ABM document, plus two others of biological men who produced breast milk. While the ABM-cited case report and one other did <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> analyze the breast milk for nutritional quality, the third Lactmed-cited case report did. According to the report, which is behind a paywall and was written by a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclahealth.org\/providers\/amy-weimer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California doctor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who co-founded UCLA\u2019s Gender Health program, monthly tests of the macronutrient (fats, carbs, protein) content of breast milk from one biological man with induced lactation were similar to a biological woman\u2019s. (Of note, that individual was only ever able to produce very small quantities of breastmilk, which dwindled to a teaspoon per day after six months.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mothers\u2019 naturally-produced breast milk has incredible benefits for babies<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even the ABM <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/pdfplus\/10.1089\/bfm.2020.29152.rlf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">admitted that a woman who gives birth to a baby is best suited to make breast milk specific to that baby\u2019s unique nutritional needs: \u201cWhen possible, consider prioritization of colostrum feeding with the gestational parent, given the individuality of colostrum for the neonate.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.senate.gov\/about\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sen Roger Marshall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Kansas, a retired OB\/GYN with 25 years of experience, stated in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/sen-marshall-slams-cdcs-advice-encouraging-biological-men-to-chestfeed-infants\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">press release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colostrum is Mother Nature\u2019s nutrient dense, real mother\u2019s milk loaded with antibodies and antioxidants that gives a moms\u2019 protection to the vulnerable newborn.\u201d Marshall opined, \u201c&#8230; the liquid produced by biological males will not provide all the nutrition or calories healthy, growing newborn babies need.\u201d He continued, \u201cA biological male filled with hormones and a concoction of other drugs that have not been studied that could harm a baby should NEVER be encouraged.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even beyond that early colostrum, a mother\u2019s breast milk retains near-superpower qualities, so much so that it\u2019s considered a living substance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/breastmilk-is-living-substance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Natural Womanhood explains, a mother\u2019s breast milk is \u201cquite literally always changing, in response to all sorts of different factors. Practically, it also means that the milk a mom makes at 2pm on a Tuesday is constitutionally different from the milk she might make 24 hours, 2 weeks, or 6 months later.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fascinatingly, \u201cthe breastmilk a mom makes when her child is sick has more infection-fighting cells than when her child is well. And these changes and adaptations in breastmilk composition continue <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kellymom.com\/ages\/older-infant\/ebf-benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for as long as the mother breastfeeds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDC\u2019s latest guidance on \u201cchestfeeding\u201d is in keeping with a mistaken general societal belief that adults have a \u2018fundamental right\u2019 to have children, without regard to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/critics-bill-reproductive-technologies-right-harmful\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how those children are conceived<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, what\u2019s done with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/three-problems-in-vitro-fertilization-children\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">excess<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from assisted reproductive technologies used to conceive them, or the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/reproductive-technologies-human-rights\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effects on those children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> down the road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sadly, the discussion over transgender-identifying individuals&#8217; ability to chestfeed also fails to take into account the wellbeing of children. Children deserve better than to be treated as pawns or props to meet the desires of the adults who conceive or otherwise raise them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chestfeeding.
