One especially disturbing detail: it will not have any age restrictions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocatesforyouth.org\/campaigns\/free-the-pill-youth-council\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Free the Pill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 a coalition organization with members including the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/selling-sex-schools-population-control-eugenics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pro-eugenics<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/selling-sex-schools-whos-behind-ed-children\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advocates for Youth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the pro-abortion <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/selling-sex-schools-whos-behind-ed-children\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibis Reproductive Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 lauded the decision in multiple social media <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/freethepill\/status\/1679503064791941120?s=20&amp;link_id=5&amp;can_id=9867ee2b74e28b8e9465278bd43efbec&amp;source=email-victory-thanks-to-you-and-decades-of-activism-the-fda-has-been-advised-to-bring-birth-control-pills-over-the-counter-for-all-ages&amp;email_referrer=email_1989168&amp;email_subject=_we-won-birth-control-pills-approved-for-all-ages-thanks-to-you-and-decades-of-activism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">posts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The group particularly praised the decision to allow sales without age restrictions, stating on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/freethepill\/status\/1679503064791941120?s=20&amp;link_id=5&amp;can_id=9867ee2b74e28b8e9465278bd43efbec&amp;source=email-victory-thanks-to-you-and-decades-of-activism-the-fda-has-been-advised-to-bring-birth-control-pills-over-the-counter-for-all-ages&amp;email_referrer=email_1989168&amp;email_subject=_we-won-birth-control-pills-approved-for-all-ages-thanks-to-you-and-decades-of-activism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twitter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cYoung folks are the experts of their own lives and decisions like these puts [sic] healthcare access in the hands of people who need it most.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dyvia Huitron, a member of Advocates for Youth (which is financially backed by Planned Parenthood), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2023\/07\/13\/birth-control-pill-over-the-counter-fda-approval\/?link_id=1&amp;can_id=b68d76902617e2688d17d46aefa6665a&amp;source=email-victory-thanks-to-you-and-decades-of-activism-the-fda-has-been-advised-to-bring-birth-control-pills-over-the-counter-for-all-ages&amp;email_referrer=email_1989168&amp;email_subject=_we-won-birth-control-pills-approved-for-all-ages-thanks-to-you-and-decades-of-activism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Washington Post, \u201cYoung people absolutely need this. For them to be able to get something so important in terms of taking care of their bodies, at an age when historically we have not been allowed to \u2026 it will have a really significant impact on our lives and our ability to plan for the future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/biden-executive-order-over-counter-contraceptives\/\">New Biden executive order expands access to over-the-counter contraceptives<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Live Action News previously <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-considers-first-counter-birth-control-pill\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, progestin-only oral contraceptives, also called \u201cmini-pills,\u201d are not without health risks: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research suggests that women who take progestin-only birth control are at increased risk of developing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29211679\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breast cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26808155\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cervical cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and brain cancer, and a 2015 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4386952\/#:~:text=WHAT%20THIS%20STUDY%20ADDS,term%20users%20of%20hormonal%20contraceptives.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that glioma risk nearly tripled for women taking progestin-only birth control when compared to women who had never taken hormonal contraception.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, although ectopic pregnancy only occurs in 2-5% of pregnancies generally, a whopping 10% of women who conceived while using progestin-only contraception experienced ectopic pregnancies, according to one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK539860\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects of progestin-only oral contraception <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2017\/017031s035s036lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> headaches, dizziness, nausea, increased appetite, abdominal pain, cramps and bloating, fatigue, painful periods, nervousness, backache, breast discomfort, and acne. The risk for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapsychiatry\/fullarticle\/2552796\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also increased, especially for younger women and girls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/sites\/default\/files\/about\/general-counsel\/rulemaking\/upload\/2022.comments.OPILL%20usccb.ncbc_.cma_.cn_.Final_.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> opposing over-the-counter status for Opill released in November of 2022, the National Catholic Bioethics Center, along with the Catholic Medical Association, the National Association of Catholic Nurses, and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops wrote, \u201cWe strenuously oppose the non-prescription availability of OPILL because such access \u2026 violates\u201d the Hippocratic imperative to do no harm. \u201cAny patient having access to a medication that has the documented and potentially life-threatening side effects that can be present with OPILL, at a minimum, should be medically evaluated for contraindications to the drug,\u201d the statement added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-the-counter Opill is expected to be available in stores beginning in January or February of 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Thursday, July 13, FDA regulators announced the approval of the progestin-only oral contraceptive known as Opill for over-the-counter sale.
