{"id":294767,"date":"2023-07-14T18:39:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-14T23:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=294767"},"modified":"2023-07-17T13:29:15","modified_gmt":"2023-07-17T18:29:15","slug":"house-passes-defense-bill-abortion-travel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/house-passes-defense-bill-abortion-travel\/","title":{"rendered":"House passes defense bill with amendment about abortion travel"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The House of Representatives narrowly approved its annual defense authorization package with an amendment blocking the Pentagon\u2019s post-<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dobbs <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">policy of reimbursing servicemembers for costs associated with traveling for abortions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/07\/14\/politics\/house-ndaa-vote-amendments\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that amendment passed Thursday evening along with one eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and staff. Both amendments passed with slim margins. The abortion amendment received a mostly party line vote of 221-213, USA Today <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2023\/07\/14\/house-vote-passes-defense-bill-wokeism\/70407836007\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The abortion measure will likely face opposition as it must get the signature of a president whose administration implemented the controversial reimbursements. Meanwhile, the Democrat-controlled Senate will reportedly vote on its own version of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Feb. 16, the Defense Department issued its policy providing 21 days of paid leave for individuals and dependents of those who receive non-covered abortions. \u201cCovered abortions\u201d are those the military funds and include situations where the life of the mother is considered to be in danger or involving a pregnancy that resulted from rape or incest (The Hyde Amendment prevents taxpayer funding for other abortions). The military\u2019s policy also opened the possibility of travel and transportation allowances while clarifying that \u201c[t]he non-covered reproductive health care is at the Service member\u2019s expense.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Hi-Kc5HLHP8\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s unclear how many abortions would result but the Rand Corporation said one of its surveys indicated \u201cas many as 4,100 active-duty U.S. service women seek abortion care each year.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Live Action News previously <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/veterans-letter-block-military-abortion-policy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the issue has prompted controversy in the Senate where Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) has been blocking Defense nominees in response to the Pentagon\u2019s policy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In May, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) released a letter in which former defense secretaries criticized Tuberville\u2019s decision to halt confirmations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin similarly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2023\/05\/09\/secdef-austin-tuberville-unprecedented-hold-on-pentagon-nominees-creates-perilous-precedent\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sent a letter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on May 5 to Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), whom he said had requested information on the impact of Tuberville\u2019s actions. He warned that Tuberville was setting a \u201cperilous precedent\u201d and noted that the stalled confirmations were for positions that \u201coversee more than 1.2 million active and reserve component Service members and provide Service personnel and resources to the commanders of the unified combatant commands.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/senator-threatens-block-defense-confirmations-abortions\/\">Senator threatens to block Defense confirmations if Pentagon subsidizes more abortions<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tuberville has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/3974030-gop-senators-grow-weary-of-tuberville-abortion-stalemate-on-defense-nominees\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reportedly said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that he\u2019s willing to release the nominees if the Senate allows a floor vote on a measure that would prohibit the military from assisting with servicemembers\u2019 abortions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tuberville <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/veterans-letter-block-military-abortion-policy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found support<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, in a letter from hundreds of veterans and an organization representing more than 2,500 military chaplains. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is no truth more profound than the fact that all human life is sacred,\u201d reads the letter published by the Daily Signal in May.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It continues:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mission of the United States Military is to defend and protect all American lives \u2013 not subsidize the practice of destroying innocent and vulnerable American children via abortion with taxpayer dollars.
